F? 1961 - - Vol. 4 Galesburg, Illinois .-.... -. .- ....... The constant activity of our school helped us to choose our theme, Busy as a Bee. During a school day everyone is busy striving to do his best, taking advantage of our fine curriculum. Students are busy rushing from class to class . . . to their lockers . . . to their activities. In fact, there is a continual hum going on all over the school -- every school day. It's not just a melodious hum, but it is the hum of busy, enthusiastic workers. To be as busy as a bee is truly a task, but we, the Flashback Staff, feel that George Churchill School, as a whole, has easily lived up to this. That is why our theme. Busy as a Bee, represents our school so well. You will find many happy memories pictured throughout this yearbook. As you scan through it, you will remember that this, above others, has been a busy, but fun-filled year. We like this publica- tion of the yearbook, and we think you will too. always as a flashback of the school year 1960 - 1961. Keep it with you oQ 'o:o' .h 0 . e 00 Ou . o ..$ 0 O n. .9 .0 o O 0 oh. Miss Verla Hays leaves literally thousands of boys and girls, men and women, who have come under her influence. Always a retiring, quiet person. she has reflected her serious. calm, and diligent nature in her teaching. For those who have sought her counsel, she has been sympathetic, understanding, and helpful. Miss Hays completed her high school education in Charleston. Illinois, in 1914. Further schooling included college work leading to a Bachelor's Degree. a Master's Degree. and post- graduate work in the field of science. Her teaching experiences have been as'signments in elementary schools, high school, and junior high schools in Cleveland. Ohio. Hinsborough, Paris. Springfield, Grayville, Redmond, and Galesburg. Miss Hays started her Galesburg teaching in 1946 at the Hitchcock J unior High School. In 1957 she came to the new George Churchill Junior High School. With all good wishes for health and happiness in her years of retirement. we, the Flash- back Staff of 1961, respectfully dedicate this book to Miss Hays. Classes Geography Many sights come into view as we take a trip throughout the world by way of charts, maps, reports, and books. We ex- plore north, south, east, and west to learn about the customs and ways of other countries. Since English is of great importance in everyday life, it is necessary for us to learn the primary and the more advanced fundamentals of English. History The study of our nation and its devel- opment throughout its time is the work of the history classes. Skits, debates, trials, etc., make the class periods interesting. Radio, television, newspapers, and magazines help us to follow the current happenings of the world. When election day came, we were prepared to follow intelligently because of what we had learned in civics class. Spankh Si Senor might be one of the many phrases that the Spanish classes have learned throughout the school year by such devices as Spanish recordings picked up by earphones, and by books. Science F acts about our world are discovered and studied by students in our science department with a course in general science introducing students to all fields of the subject studied later in high school. Mathematics Throughout life one will meet the need for numbers. Mathematics is taught as a required course in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. It is the aim of all to learn as quickly as possible concepts. relationships, and computational skills needed in arithme- tic. Ninth grade students have the privilege of taking algebra in order to increase their knowledge of mathematics, the basis of all sciences. Business Education-Typewriting Fini-IVII iMGSR K1 7f? In order to become worthy of positions in the business field, we prepare ourselves by taking the elective course of busi- ness education. It covers many fields showing ways in which business serves the individual. To become better business citizens of the community is one of its goals. Helping us with our studies now. preparing us for business life later, typing is one of many elective courses offered to the students of Churchill. Industrial Arts - Home Living The men of tomorrow's industries are being formed today in our industrial art classes. Churchill boys are being trained in the modern techniques of industry. One of the projects essential to becoming a modern-day homemaker is shown here in our home living class. These future homemakers also learn to prepare food that is needed in our daily diets. Time is also spent learning about room decorations and home nursing. Phygcal EducaHon To stay in good condition and to have fun at the same time, we have a physical education class three days a week. The other two days of the week, the physical education period is devoted to the studying of physical welfare. hh One of the enjoyable courses taught at Churchill is ele- A rt mentary art. Sketching, drawing, and painting are a few of the fundamentals thagiate explored during the year. u 46me35?+$4$;$ x Mr . Kenneth Clausen Mr . Roy Pearson Mr . Cafeteria records are kept by Mrs. Ethel Dudley, Cafeteria Manager for District 205. Mrs . Ethel Dudley We Couldn't Do Without 'Em Mr. Brown. Mrs. Cooper, and Mr. Stoeckel h INAFIX We re ally would be in a fix without our custodians! They're always hard at work keeping our school in tip-top condition and always on hand whenever the need for them arises. This fine group of people is cheerful and cooperative and often receive not enough credit for what they do. I'm sure you will agree that we couldn't do without 'ern! We salute you, the care- takers of the George Churchill Junior High School. Such meetings were al- so he 1 d for both the seventh a nd eighth grades. u'll,1,, What DID you do NOW? Hard at work 0 again? Our Preparations For Lunch Each morning the ticket sellers can be found busily selling tickets- - daily, weekly, and monthly. Noon hour finds the halls a crowded mass of students and teach- ers hurrying to get a place in the lunch line. Watchful and alert, the ticket punchers must watch for students with defaced and used lunch tickets. The Cafeteria Buzz Always busy to prepare us delicious meals. our cooks have a tremendous job preparing food for about 800 students each day. Students are given free meals for doing suchwork as serving des- sert in the lunchroom. Lunch hour gives us a chance to visit with friends and hear the latest ha pp en in gs. Six hundred persons can be fed at one time. - - - After Hours - - - Boys do wash d ishes, and plenty of them. Cafeteria workers must be efficient and dependable as these boys imply. Many students have never had the chance to view the dishwashing machine used in our kitchen. Our milk is always promptly delivered by our milkman. This is quite a job for a schoolaslarge as Churchill. The production ofa school yearbook takes much time and effort on the part of all concerned. The task of the yearbook staff has been to tell to the best of our ability the history of this school year, and it is our hope that we have achieved a result agreeable to all. The staff has been appreciative of the leadership of the co-editors of the book; they are Rosalie Nelson and Mimi Johnson. All of the art work with the exception of cutouts has been done by Mimi. Especially do we thank our adviser. Miss Miller, without whose invaluable services as chief executive, trouble-shooter, director, and good friend, this publication would not have been possible. The staff wishes to take this opportunity to thank the entire school for its cooperation and response. The staff also wants to thank Mr. Sells for his wonderful photographs and his patience with us. Coach Edwards left Coach Swise right Makes First Kick on New Field Larry Foster had this to say about the new football field: As I am on the football team, I am very glad to see that we finally got OUR OWN football field. When it became ours, it meant that we would not have to go to Lombard to have our home games but could have them right out in our field. That hundred yard by fifty yard field may not mean very much to many of you, but it's like a trophy to the players who practice and play their games on it. The school would assure Larry that the field does mean much to each student. Above we have pictured the first kick on our own field.. It doesn't feel like the building is on fire. It wasn't on fire, but periqdic fire drills are held throughout the school year so that students are pre- pared for emergencies which might arise. When the Churchill Band marches, it plays. This picture was taken during the Thanksgiving vacation when the parade opened the Christ- mas season. Santa was somewhere in the parade. Another proud scene of Churchill students in action! You. too, can tell that our school is a busy one.
