CONNORS To Mrs. Connors for her years as librarian at Churchville-Chili Central High School and her help and guidance in planning the year- book, The Crest , we the Senior Class of 1956 wish to express our deepest appreciation. This is a small token indeed, for all that she has done for us. With books she taught us the value of words and know- ledge. Without fear we can look to her for guidance and understanding as a teacher, a librarian and friend. To you Mrs. Connors with in- creasing gratitude we say, Thank You. 3 Sw!! We decided upon this theme because of the great advancements which have been made recently in the field of photography. The uses of photography are very unique and can illustrate many purposes. 'O .7 As long as man has inhabited the earth he has known light. It was the presence of light which enabled him to see the things around him, By light, man could enjoy the beauty of his home. Through the centuries man has tried to capture these light pictures and preserve them. Great artists took up brushes and with paint tried tocreatean exact and lasting image. The things of nature are so involved that this was impossible to do. Later, as man noticed that his exact reflexion was caught by water and reflected back he wanted to use this idea in the reproduction of a lasting image. It was in the 17th Century when the English scientist Thomas Wedgewood made photographic copies of paintings on glass by exposing paper, coated with silver chloride, to light under the glass paintings. The pictures did not endure and the early scientists decided that a fixation was needed to preserve the outline of the image. An English inventor, William Henry Fox Talbot used a strong solution of ordinary tablesalt for this purpose. For many years almost all photo- graphic attention was directed upon film and the photographic image. The camera of early days was nothing more than the pinhole camera which children have made for many years. The modern camera consists mainly of a box, a lens, and a device for holding plates and film. The simplest form of the modern camera is the box camera, although today the average photographer uses the folding camera because of its compactability and its variable lens. Many cameras are equipped to use a flash attachment, which enables pictures to be taken in total darkness. The studio or professional camera enables the photographer to vary the distance between lens and Elm. This type of camera was used in creating this yearbook. The individual pictures of the rtembers of the Senior Class were made possible because of this device which enables the distance between lens and film to be varied. This device makes possible photographs which in the photographic business are called close-ups , We have used photographs to demonstrate our ' activities and to express the ideas of a group or of groups. In your many years to come, may weall look back to this yearbook 1 and see these pictures. When memory is misled by many years these pictures will recall our high schooldays and our many happy memories. .l xy X-.1 :T 6 f f af f 9' This year is very important in Churchville-Chili history since it saw the opening of our new Elemen- tary School on Fairbanks Road. Due to a carpenter strike it was not available at the beginning of school and for a number of weeks the elementary pupils were inflicted with the curtailed session. However, everyone agrees that the new school was worth waiting for. The new school has twenty-four classrooms with a large playroom and an auditoria. 'Phe kitchen in the new school has a place for central cooking for the other schools of the district. In addition, aside from the health suite and the library, there is a very fine set of offices. Twenty-one of the twenty-four rooms were occupied as soon as they became available by about six hundred and thirty pupils. Unfortunately the High School building at Churchville is becoming so crowded that it will be necessary to use some of the Fairbanks Road School for the seventh grade next year, .Y n ,KAKK g Q X X.. .-X Wes., 8 L .'73c.w1.d af LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. A. Our Board of Education continues to be busy with plans to provide education for Churchville-Chili Central Schoo1's expanding population. The carpenters' strike during the summer of 1955 upset plans for entering the new school on Fairbanks Road and necessitated the installation of curtailed sessions for grades one through six during the first part of the year. However, even before the new school was finished the Board was moving ahead on plans to increase our High School facilities which are definitely overcrowded. The CREST staff salutes the members of the Board for their unselfish and unfailing efforts to give us the best school possible in our community. 