REPORT ON THE NEW SCHOOL The past year has seen the beginning of our new 24-room elementary school on the Fairbanks Road site. On July 28th, the final contracts were let to the lowest bidder establishing the total cost of the site, building, equipment, and fees at S9'76,96l. The money was raised by sale of bonds amortizing over a 30 year period at an interest rate of 2.407o, The total bond issue ofS998,000,000 included 320,000 for the purchase of an additional site on Route 33A in Chili, which will be used for future expansion. The construction contract calls for completion of the Fairbanks Road building by September Of 1955. Under present plans the new building will house all of the children in grades one through six. The Kindergarten will be housed in the present North Chili building and grades seven through twelve will continue at the high school building in Churchville. Aside from the M classrooms, included in the new building there will also be a playroom, auditeria fauditorium-cafeteriab, library, and various storage rooms. Present plans are to equip the kitchen sufficiently to handle the cooking for all of the schools in the district. Berle, a member of the Board of Education since 1926 truly deserves the acknowledge- ment of his wonderful work. In 1926 when he first became a board member there were five men on the Board, a school principal and sixteen teachers. The Board met once a month and their most difficult task was appointing one teacher out of fifteen to sixteen applicants. Mr. Berle was President of the Board in 1938, the year our high school was dedicated. The Board's problems were concentrated mostly on the new Churchville High School. One of the changes was that there no longer was a surplus of teachers. Time moved very quickly and soon there was a great need for another school. After a long, but successful struggle, the project passed, thus making it possible for the building of our new elementary school. So to you, Mr. Berle, we think everyone should join with us and together thank you for a job well done in your many years on the Board of Education. 8 Z' ,,., X ' an ,..M-www. 71' 'f ii STANDING: Mr. Olmsted, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Cramer, Mr. Maier, Mr. Vail. SEATED: Mr. Beaman, Mr. Egbert, Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. Way, Mr. Hoff. This past year has seen the beginning of the actual construction of the new 24 room elementary school on the Fairbanks road site. This has meant a great deal of extra work for the Board, but at the same time the members have taken a great deal of pleasure in seeing the definite result of their planning finally take shape. The new building is promised for September occupancy. Church- ville-Chili District finds itself in the same situation as most of the districts in New York State that lie within commuting dis- tance of a large city, New houses continue to be built in our area which provide homes for the new children who continue to increase our enrollment each year. It begins to appear that the new building on Fairbanks Road is only the first step in solving the school space problem of the district. However, so long as con- scientious, responsible citizens will consent to serve on the Board of Education, we feel confident that our American way will continue to provide us with satisfactory schools. 9 ff ff!! ff' 5 yz44y,?y W Off tv 231 QQ ,f H ,. .0 ' mf 151.152, . 43,2 , xv f 'f MR. To start the ball rolling, under the excellent supervision of Mr. Flint and Mr. Hickox, the class elected Ann Schur, President: Edith Hill, Vice-Presidentg andlarnes Quincey as Secretary-Treas- llrer. As time moved on we had a dance and a movie which we considered very successful When the time came for us to be Sophomores, we felt as if the time was flying away with usp but that only spurred on our ambitions. With Mrs. Kirby and Mr. Kreiser as capable ad- visors, we elected Katherine Hoelhn, President, Nancy Smith, Vice-Presidentg Dale Pederson, Treasurer, and Don Osborne as Secretary. Our movie It Happens Every Spring went off with a big bang! The roller-skating party and our class dance were thoroughly enjoyed. Eflfefi-U2 Our Junior year with flying colors, we all decided that time was an important factor in our life. This year the time had come to select our Junior ringsg what a thrill this was. We were up in the world now. Our movie Ohl You Beautiful Doll relieved us all after January exams, and then we all breathlessly awaited the J unior-Senior Prom. Time moved quickly for us, and soon we were all dancing under the Blue Moon which was our theme. Mrs. Root and Mrs. Kirby, our supervisors, took great pains in making our Junior year very enjoyable. With Katherine Hoehn as President, Dale Pederson, Vice-Presidentg Don Osborne, Secretaryg and Ann Schur, as Treasurerg we all ended our Jtmior year at Crystal Beach on the Junior-Senior picnic, fun was had by all. The time finally arrived when we became Seniors, and before we all knew it we were en- joying the most pleasant year of our high school years. Ben Daycock was elected as President, Peg Regan as Vice-Presidentg Don Osborne as Secretaryg and Donna Darrow as Treasurer. As time marched on it brought with it, our dances, movie, magic show, food sales, our Christmas Breakfast, and our sensational Senior Play. Mr. Griffiths, our hard-working advisor, helped us to make them all very successful. To end this last all important year at C.C. C.S. we are planning our Junior-Senior Prom and picnic. Then last but far from least, Graduation Night, when we all will sorrowfully leave Churchville to enter the big-wide progressing world. LEFT TO RIGHT: D. Darrow, D. Osborne, B. Daycock, M. It was not a tour of Europe nor what we call a vacation, It was in a sense, but it also was part of a program sponsored by the American Field Service International Scholarships. The goal of the A. F. S. is a better tuiderstanding between people and nations. The A. F. S. believes that better understanding by people can be reached through the