K K - Board of Education Serving as a member on the Board of Education is one of the most im- portant positions that a citizen can hold in the community. With the cooperation and support of the community, the Board can make steady progress in the advancement of education. The members of the Board serve without pay and attend the twelve regular meetings, plus the many special ones. The Board members have to have a knowledge of technical work. Being able to make decisions in the light of what the people want and the students need is essential in the workings of the Board. Plans for two new schools are under way. An elementary school at Chestnut Ridge and Chili Avenue, with room for ten classes and room to expand, is hoped to be completed by September 1, 1959. A senior high school at Buffalo Road, south of the Fairbanks Road Elementary School, with capacity for four htuidred pupils and room for expansion, up to one thousand, will be ready by January, 1960. Time schedules, of course, will depend on weather, labor strikes, and availability of materials. All possible will be done to avoid double sessions in 1959 - 60. is if ' il Wm X5 , MR. C. E. We, the Class of 1959, nearing the completion of our journey across the waves of high school, have selected the sea as our theme. As the crest of a wave is a breaking point, so this, our senior year is the breaking point between highschool and our future life. We set out on our voyage through high school under the able guidance of Commanders Kirby, Flint, and Mallory, filled with excitement and a little fear. To set our sail over the waves we elected John Nunes, Presidentg Tom Snyder, Vice-Presidentg and Carol Bes- wick, Secretary-Treasurer. Our first money was stowed in the treasury through baked food sales. Mr Beusman, J. Nunes, Presidentg B. En- sign, Secretary, C. Beswick, Treasurerg S Gallery, Vice-Presidentg Mrs. G. Snyder, Mrs. D. Snyder. Continuing our voyage under the navigation of Captains Sprague, Moore, and Davis, we looked back over our journey with determination and courage to brave our many coming responsibilities. We again elected John Nunes, President, and Tom Snyder, Vice-President, to direct our ship, along with Sally Gallery, Secretary and Sarah Hub- bell, Treasurer. Our crew sponsored baked food sales and several dances, including the Spring Frolic and Soph- omore Swing. All too soon the second knot of our journey was over. As we continued to sail across the waves we selected, to keep us on course, John Nunes, Presidentg Carol Bes- wick, Vice-Presidentg Adelaide Ratigan, Secretaryg and Tom Snyder, Treasurer. Our class rings were flown to our ship just in time for Christmas and we excitedly cruised about, proudly showing them to each passer-by. Dances were a popular pastime on shipboard, with Junior Roundup as one of the themes. Our one big project went over with a bang and Care for some taffy? was the cry! Under the expert command ofMrs. Button we pre- sented the hilarious play, M r. Co-ed, which was a tremendous success. This third knot of our journey was one of hard work under the able guidance ofCommodores Flint, Snyder, and Sprague. As we reach the crest of our journey across the sea we are filled with mixed emotions of joy and sadness for having to leave our shipmates and alma mater. Admirals Beusman and Snyders, D. andG., were always on deck to guide us. Leading us across our last nautical mile were: John Nunes, Presidentg Sally Gallery, Vice-President: Barbara Ensign, Secretaryg and Carol Beswick, Treasurer. This year was a busy one with record hops, the Junior- Senior Prom, our magazine campaign, and our senior play, a comedy entitled Calling A1lCarrs. Our senior trip to Washington, for which our treasury has been expanding since the day we entered senior high, was a wonder- ful experience and a great success. We now find ourselves at the crest of our wave, graduation, from which our courses fan out across the sea of Life. So with our acquired knowledge, we will soon be heading from port to brave the sea of opportunity which lies before us. 14 ARADINE, CAROLYN Honor is her standard, perfection her goal. After fifty d i s a s tr o us years the Class of 1959 is reunited aboard Captain Fred Drury's ship, The Weary Bone Titanic. Flash! A report has just been received by Dick Bater, announcer for the Knickerbocker Knot Knitty Station, that a