Daylight saving time, which was instituted to save energy, had a greater effect since most of the year we came to school in the dark. The morning announcements often ended with a list of cars with their lights on. At mid-year the Lord ' s Prayer was mysteriously dropped from the announcements and a devotional though took its place. Meetings for various groups were packed into homeroom time as well as collecting dues, subscriptions, and charity money. The threats of being sent to the office did little to club tardiness. -—4 m IIM 1 u Virginia High School League Box 3697 University Station, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903 Athletic Participation — Parental Consent — Physician’s Certificate Form (Separate form required for each school year. File in Office of Principal) PARKING PERMIT Forms, permits, stickers, passes, tickets — they all control our lives here at Churchland. Official red tape is one of the school ' s most endearing characteristics. We must be insured, passed from place to place with notes and our cars must be registered and stickered. Our scores from tests, the importance of which we never realize, must be coded and sent off so other copies can again be coded and sent elsewhere. Money must be signed for by three people and then three copies kept! These are just a few examples, and on these pages are just a few of the forms that allow, restria, record, and control our lives. Some challenge our analytical minds, some are required, too many are a waste of time. The curriculum showed signs of bending a little this year with the beginning of speech classes and the consideration of mini-courses by the science department. Physics classes tried packet learning and Mrs. King ' s junior english class presented plays again. The permanencies, Mr. Mancuso, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Holbrook, and a few others returned, and there were a few fresh faces added. Homework still didn ' t get done too well, but the assignments kept coming. Exams and nerves found a common denominator in grades. But this year each class was just harder, or longer, more stimulating, or more boring. Here are some pictures of various pursuits of knowledge. Beyond just involvement and scholarship the students on these pages found ability and time to do just a little bit more and achieve distinction. Ryder seems happy after two years Even after five years at Churchland, walking into the principal ' s office can be unnerving. Entering, however, I found a not-so-unfriendly Mr. Ryder jammed behind stacks of filled manila folders which, when distilled, would become the policies and reports which control day to day life at Churchland. Since it was the first day on the new schedule, the bells had to be worked out, and finally, with instructions delivered to Mrs. Twiford, the interview began. Mr. Ryder ' s own educational background began in his home state of New York. There he attended Hofstra College on Long Island. After two years he transferred to the University of Virginia where he completed both a B.S. degree and a Master ' s in Secondary Education. After this, the second-year principal served in the Navy briefly before beginning his teaching career. More recently, 1967-1969, he received his advanced certificate for work beyond the Master ' s from William and Mary. It was while doing this work that he developed the highly successful Able and Ambitious program which he now administrates. Discussing the purpose of education, Mr. Ryder feels the school must prepare students socially in addition to professionally. The school must teach the students to survive responsibly in our society. They must be prepared to carry on effectively in the community and nation when no longer in school. Concerning senior privileges, particularly a class party and class trip, the principal said that past experience made him unable to take responsibility without so many rules that a good time would be impossible. Art-Science facilities inadequate Some of the changes Mr. Ryder would like to see have already begun in the physical reorganizing of the science department. The beginning of a reading lab next year will also be a great step forward, though it may create a space problem. The art facilities also need to be expanded to better house both materials and students. Attitudes can always be improved, of course, but generally he is satisfied as to the involvement of both students and teachers. L IUjJUUL b piUUICI Hard to pinpoint When asked whether he felt the dropout ' s problem was a failure on the part of the educational system, Mr. Ryder responded that it was a joint failure on the part o f the home, school, community, and individual. The seed of failure was planted long before the event occurred. This seed must be isolated and dealt with by all the major factors in the student ' s environment. Girl ' s Under general comments, Mr. Ryder felt that we were having a good year. He said he would like to see funding for girl ' s sports, who he added were leaders in the southeastern district. The school is on the incline and with the improvements already made, Chruchland is definitely becoming a leader. Art I 40 {p. 40.) HAPPY ST. PATRICK ' S DAY! 09 c o a o An annual should attempt to express the year as it was, not only the events, but also the climate and reactions of the students to these events. The Trucker Staff by means of the opinion questionaire, distributed at mid-term, sought to do this. An opinion should describe one ' s viewpoint; however, the majority of the answers were yes , no , or maybe . At first glance, the results were rather disappointing. There were, of course, some well-thought out responses; nevertheless, most were bland and apathetic. In another sense, these unemotional reactions also, portrayed the over-all atmosphere. Indeed, maybe we all were a little tired of politics, the system, and having to be concerned. C . what is Churchland to you? . a school a farce a time occupier an over-abundance of cliques, drunks, stuck up people, and dope fiends A place to learn how to get along with people of different ideas, philosophies, and beliefs. A friendly association with the teachers, students, and especially the females. an institution of lower edcuation a complete society in which the students are the inhabitants and the administration is the governing body. The whole system is run by an authoritarian form of government in which the students have hardly any power. My school and I love it. Too laden with tradition. an experiment on how pressure affects the human brain. 1 feel at home here. I ' ve met friends here. I ' ve spent a lot of time here. It ' s a lot of fun and work. It ' s a great school. As a general rule, the people of this community are rather narrow minded. We ' re too quick to jump to the defensive. We ' re always right and our ' s is the only opinion that matters. The students of Churchland High School cirticize their contemporaries as being a society of cliques. We ' re all members of cliques. Clique is not a synonym for snobbery. I think it is really this snobbery that we ' re criticizing. I agree that it does exist and that it is a definite obstacle to the non-elite, but I wonder if we don ' t need to evaluate our own attitudes and actions before we criticize each other so harshly. I ' ve never thought of Churchland as the finest academic institution, nor as the friendliest, but there is no other school in this area that I would prefer to attend. V ■ li V — Is student government effective in its role at Churchland? A . It is as far as the students who participate in the meetings are concerned, but most of the other students just don ' t care about the student government. Most of them are only waiting to get out of school. They don ' t care about what goes on inside of school. No, because the school is run completely by the faculty. It doesn ' t seem to affect me very much. What student government? Certainly, the student government is not as effective and strong as it should be. It is faced with competition from so many other groups, 44 . Is there an energy crisis? . I do believe the worlds energy is decreasing, but I think it hasn ' t reached a crisis yet. Theijig companies are just plotting to put the independents out of business. only in Mr. I Holbrook you look at the gas prices, then you tell me! 1 think its a scheme to take eyes off Watergate. Q A, authoritarian control by the administration, and so forth. However, we cannot blame the officers or the few other students who run the 5CA. Those who are to be blamed are ourselves. We, the masses of students are to blame for the few activities and seemingly total lack of student government. If we want privileges, or changes, or activities, the best course is through student government; by getting involved and not leaning on the council alone. Each and everyone of us can make student government fail, but we can also make it work. — Barry Kastner C Are the rules about having to have a pass to go everywhere repressive to education? A. Yes, definitely. We aren ' t babies or prisoners. It ' s just a big hassle! Those who complain about the use of passes are those who take advantage of the privileges to a wrong extent. Not to education! It is demeaning and repressive to every student, though! Yes, I feel as if I am in San Quentin instead of high school! This feeling is not conducive to education. V 45 Why so you think Nixon should be kept in office or impeached? A . He should be kept in office; we are crippled enough as it is. I think he should resign so that we can concentrate on other things. 