L 22 19-PERISCOPE-32 SPEECH ACTIVITIES Eugene Carriger represented Churubusco high school in the Indiana Bar Asso- ciation contest at 'Columbia 'City and won second place for our school. The County Oratoricai Contest was held at South Whitley on April 6 this year and Betty Hershey, who represented our school, placed second, winning the silver medal. Norbert Drake represented our school in the County Indiana University Dis- cussion contest, on March 24, at Columbia City, and placed first in the contest, win- ning the privilege to represent Whitley county in the distlict crzntest at Auburn on April S. Central high school of Fort Wayne won first and represented our district at the state contest on April 22 at Bloomington. at MUSIC AND ART Band The school band. which has been directed by Mr. Huber for the past two years. organized at the first of the year for the purpose of putting it on a business basis with the students reslonsible for their shale in making the band prove more success- ful. Donald Smith was elected president. with Eugene Carriger vice president, Betty Hershey secretary and treasurer and Mary Evelyn Hall librarian. Last fail and during the summer the band furnished music for several Thursday night concerts. During the year the band put fight into our basket ball team by play- ing peppy music to inspire our boys at all cur home games. The band also took D311 in a mass band which was sponsored by the News-Sentinel last fall and gave a con- cert at the South Side stadium in Fort Wayne cn September 27. The band also enter. ed the District Band 'Contest at the North Side Auditorium on April 16. The members of the band were: Mary Evelyn Hall, Inabelle Veazey. Kathleen Carriger, Grace Richey, Kenneth White, Evelyn Hershey, Margaret McMichael, Bruce Benward. Maly Nestel, Dcnald Smith, Mefritt Miller, Kenneth Green, Archie Dominy, 'Clayton Raypole, Charles Hendrickson, Eugene Carriger, Betty Hershey, Carl Rober- son, Aibert Killworth, Paul Raypole. Fred Zumbrum. Donald Heinigex, Harry Zum- brum. Everett Leitch, Violet Laurie, Hoiie Rees, Franklin Strong, Jack Heiniger, Hugh Cotton. Victor Barcus. Orchestra The orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Sawyer, also has completed a veil' successful year. They played at the Operetta, for entertainment between acts and also furnished the music for the Senior class play. The orchestra also -played at the Baccalaureate services and for the Commencement exelcises, and accommodated the business men by furnishing music for the Victory Banquet which was held in honor of the State Debate Champs on April 13. The members of the orchestra this year were: Mary Evelyn Hall, Kathleen Cars riger. Grace Richey, Kenneth White, Evelyn Heshey, Margaret McMichael, clarinetsl Evelyn Richey, Alice Longenecker, Naomi Gordon, violins: Eugene Cariiger and Bet- ty Hershey. saxaphonesg Harry Zumbrum and Everett Leitch, baritones: Fred Zum- brum, trombone: Mary Nestel, Donald Smith. ccxonets: Vfolet Laurie and hitpe Rees, basses: and Beverly Davidson, piano. Glee Clubs The Glee Clubs this year have furnished music for the churches at various occa- sions. before the assembly on the Wednesday morning programs and for the Bacca- laureate and Commencement services. The boys Glee Club also sang at the ViCi0l'Y Banquet and at the I. U. Discussion Contest at South Whitley. The members of the Glee Clubs also carried parts in the operetta, Bitter-Sweet Anne, February 3rd and 4th, at the opera house. The members of the Glee 'Clubs were: Girls, Ida Barcus.