hurricane has started. John Hoff, an atomic chemist, brought forth the hurricane by mixing some wrong chemicals. ln the engine room we see Nancy Marion, Mary Morgan, and Beverly Gruendike at the controls, for they are the top three electrical technicians in the world. ln the lounge Linda Eckert is heard telling Marge Hart and Karen Wheeler that she has just won the wer-1d'3 record for filibuster in the Senate, From the crow's nest Sarah Hubbell, Mrs. Cheerleader, shouts that the hurricane is approaching. Meanwhile, Barb Ensign, Carole Trusler, and Jim F eiock are using their X-ray vision to scrutinize the ship and make sure that everything is tied down to withstand the storm. Dressed in shorts and blouse, Laura Lee Morgan Commands Bill Crandall, Joe Beaman, and Duane Knab, who are picking up loose articles on the deck, to go below. Too late! Hurrican Molly, named after lively Molly Waldron, now a famous comic-strip writer, has just struck and pulled them and some others over-board. Mr. Beusman and the Mrs. Snyders CD. and GJ come to the rescue, crying, All hands on deck! Linda DeWick, Barb Smith, and Cy Fink, now All-American swi.mming champions, leap into the icy water and rescue them. Dona Berle, now a Navy nurse, and Sue Traver administer medical aid to Gareth Brown and Ronnie Bennett, and Dr. Charles Lyon supervises. The smell ofa pizza, prepared by Chief Chef John Nunes, floats into the hospital room and all the patients are revived. Marge Smith finally arrives on the scene to get material for her newspaper, The Reformed Rtunor. Trailing along beside her is Lucille Pascarell, with her handy typewriter, efficiently taking notes. Crash, she just ran into Pat Tosh, owner of the Fanny Farmer Company. Observers of this accident were: Sally Gallery, dressed in diamonds and mink, now the wife of a millionaireg Diana Beaman, a professional Hollywood model, Theodore Taylor, sponsor of The Sixty-Four Thousand Dollar Question Boxg Betty Beal, now a missionary in a foreign land, and Joyce Huff, the artistic designer of The Weary Bone Ti- tanic.', Wow! screamed Rocket Rath, a retired jet pilot, as he spotted Frances Barkley and Larry Sutton waltzing across the deck. They were just crowned king and queen of the ship and are gleefully dancing to tunes played by Chuck Matzell's Moon Makers. Striking up the band, we see Barb DelF ave playing the accordian, Bob Little strtusnming the guitar, and Wes Parry blowing the sax. From the recreation room across the way we hear Carol Beswick yelling, Exercise is the only cure for sore bones. She has finally attained the high position of instructor for the Dizzy Devildame Trotters, which stars Gary Miller, Harold Worden, Tom Snyder, Jim Mitchell and George Traver. We, the staff of The 1959 Crest, are proud to present to the Senior Class of 1959 and to the Churchville Chili student body, this year's edition of the yearbook. Behind this book is the work of many people without whose help and cooperation this task would not have been possible. To them we wish to extend our sincere thanks. To our advisers, Miss Karnischky and Mrs. Kramer, we owe our deep gratitude. Without them, we would have floundered in the sea of yearbook production. We wish to thank the Art Staff and, especially, its editor, Joyce Huff, for the fine work they have done, both on the cover and within. For a fine job in the photography department, we owe the Photography Staff and its editor, Bob Little, our sincere thanks. To Dona Berle and the Literary Staff we also mustexpress our gratitude for the long hours they spent completing the literary work contained in this book. We are most grateful to the Typing Staff and its editor, Elaine Bound, for a wonderful job in the nerve-wracking position of typing all the literary material and names in this book. Thanks also to sport's editor Harold Worden and the Sports Staff for their work on that section of the book. Last, but not least, our thanks to Dick Bater and his Publicity and Advertisement Staff for their fine work in securing the support of local merchants, and in selling The Crest. And now, as we complete The 1959 Crest, we send our best wishes to the editors, staff, and advisers of 1960 for a successful year. Sincerely yours, Carolyn Aradine Fred Drury Editors, 1959 Crest 77 Finis There were times we thought we wou1dn't! There were times we thought we cou1dn't!