1 think that he should be impeached, but not convicted. ' I don ' t think Nixon should be impeached because he is not the only one who ever was corrupt in our government. It goes on every day, as in the Portsmouth Police Dept. He just happened to be caught; I think he ought to resign because the people do not trust him. I believe that impeachment is the only practical way in which the air of suspicion surrounding the President can be cleared. The facts, whether good or bad, are more desirable than the uncertainty of not knowing one way or another. Without impeachment we would be destroying the foundations of our constitutional system. Let ' s remember that actual illegal crimes are not the only grounds for impeachment; lack of public confidence and lack of integrity are sufficient grounds. I cannot see why we can ' t call our lying politicians liars. I don ' t know — if they ' re going to impeach him, do it! If not, stop messing around with his life. He ' s got his game together; impeach Sam Ervin! V -01 - r C . Is it fair to give equal credit for all courses in determining class standing? A. Yes, all courses are of equal importance to the individual who takes them. No, there are many people who take the easy courses just so they can pass. There are others who take courses for they want knowledge. No, but who would be the judge of the amount of credits for each course? A V 46 To: All Co-Workers From: Welfare Committee Date: February 13, 1974 r Why do you come to school? A. Because it is mandatory. I ' m not sure. It is as good as the boring reruns and game shows in the morning. To prepare myself, so that after I finish college I can become a rich old miser. 1 love learning — pity schools spoil our desire to learn. To get an education and have fun, but I don ' t think it is possible to get an equal share of both. 1 often ask myself the same question. Because I want to learn about people, life, and the unknown. y A request has been made that smoking in the ladies ' lounge be limited to four days a week with one day a week designated as a non-smoking day. In order to clarify an earlier poll on this issue we would appreciate it if you would vote yes if yo u are in favor of limiting smoking to four days a week and no if you are in favor of unlimited smoking in the lounge by checking the appropriate space below. YES NO We as students are just as entitled to smoke as the teachers are. I ' ve been smoking for 3 years with my parent ' s permission, and if it means anything to you, I ' m a chick. It just doesn ' t make any sense why a school should stop me from smoking when I have my legal right from my parents. Comments: I ' m getting tired of these polls. Why don ' t students have a voice in selecting their cheerleaders? 1 may complain a lot about school and say its a drag. This really isn ' t true. I think CHS is a great place to be, and I think I will miss it. • Would you have gone to war or left the country if the nation had become involved in fighting during the Mid-East Conflict? A I would not have gone to war. As the song says, the U.S. has done everything possible for other countries, but none of them have done anything for us. I would have gone to war for peace. (?) 1 would have gone to war because I feel strongly for my country. But I do feel war is extremely stupid. If I were a man, I would have been a conscientious objector; but, if I had been refused, I would have left the country. Gone to war — This is a nationalistic feeling. I ' m of the female species, so I don ' t worry about it. V 47 c 5 CD Churchland High School in 1974 was an organization of students, students who made things happen, who became involved, and who determined a wide scope of achievement for themselves and their school. Teamwork was essential in each phase of the achievement. Students had to pool their resources, to develop and share their ideas and talents within the school, and to cooperate with others for the smooth operation of the team. As individuals arose to fulfill the needs for leadership, it became apparent that each person ' s contributions were dependent upon the group just as the group was dependent upon the leaders. To all who share in the hard work, the time, and the fun, rewards came in various forms. Some felt the deep-placed satisfaction in a job well done. Some shared the ecstatic joy that comes as long hard hours of labor melt into a shining success for all to behold. As for the failures, they were shared as to lighten the burden of responsibility that fell to each person involved. And, in a sense, every student who belonged to CHS, whether involved or not, had to accept the responsibility for each failure as well as for each success. Each individual student was a part of the whole, and the whole was influenced by and responsible for each failure and success. The members of this whole that failed to perform their specific duties and to contribute their small parts to the final achievement fimply forced harder work and deeper involvement upon others. The goals were reached as the year advanced and new doors toward even greater future achievement were opened. 