THE GEORGE CHURCHILL JUNIOR H1953 SCHOOL i 'PRESENTS kw ' kXWI fw THE CHURCHILL FLASHBACK' l960 -- VOL.3 . GAEESBURG, ILLIWAKQ WE? Three is a charm. What does the quotation mean? Does it mean that the number three is a charm--or a token of good luck? Three is a charm has a special meaning for our school. This third year of operation has been spectacular in success and exciting experiences for the students and faculty. The present ninth graders are completing their third year at Churchill . . . the seventh graders, who began junior high school life here this year, had an Opportunity of looking forward to three full, fun- loving years of junior high school . . .our eighth graders naturally tie the beginning and the end of the three together. Our yearbook theme, ThreeIs aC1harm, helps us tell the history of the school year through drawings, pictures and phrases. We, the staff of the Flashback, hope you will enjoy reviewing this charming year of 1959-1960. MINNIE HATTEN is regarded as a conscientious teacher who is admired by her pupils. Beyond the call of duty in her work, she has opened doors of learning to her students enabling them to win outstanding awards such as the Freedom ShrineAward. In the community, she is president of the International Cultures Association; she is active in the Galesburg branch of the American Association of University Women and is Past Regent of Rebecca Parker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Several years ago, Mrs. Hatten was awarded the local Teacher-of-the-Year certificate, presented by the Federated Womenis Clubs. Is coffee served in the classes? No, but many after-school meetings in different departments are held from time to time. This one we'd like to attend! The Music Parents surely make good chili! Mr. Sells is the one responsible for the pictures found in the yearbook . W h e n he has a camera, beware! What do we have here? It looks to be a Faculty- Student Scrim- mage! G W V F. H F. B SEEING IS GOOD HEALTH HELPS Each year all ninth graders have the advantage of having their teeth examined at the George Churchill nurse's of- fice by Dr. Way, a specialist in orthodenture. Over and over Dr. Way pleasantly says, Open wide, as he prepares to examine the teeth. Mrs. McCreight, school nurse, is getting information from a student in regard to health records which are kept for all students. Checking the eyes is a yearly task of the school nurse who is assisted by members of the P. T. A. To be able to see well is es- sential to efficient learning. MAKE GOOD STUDENTS In connection with the physical education pro- gram of our junior high school, health classes, and safety classes too, are held each week. Th e physical education instructor keeps a record of weight and height changes of the students from year to year. In this picture Mr. Swise is weighing a group of boys. Mrs . McCreight The nurse's quarters are equipped with first aid supplies. During the day many minor, plus a few major. accidents occur. On hand is Mrs. McCreight to sterilize and bandage cut fingers as Vshe is doing in the above picture. Cots are available for students when they become ill during school hours. TEACHERS HAVE X-RAYS Teachers of District 205 comply with the state law which says they must have chest x-rays once a year. The mobile unit comes to Gales- burg. Here are some faculty members signing for the examin- ation. Mr. Allen is in the process of having his chest x-rayed. He looks as though he might be enjoying the process. q Three healthy smiles come to- gether in this snap. But who isn't glad to see the postman? F. This is one of the big events of our school, for the proceeds from this drive help pay for the school yearbooks. Students in this audience were busy studying magazine prices and listening to sales techniques. Those on the platform were the magazine captains chosen from the individual homerooms. Because of the large enrollment, fewer assemblies were held this year, but this picture depicts our large auditorium in full student use. This picture does not show the students who stand when assemblies are held. A few must do this each time.