ex- change by nations of teen-age students. The foreign teen-age students are brought here to America to live with an American family for a year and attend High School. This is possible because many foreign students major in English at their school and can overcome the language barriers. The American teen-agers in most cases have a language barrier and can only be ex- changed during the summer period. It was the latter part of this program that I took part in. Many of you have asked me if I had a nice time while in Germany. I think I can honestly say that I had a marvelous time. It is something I will remember and treasure for the rest of my life. I only wish that more teen-agers could have the opportunity that I had. I feel I have seen and learned more about foreign peoples and their way of life in two short months than I could possibly have learned from books. You may think this strange but it is something which you have to experience to realize. I brought home with me a better appreciation of the feelings and lives of the people in Europe as well as the teen-agers from different parts of our own country who were also a part of this summer program. It also made me more appreciative of the freedoms and the conven- iences of living in America. I believe it has proved to me that freedom and opportunities as exist here can be found nowhere else in the world. I only hope that I did in my small way this summer, bring about a better understanding of Americans by the people I met in Europe particularly the teen-agers. Without your generosity my trip this summer could not have been made. Therefore I wish to express my sincere gratitude to everyone for making it possible. gy! As time progressed at Churchville-Chili we found ourselves with the national pro- blem of lack of classroom space, Since centralization in 1950 we have gradually been add- ing to our district schools. This year we have classes in twelve buildings including one room school houses, churches and a firehall. The conditions are very poor in the district school system, with inadequate plumbing and heating facilities. The school vote was pass- ed in 1953, allowing us to begin the construction of our elementary school, has been a great step forward from these adverse conditions. The construction was begun in the summer of 1954 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 1955. The new school mll house all the elementary grades with the exception of kindergarten. The kindergarten will be in the Chili 146. The new school with better rooms and equiprrfent will develop the children both physically and mentally, for future years. 52 X173 ff-STJT 4 2 5 Qi Jilxjx :Nw U2 N 4V 2 j:'6QlZ,5 N f 0 jjf ZW Q +-CTCC j 35 get X 5 , X ff! Beswick, K, Hoehn Mrs Daycock Dr Laglia J Quincey We the class of '55 wish, in view of Dr. Vail's recent retirement, to express our deepest gratitude for his 50 years of untiring service to the community. Dr. Vail moved to Churchville in 1904, where he soon became a friend IOCVEIYODS, and avery active member in community activities. Included in his many years of service he became a member of the Churchville School Board, Sunday-School teacher in the Con- regational Church, Boy Scouts Troop Leader, along with being active in many medical organizations. During the past 40 years or more he served as Health Officer for the towns of Churchville and With this job came the duties of Health Officer for our school. Dr. Vail's limited free time has been taken up by hunting and fishing. He was considered an authority in the identification of rare fish and was often called upon to identify fish unknown to game wardens. We deem it a privilege to have known Dr. Vail all of our lives. His retirement was agreat sorrow to us, We wish to express our appreciation to a great man and our good friend, Dr. Eli H. Vail. ALX .Q A1 AL. .4 FOURTH ROW: D. Kramer, D. Williams, P. Tallman, P. The band will play at the usual festivalsg such as the Christmas and Spring Fes- tivals, and at the Memorial Day parade. They have Played at Our Thanksgiving music assembly and it was very good. They started the program and ended it, while the chorus sang in between. The Senior Band has to work very hard, but the result is a masterpiece of musical composition and it is agreed by all the members that they have fun doing it. 66 K. Matheos Ice Cream 91 We of the Crest staff are proud to present to you, the graduating Seniors and the student body of Churchville-Chili Central School, your 1955 yearbook. It seems that sometimes the credit for things well done gets misplaced. We the editors of this year's Crest would like to set you straight. The tremendous job of producing a yearbook could never be possible without the hard work and cooperation of all concerned. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Connors, our advisor, who with untiring effort aided us in forming this book. Without her it would not have been possible. We also wish to thank the Art Staff whose useful ideas, attractiveprinting, and clever drawings have added greatly to the appearance of the 55 Crest . We are more than grateful for the wonderful work put forth by the Literary Staff. They deserve a hand for the long hours they spent compiling and composing the infor- mation you see here. The financial side of the Crest was ably taken care of by the Advertizing Staff. They really went out and got the ads this year. We wish to extend our thanks also to the Typing Staff whose accurate work has contributed greatly to the success of this yearbook. The Photography Staff also deserves much credit for their work in arranging schedules and aiding the photographer, We appreciate the work of the Sports Staff that has kept us informed about the sports events. Last, but far from least, is the Publicity staff whose job it was to encourage you to buy this yearbook. Again, we wish to thank everyone who had even a small part in the production of the 1955 Crest . It represents muchhard work and we hope that you will always cherish the memories it contains.
