Middlebrook Avenue Staunton, Virginia Class History In the fall of 1952 we, the graduating class of 1956, started our first year of high school with an enrollment of thirty-five students. Our sponsors were Mr. Louis Elia and Mrs. Kathleen Williar. Soon after the first of the year one of our members dropped out. Right before Christmas we were saddened bv the death of Ralph Hamil¬ ton, Jr., another classmate. We elected as our class officers: President, Allen Lambert; Vice-President, Betty Bussard; Secretary, Audrey McLain; Treasurer, Joe Taliaferro. Audrey Mc¬ Lain and Allen Lambert were our representatives in S.C.A. We selected as our colors red and white, our flower the red rose. Our motto was Look for the good in people and not for the bad. We entered our Sophomore year under the sponsorship of Mrs. Kathleen Arm¬ strong. In the latter part of the year Mrs. Armstrong left us and Mr. Leslie N. Preddy took over. Our Sophomore class officers were: President, Joe Taliaferro; Vice-President, Marcia Horn; Secretary, Audrey McLain; and Treasurer, Betty Bussard. Carolyn Hodge and Joe Taliaferro represented us in the S.C.A. The highlight of the year was the Sophomore picnic held at Shenandoah Acres with a large crowd attending. We had Shirley Vaught and Betty Bussard from our group as cheerleaders. Marcia Horn and Shirley Vaught represented the FHA Club at the convention at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. In the year 1954, we began our Junior year at Churchville High School with 24 members. Mrs. Doris Smith was our homeroom advisor. To serve as our officers that year we elected the following: President, Sandra Hull; Vice-President, Jackie Botkin; Secretary, Shirley Vaught; Treasurer, Beverley Shiplett; and Reporter, Frankie Houff. The members from our class who served as officers on the S.C.A. Council were: Secretary, Sandra Hull; Treasurer, Marcia Horn; and Sergeant-at- Arms, Charles Viel. Carolyn Hodge and Joe Taliaferro were representatives on the S.C.A. Joe Taliaferro and Marcia Horn from our class were representatives to the S.C.A. State Convention. Our Junior play entitled Monkey Business , written by Felicia Metcalfe, was given in the spring of 1955. The cast included Jackie Botkin, Clinton Shilling, Lacy Shifflett, Frankie Houff, Beverley Shiplett, Joan Gregory, Marcia Horn, Shirley Vaught, Carolyn Hodge, Mary Gilmer, Sandra Hull, Charles Viel and Carolyn Jordan. Our director was Mrs. Doris Smith. Shirley Vaught and Carolyn Hodge were on the cheerleading squad during bas¬ ketball season that year. Continued on next page. Main Street Harrisonburg, Virginia Class History (Continued) We were well represented in the Forensic Meet held at Middle River School. Frankie Houff entered public speaking, Sandra Hull was on the debate team, Charles Viel read prose, and Shirley Vaught read poetry. For a Junior-Senior entertainment we gave the seniors a barbecue supper at the high school. The faculty selected Shirley Vaught and Frankie Houff to represent the school at Girl and Boy State which was held at V.P.I., Blacksburg, Virginia. Sandra Hull and Carolyn Hodge attended the F.H.A. Convention held that summer at Madison College, Harrisonburg, Virginia. This ended another year of high school with only one more to go. Our fourth and final year, 1955-56, finally arrived. We had as our sponsor. Miss Mary Pitsenbarger. To serve us in this last year we elected the following: President, Shirley Vaught, Vice-President, Charles Viel; Secretary, Sandra Hull; and Treasurer, Pete Lovegrove. Early that year we decided to use Henpecked Henry as our senior play. Miss Pitsenbarger agreed to be our director. Under her splendid direction the following cast put on a very good performance: Joe Taliaferro, Marcia Horn, Shirley Vaught, Pete Lovegrove, Carolyn Hodge, Clinton Shilling, Mary Gilmer, Carolyn Jordan, Beverley Shiplett, Francis Lockridge, and Joan Gregory. Our S.C.A. representatives were Marcia Horn and Charles Viel with Joe Talia¬ ferro as President and Shirley Vaught as Vice-President from our class. We had a very successful season for basketball with both teams going to the District N tournament. The following seniors were on the teams: Marcia Horn, Joan Fitzgerald, Pete Lovegrove, Charles Viel, Jackie Botkin, Francis Lockridge and Clinton Shilling. Three senior girls were cheerleaders: Shirley Vaught, Sandra Hull, and Carolyn Hodge. Shirley Vaught and Charles Viel were selected by the high school students and faculty to receive the Rotary Award for citizenship. Sandra Hull and Joe Taliaferro were selected to receive the Danforth Award which is also based on citizenship. At the Forensic Meet which was held at Craigsville, Marcia Horn entered Girls ' Public Speaking; Shirley Vaught, Girls ' Poetry; Sandra Hull, Girls ' Prose; Charles Viel, Boys ' Prose and Carolyn Hodge, Spelling. Carolyn won at Craigsville and went to Charlottesville for the State Meet where she got a superior rating. At the end of the fifth six-weeks Sandra Hull was awarded the honor of valedic¬ torian on having the highest grades and Marcia Horn was salutatorian. And then came the highlight of the year, the week-end of May 11-13, when we went to Washington, D.C., for a week-end of fun and interesting tours. We, the Senior class of 1956, are looking forward to receiving our diplomas in June and stepping forward to take our places in the world.
