illlll I i way flif Many of you have been wondering just what my trip to Germany this summer accomplished. It was not a tour of Europe nor what we call a vacation, It was in a sense, but it also was part of a program sponsored by the American Field Service International Scholarships. The goal of the A. F. S. is a better tuiderstanding between people and nations. The A. F. S. believes that better understanding by people can be reached through the ex- change by nations of teen-age students. The foreign teen-age students are brought here to America to live with an American family for a year and attend High School. This is possible because many foreign students major in English at their school and can overcome the language barriers. The American teen-agers in most cases have a language barrier and can only be ex- changed during the summer period. It was the latter part of this program that I took part in. Many of you have asked me if I had a nice time while in Germany. I think I can honestly say that I had a marvelous time. It is something I will remember and treasure for the rest of my life. I only wish that more teen-agers could have the opportunity that I had. I feel I have seen and learned more about foreign peoples and their way of life in two short months than I could possibly have learned from books. You may think this strange but it is something which you have to experience to realize. I brought home with me a better appreciation of the feelings and lives of the people in Europe as well as the teen-agers from different parts of our own country who were also a part of this summer program. It also made me more appreciative of the freedoms and the conven- iences of living in America. I believe it has proved to me that freedom and opportunities as exist here can be found nowhere else in the world. I only hope that I did in my small way this summer, bring about a better understanding of Americans by the people I met in Europe particularly the teen-agers. Without your generosity my trip this summer could not have been made. Therefore I wish to express my sincere gratitude to everyone for making it possible. gy! A ,aff 'f Q.-af