50 A.F.S Top Left: Kathy Wetherby receives donatioris for the AFS Scholarship Fund. Armed with plastic containers and pamphlets, a small but hearty group of AFS members and volunteers decended upon the Churchland area for their annual Scholarship Fund Drive. Their dedicated hard work yielded over $400 toward the expense of supporting a foreign exchange student. Our AFS group not only succeeded in sponsoring this year ' s exchange student, Maya FHigashi, but also helped to start an AFS chapter at Western Branch. One of Churchland ' s students, Gwen Morgal, participated in the student abroad program in Germany during the school year. Although our AFS is well-known for its hard work, it is also well-known for its fun parties. The Black Studies group sponsored an interesting panel discussion and an assembly in observance of National Negro Histor y Week. The city-wide theme was Helping America Understand. This reading on the morning announcements began the observances: “The much used and often misunderstood colors of red, green, and black were introduced 50 years ago by Marcus Garvey as dramatic symbols of what Black people could accomplish in unity, with goals, and with organization and determination. Black is for our race, red for our blood, and green is our hope. Using these symbols, Garvey encompassed the proud past, the tragic present, and the limitless future yet to be. 52 Hiim 53 p Mock Election Let ' s elect a man in Va. who represents all Virginians, not just a small segment; a man who thinks about not only today, but tomorrow; let ' s elect Mills E. Work started weeks ahead to plan for the return of over 150 alumni. Adult corhmittees were formed and put to work finding their long-out-of-touch friends. Richie Babbitt and Beth Adams took charge of coordinating the adult committees, nominations and voting on the court, preparing the dinner and looking after the many details which went toward making the evening a success. Twenty-four girls were pinned as court candidates after a screening by the teachers and then by the football team. The student body then voted on six juniors and six seniors for this year ' s court. The girls and their escorts were presented at an assembly and then the queen and maid of honor were voted on. The highlight of the whole affair came when Mr. Ryder crowned Nancy Morgan queen and Jeannine Wright her maid of honor. A dance was held afterwards and Dirty Sneakers provided the music. The S.C.A. increased its budget to a record high of $1700 through the various activities. The Marching Band also participated in the annual Oyster Bowl. The long trek was rewarded with good seats at the game itself. Several members of the band performed at the Lion ' s Show, acting as a “show band. Many members of the band were accepted in the area regional band, as well as some in the area workshop band. A Christmas concert held jointly with the Chorus was deemed a high success by several members of the faculty. Band 61 Top Right: Craig Dill blasts away. Top Left: Mike Howell is equipped. Workshops were conducted to acquaint the people with the Model General Assembly and several MCA officers were elected. There were local legislators present to answer questions that came up. Lonnell Freeman served as Virginia ' s Youth Governor this year. This position offered first-hand knowledge of governmental operations. All of the Tri-Hi-Y members who attended MG A learned much in this area. 64 Aside from marching drills and physical development, the R.O.T.C. cadets ' course of study included training in citizenship and leadership. Military organization, first-aid, warfare, and public spe aking were other important areas of study. Despite their disappointment with the lack of interest, the dedicated staff worked hard to put out a paper which covered the wide range of student activities and school functions. Each month there were interesting editorials, record reviews, humorous gossip columns, and choice letters to the editor airing dissatisfaction and criticism. The 9-member staff spent many long hours writing stories, counting type, uncovering news, and doing all the other tasks involved in publishing a paper. After many long hours of rehearsal, the talented cast performed the difficul t parts exceptionally well. The action of the play centered around the experiences of several students in a school for emotionally disturbed children. Outstanding performances by Gary Henry and Judy Evans, accompanied by the talents of the rest of the cast, brought favorable responses from the audience. The funny scenes were hilarious and the serious scenes were performed with deep sincerity by the actors. Well worth twelve years of striving to achieve. And the Seniors — only