9 H P H9 MWPHWW Mr. C. E. Qktbzg has gawk fwf , -az. A' snuff' Wwzfwzff WGMYAVWWWMXW VW With the beginning of each school year a new Freshman Class is formed. Each class enters the almost sacred shrine of learning, high school, shyly and quivering with excitement. Our class is no dif- ferent than any Freshman Class except that we -were greeted by our able advisors, Mr. Flint and Mr. Hickox. We elected Paul Swanton as president, William Woityra as Vice-President, and Ralph Thieleman as Secretary-Treasurer. In our Freshman year we sponsored the movie, Fast Company. On the second step up the ladder we looked back on our Freshman year with laughter, determined that we would not make the same mistakes. Our Sophomore Class advisors were Miss Welch and Mrs. Knapp. Our officers were Steven Snyder, President, Paul Swanton, Vice-Presidentg Roberta Goerner, Secretary, and Alan Austin, Treasurer. We gained in recognition as a class when some of our members showed skill in sports. We had a smashing success with the movie, The Dude Goes West. We entered our Junior year with great anticipation. Miss Welch and Mrs. Friedman were always at hand to guide us, as our advisors. Later in the year, when Mrs. Friedman left us, Mr. Bernardo became our new advisor. Jeanette Armison, Carol De Witt, Roberta Goerner, and Burton Sage were elected Pres- ident, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Among our events were those delicious Baked Food Sales, Movies, and a Sadie Hawkins Dance. The biggest event of the Junior year is the arrival of the class rings. When our rings arrived in February they looked far more beautiful than when we picked them out and we were very pleased. We then awaited the time for our J unior-Senior Prom. The theme we chose was Paradise Prom. As Seniors we are filled with mixed emotions, the happiness of being Seniors and sadness of having to leave school and all of our friends. With Mr. Griffiths as class advisor we had a successful year, Our officers were John Hendrickson as President, Paul Swanton as Vice-President, Roberta Goerner as Sec- retary, and Burton Sage as Treasurer. Among our many activities were Baked Food Sales, Dances, and a Variety Show. Among the dances were the annual Sno-Ball and the J unior-Senior Ball. In November we presented the hilarious Senior Play entitled, Wi1Jie's Weekend, Under the expert direction of Mr. Bernardo, the play was a tremendous success. To climax all of these activities was the Senior Trip to Washington. This beautiful, five day drive to the nations capitol during the month of April is an unforgetable and certainly educational experience. ' Now as we stand in caps and gowns, ready to face the world alone each Senior is sincere in admitting that the most important years of his or her life were spent in Churchville-Chili High School. The choruses, under the able leadership of Miss Thayer began the year by teaching the participating members the Alma Mater, which we sing at all assemblies and home basketball games. Hard work was very evident at the Christmas program when such selections as O Holy Night, Jesu Bambino, and Ha11eujah Chorus were presented. The Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra under the capable hands of Mr, Halligan played at such school activities as assemblies, concerts, and basketball games. ' 3 LEFT TO RIGHT: I. Anderson, S. Even though we had a very good season the team suffered a serious setback when B111 Woityra broke his leg. We are looking forward to an even better season next year. 69 ' ' .93 H1 OW.. ,f 2 2 1 if , 'Mme . LJ- ,I 16 f XI Bi11 ' , 215515: , ,f -V f ,. H 4' ,. We have tried our utmost to make this the best yearbook in Churchville-Chili's history, Much of the credit must be given to Mrs. Connors whose untiring aid and advice had made it possible to present this book to you, Under the editorship of Lorraine Embling, the Advertising Staff helped put the yearbook on a sound financial basis. We also would like to thank the Art Staff under the leadership of Judy Van Gelder for their fine work in the art department. Many thanks go to Deanna Varley and her Literary Staff for their hard work in compiling and writing the information needed to make this such aninteresting book. The Typing Staff under the editorship of Nancy Miller deserves a vote of thanks for the long hours at the typewriters. Also our appreciation goes to Miss Welch of the Com- mercial Department for helping to type the long lists of names. Mary Lou Hoff and her Photography Staff deserve much credit for helping to produce such fine pictures. The sports front has been fully covered by the roving eyes of John Hendrickson and his staff. Last, but not least, comes the Publicity Staff under Florence Kingsbury whose job it was not to produce, but to sell the book. Again, we must say Thanks to everyone who contributed to the yearbook. Much of the hard work that was put into this book will be realized in years to come from the memories it will bring back. Also best of luck to the editors of the 1957 Crest, QQ, ec E, Jeanette Armison Steve Snyder Editors 90 ffm ffm Uv' , V .. , ba - .K 'n 'iw '. w , , sh'-: .-.'.':2'2:m 1'.11.141,.,L1'-Fa.-mm:,. . -Jmurh.-m mkf:,F'uu.'m1: .'MwvJ'1Jmk1nml1lBv 1 1 1 G 9 1 1 F s 5 W it 3 21 1?
