BOUTH PUBLIC LIBRA Miss Barbara Vavrek . . . . . 1 ee) Advisory Corer erp rps PUK DEDICATION To show that we are eternally grateful for the guidance she has rendered and the knowledge she has shared with us, we take great pride in dedicating this 1956 issue of The Trucker to Mrs. Winifred M. Davis. Mrs. Davis is more than a teacher of English. To the students of Church= land she is a friend in whom the y can confide knowing that she has their best in- terest at heart. We hope that in our small way we have expressed our appreciation for the fime and effort Mrs. Davis has spent in our behalf. FOREWORD Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Henry W. Longfellow In order to record the happy phases of school life at Churchland, this yearbook has as its purpose to retrace the footsteps that have been embedded by the students of 1955-1956, As you travel along the well worn paths and recall the moments that have meant the most to you, may you find your treasured memories outlined in the sands of time. When the years have passed and this year= book is opened to help recall the pleasant days spent in school in the company of friends, we hope that it will bring back vivid memories of the class yr eye}. At right, presidents Aurora Velez, Robert Corbell and Claire Frances Bell admire the gift left to the school by the class of 1955. Tennyson | . | TYPICAL DAY OFPERS VARIED ACTIVITIES A typical Trucker may begin the day by pausing to admire the school's trophy case--a reminder of past athletic achievements- then rush on tohomeroom to begin the day with a solemn Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. Our typical Trucker might then be called to ai assembly, possibly to witness the 'tapping' of the May Queen. A visit to the library for reference work, or to get a book to read for personal pleasure may be made before the student gets down to business in a day of classes, studying and receiving instruction. The typical student will find a buzz of activity in the cafeteria--- and that all important commodity, FOOD. After School, Typical Trucker may take a trip to the office to buy a ticket for the big game. A lucky Trucker may get a ride home with a friend, or just pause for a few words of conversation. Then, of course, there's always the big game itself where our Trucker will be found participating or encouraging the team from the sidelines. sp oN} ay A SOPHOMORES MISS GALLAGHER'S HOMEROOM FIRST ROW: Christina Poor, Patty Link- field, Flossie Miltier, Patsy Plum, Flor- ence Matthews. SENIORS PRESHAP A DATE Wate UY A Date With Judy is a three act comedy portraying the hectic lives of teenagers and their parents, written by Aleen Leslie. Sixteen year old Judy Foster leads a life that may be dé@scribed as far from dull. In her ever changing moods, she carrys her father’s (Mr. Foster) patience far past the bréaking point. However, Mrs. Foster usually restores order. | oS Judy is blessed with a humorous brother of twelve, whonever tires of playing practical jokes, and a quite unsophisticated, gangling boyfriend. Adding her bit to the fun is style-crazed Mitzi, Judy's girlfriend. There is never a dull moment when Judy, her friends, and her neighbors try to solve the everpresent pro- blems of teenagers. Lead Christine Buck (Judy) explains a scene to understudies Jimmy, Miltier and Tommy Browney (on couch) Anna Howell, Richard Deaton, and Jimmy Bell. 5 MANY WORKING COMMITTEES | VECESSARY FOR SUCCESSFUL | PLAY PRODUCTION FIRST ROW: Anne Groce, chairman; Shirlee Monacelli, Mary Jo Townsend, make-up committee. VARIETY OF PLAYS PRESENTED The three one=act plays given this spring were The Ming Thing , The Plum Tree , and Grena- chika. All three plays were directed by Miss Lolita Diaz. The Ming Thing was presented by the 8th grade dramaticsclass. The comedy revolved around the attempted theft of a valuable ming vase. The play was written by Bernice Mc Mahon. “The Plum Tree is a tender and pathetic play about five aged and disturbed women in a home for the aged. It is the duty of the matron of the home and the assistant nurse to keep these womenhappy and satisfied. Three of the oldest are to be committed to an insane asylum, and the nurse plans a party to send them off in their best humor. The tea party is almost spoiled by an insane and dangerous Swedish woman. The play was written by Mary Ellen Chase and presented by the high school dramatics class. The cast of Grenachika was chosen by competitive try-outs, and was selected as the school's entry in the District One-Act Play Festival. The play, written by Merle Banton Young, involves only three characters. Appelzine, a lazy, unscrupulous mountaineer, waylays Molo, the pompous and conceited Magistratos of Megglandopp, in his cabin and stealshisgold. Grenachika, his flirtatious and nagging wife then steals the gold and runs away with the Magistratos. The cast of Grenachika is pictured below. One of the most outstanding events of the school year was the presentation of the out= | door Christmas Pageant | sponsored by the Band | and the Band Parents | Association. The pag- eant was the result of the efforts of many school and community groups. The adult chairman of this acti- vity was Mrs. Herbert S. Delk. Student chair- men were Arlene Wright and Steve Pruitt. PAGEANT IS RESULT OF COMBINED EFFORTS Shown on this page are mem-= bers of the chorus and players from one of the scenes. Above, Miss Lolita Diaz rehearses one of the scenes with Mike Pitt, Steve Tompkins, and Bobby Stan- ton. Miss Diaz also wrote the narration for the pageant. Shown at left is Miss Billie Tyler, Director of the school chorus as she inspects one of the cos-= tumes worn by Charlotte Baugher while Jimmie Currie and May Jo Townsend look on. The pagent, given in the form of a tableau, had Ray Turner from sta- tion WTAR as its narrator. The singing chorus inc |uded members of the high school chorus and members of the choirs from the Churchland Baptist, West End Baptist, St. Andrews Methodist, Cen- tenery Methodist, Community Metho- dist, Simonsdale Presbyterian, and West Norfolk Baptist Churches. The speaking chorus was composed of members of the Thespian Troupe and the dramatics classes. DECEMBER IS CLIMAX OF MUCH ACTIVITY Following the religious portion of the pageant, a visit from a modern Santa who arrived by airplane was the signal to begin the distribution of 1000 boxes of candy to the younger folks in the audience. A reception for those most closely associated with the pag- eant was also held at the close of the formal program. Mr. Davis A. Mitchell super- vised the decorations used in the pag= eant. He is shown at right, working with Virginia Jereme, Polly House, and Tommy Riddick. Many of the activities of the Band Parents Association were com= pleted behind the scenes. Such acti- vities included painting, sewing cos= tumes, and boxing candy. These two pages in the year- book are sponsored through the courtesy of the Band Parents Association. At left, Mr. Johnnie E. Rich super- vises some of his indus= trial arts students in the construction of some ‘props’ for the pageant. In addition to the ply- wood props constructed in the industrial arts classes, many necessary items were contributed by the art classes con- ducted by Mrs. Lena W. Price. At the pageant, live animals and trees added a touch of real- ism. At left, Mrs. Her= bert Delk takes a peek at the food being prepared for the reception following the pageant. Arlene Wright and Mrs. R.R. Powell con= gratulate Mrs. Mary P. Burks, dietician, for a job well done. Harvest Queen candidates and majorettes served at the reception. Below, members of the candy committee are shown in the process of pre= paring the candy for Santa to give away. Shown here are Nancy Hughes, Jack Edwards, Donald Williams, Pattie Delk, Santa, and Peggy Edwards.