assembly. For the blissful period of some twenty minutes the Seniors enjoyed their own assembly. Robert Henkel conducted the class business meeting touching on such popular subjects as the class party, the class trip, and class dues. No matter how strong the disappointment, the Seniors rallied and showed that they were a united group. Ties and tennis shoes for the boys, and skirts, argyle socks, and tennis shoes for the girls set the Seniors apart. The ravishing cheerleaders led a unique pep rally for the Senior team. The little surprise proved to be quite a surprise for Fred Hamilton who was elected to reign as the first Powder Puff Queen. There was a marked feeling of anticipation on the day of the game. Friction between certain members of the teams showed the true colors of too many girls. The game itself was quite entertaining as was the cheerleading. Unfortunately the clock ran out on the Seniors, leaving the score 18-8. Chalk up one for the juniors. And so ended the Seniors ' glorious day. As individuals we left childhood and assumed responsibility by forced decisions. As a group we were at the bottom of a high school of 1100 people in the eighth grade and returned for our freshman year at the bottom of a smaller school with the eighth grade moved to the new junior high. Our sophomore year saw a larger and more varied class with the beginnings of bussing. In our last two years the class and school both attained stability. When we arrived as sub-munchkins the school was only one yeai in the Portsmouth school system and with the exception of a few old-guard teachers Chesapeake left it bare. So we watched the gradual growth of a school as well as of ourselves. Strides in the athletic program best exemplify this since as many games were won our senior year as in the first three years we were here. We grew, changed in form and character, and expanded with our school. Lawton Ernest Baker — Homeroom Rep, 9; Latin Club 9; ).V. We left in a year when new-found peace gave-in to war; certainty resigned to doubt. War now was not a distant thing to protest in class, but a thing we might have to fight. The environment lost importance when compared to the comforts which numerous crises and shortages threatened to take away. Beliefs in the American ideal became fogged by compromised principles and unanswered questions about government. Likewise the certainty of early youth had given way to the doubts of our more experienced selves. Still the change is not complete but much was determined here as to our future. 104 105 HONOR GRADUATES (First row) Carol Boswell, Irvenia Waters, Lina Banister, Jan Elmore, Peggie Alexander. The Truckers, committing the most turnovers of the year, suffered their first setback of the new season at the hands of the Manor Mustangs in the opening game, 12-0. The second game, against Indian River, began with a charge as Alfred “Choke” Harper threw a 41 -yard touchdown pass to Robert Henkel. Harper scored later to lead the Truckers to a 28 to 8 victory. An excellent defense and a fourth quarter strike from Keith Hawkins to Mike Copley provided Churchland with the only score of the game, and gave Wilson their only setback of the year. The Deep Creek Hornets ran through the Trucker ' s defense, winning the game 28-8, and evening the Trucker ' s record at 2-2. A strong defense led by Ricky Davis and Nick Arcese, as well as a good offensive showing by “Choke Harper put the Truckers on the winning scene once again as they defeated the Norcom Greyhounds. The powerful Great Bridge Admirals beat the Truckers 35-7. The Truckers suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of the Western Branch Bruins, when a last second field goal gave them a 17-14 victory. Alfred Harper showed everyone what they had been waiting for by scoring 5 touchdowns, leading the Truckers to a 42-20 win over Granby. Keith Hawkins passed for 2 touchdowns and 199 yards though suffering a mild concussion and leaving the same in the third quarter. Two touchdowns by “Choke Harper and the extra point kick by Arcese helped the Truckers defeat Oscar Smith 13-12. Two touchdown passes. Harper to Henkel and Hawkins to Mitchell, were not enough to beat the Cradock Admirals. field hockey The Girls ' Field Hockey Team experienced a most rewarding season, due to their diligent practice and devotion. Pooling their talents together, they came up with the best hockey team CHS has ever produced. Their record for the season, including the Tidewater Field Hockey Tournament, was 3-1-2. The individual and team efforts of the girls brought about their successful season. gifi bo ketboll The Churchland Truckerettes ended their season undefeated. Having a 10-0 record, they were awarded the Southeastern District Winners Trophy. Lynn Wilkes, the most outstanding offensive player, led the team ' s scoring with an average of 24 points per game. Susan LaMotte, the most outstanding defensive player, averaged 10 rebounds per game. The season began with fairly easy competition. Some of the later games, however, did prove to be exciting. The first game with Western Branch was nip-and-tuck, but the Truckerettes managed to break away and win by 8 points. The last game of the season was played at Wilson High School. It was a close game with the score tied at the end of the third quarter. The Truckerettes were victorious, ending the game with a 6-point lead over Wilson. The women faculty challenged the girls ' team to a game which proved to be quite interesting and amusing. The women managed to stay alive throughout the game, which ended in a 33-33 tie. country Our cross country team which had a “middle of the road” year. The pressure was put on the underclassmen when senior, Gary Creamer was put out of running because of a dislocated elbow. The underclassmen came through though with times like: (13:35) by Eddie Townsley and (13:40) by Steve with the track distance ranging up to 2.6 miles. Also, the team took first place in the Southeastern District in the Annual Jaycee Meet. bosketboll Churchland ' s Varsity Basketball team suffered what is commonly called a rebuilding year with a 5-14 record. This year ' s edition had only 2 players with any considerable varsity experience. The team depended heavily upon senior David Kampman. The other starters who contributed to the team ' s efforts were: “Choke Harper, whose coolness and scoring efforts were a pleasant surprise; Richard Conklin who provided an anchor in the middle of the defense (ranked 2nd in district) John Fields, a junior who provided the team with many rebounds despite being an academic casualty at mid-term; Fred Hamilton, and Robin Yost, two quick sure-handed guards who alternated the starting role. In non-conference games the Truckers were 3-6 with wins over Great Bridge, Cradock and Indian River. The district record of 2-7 was only good enough for an 8th place tie with Manor which ended the season with a loss. The season marked the 1st under Coach Griffin in which the team did not participate in the district tournament. The Truckers gained some consolation for an otherwise dismal season when 6 ' 4“ David Kampman was named the All-Southeastern District first team. Kampman was scoring and rebounding leader with 15 points and 12 rebounds a game. wrestling The CHS Wrestling team had a relatively good year, ending the season with a 9-2 record and sending five wrestlers to the Regional and one to the State. When you consider that the team only had three seniors (one who was unable to wrestle because of an illness early in the year) filling the 13 positions, we have an excellent outlook fo r the future. Many of the players said that some of their roughest competition this year came from Churchland wrestlers trying for the same weight class on the team. This year ' s strength lay in the abilities of four underclassmen: Tim McKinney (103), Mike Monoghan (98), Jimmy Larose (1 19), and Tony Facenda (Heavyweight); all four of whom advanced to the Regional with Tony going on to the State. gymnastics The gymnasts prepared for the year with a full round of practice and a series of practice meets. However they only had one meet in which they were slightly outscored possibly due to the absence of Susan Gallop, because of an injury. Elizabeth “Lizard Reland carried the team winning a variety of awards including Best All Around Gymnast at the Southhampton Meet. She also represented CHS in state competion. 127 B£l 6 tyttn WilkeS Vicky Connd econd Row;®etsy Dezafra, Ruth Effnore, Ann Brovyn, Vickie Taylor, Beverly Buch S-RpV; Laura Cheryl Mason, Theresa ; ndevaf t,, Dana K sey, Susan LaMotte, Amy Scarr, Cindy Bolling, Kathy Markle, Mrs. Lassiter : StK ' ' ' r- MU UPA? We have returned to use of body copy and have used a great deal of candid photography in this year ' s book. The divisions and inclusions of material are arbitrary on the part of the editors. The graphic concepts employed are borrowed from among the best high school and college annuals in the country. Many of the ideas were picked up at Seminar III at Salem College, which was attended by six staff members. The staff had its up and downs during the year. Most of the work was done by a very few people, but most of the staff came through in times of desperate need. Chartpak Velvet touch lettering was used to set headlines in various parts of the book. Sports and Business-Blippo. p.20, p. 26-31 Broadway Engraved, p. 24-25 Helvetica Medium Outline, p. 34 Souvenir Light, p.44, p. 136-137 Windsor, p.63, p.212 Palatino. p. 42-43 Peignot Medium, p. 134-135 Tiffany Heavy. All other headlines are in Optima set by Hunter Publishing. Body copy and identification in 6 pt., 8 pt., and 10 pt. Optima with bold. Handwriting was supplied by Anne Hurley.
