A . , Commending Qfiicer JON. our president, head of our school parties and activities, show- ed the student body a wonderful time this year. BGARD QF STRATEGY LAST picture taken for the 1947 Lahontan was this one of our friends, the School board members. Mrs. Foster said she wanted to save the most handsome group for last, and you can see we gave her her wish. School board members never have an easy job, but this year's group have been unusually busy. In addition to running the school, they've had the added problems of the gymnasium we're so anxiously waiting for, the shop We're beginning to build, the securing ot state funds for improving our school. Board members were very active in securing passage of legislation to give the school state money to boost teacher's salaries and to make many badly needed repairs on our building. Board members have also had to cope with the problem of a rapidly increasing student body. This work would snow under less capable men, but our board members have managed the work and have been around to boost us at games too. They come to our parties, our musicals, our dinners and public speaking events and always look as it' they were having a good time. Mr. Scholz has served longest on the board. He was joined this year by Mr. Coverston, last year by Dr. Woodward. Although board meetings are held formally on the first Monday night of each month, board members are frequently at the high school, wondering how much longer the poor old furnace will continue to draw, wondering how they can stretch the budget to buy the student body equipment they want. To the school board, our thanks for a job well done. Dr. G. T. Woodward, Frank Scholz. Roy Coveiston, Wallace Smith 0 9 NV Y, 1:31 Hifi, ,rw ffzizflfilvf. 1.0133 s union fl' COlTlmdf'lCiZl' L, in Chief WALLACE SMITH. Principal THE MAN with the best disposition, the friendliest smile and more pa- tience than anyone we ever saw is our principal, Mr. Smith. He is new here this year and has done a wonderful job keeping things going. He listens to all the troubles us students bring to him andi tries to find the best way out, when someone wants to change his or her schedule, he spent hours of his valuable time trying to decide which coursewould be best and when you go in and change a schedule from five to ten times, and he still smiles and is willing to help you-that is really endurance. He passes in the hall and always gives a friendly smile and on the street it isa wave. ALICE MAFFI. Secretary PIN-UP GIRI. ALICE is always willing to give us passes when we're late for classes, though she sometimes wishes we were'nt so slow. Without her, Mr. Smith wouldn't know what to do- she writes his letters, etc. And we don't mean love letters. She is a gay sort of a little affair and if you sneak up real quietly, you can some- times hear her humming to herself. Of course we know just exactly who she is think- ing of. She is a swell gal, and we all think the world of her. GCDLD ELMO URICE Band CIXILS EI1,.,1lSh IV HERBERT CHIARA xt Fh ht It ethlmt 11 D mm Auto Methnuts Jumox St S1011 WES GOODNER P E. But not nowdaysl A senior is just another fellow in the halls. YVe are real Democrats. VVe be- lieve in freedom for all. Ot' course there are a few restrictions, but mostly we want the kids to say when they see us in the halls, is, There go our bnddiesf' not, There go those bullies. 'We faultless iahemj seniors are kept likewise by our brave Geno Steve. He's a happy go-lucky fellow but he keeps us busy and we have oh, so much fun! I-Betty Sanford, our cute secretary: Jack, our handsome vice-president: and Dean, our peppy treas- urer, really know how to run our at't'airs. YVe are proud of our boy Louie who has won so many FFA honors and so much money. Pete Mori has done a swell job, too. They both deserve every bit of praise they have received. The sports heroes Come from our elass too. 'Ne don't have to mention their names-but we will introduce them anyway. Meet the stars of sports-lion, Windy, Galen and Geno. The An- nual and Highview staff are made up mostly of our senior girls too. VVe've had loads of fun this year and we hate to leave and we know you'll miss us, but life must go on and so must we-so we all say to all of you--Farewell friends, and we hope you have as much fun next year as we did this year. 'ls-1 it Frances Springer, vice president: Helen Rice, secretary: Junior Palmquest, treasurer Bctty Allyn, president. LIEUTENANTS BEAUTY and brains just don't mix, so we've heard. Hut right here and now we want to file complaint. We know what we're talking about because Betty Allyn, our pretty president, has led us throughout our school year and looking back we all have to admit she has done a good job. We gave our dance, our assembly and everything came oft' just as we planned it- good, good, good! Frances Springer, Junior Palmquest and Helen Rice have helped our little president quite a bit in her work. too. VVith all ot' them working together as they did we have had lots ot' fun. VVe can afford to brag, too. because the one and only student body president came from our own little group. You all know him by the name of .lon Hammond. When we put on our assembly, a group of girls called the Sugar Howl Eight, sang their own theme song and also some popular ones. The skit was a comedy and Shannah Olson, the leading lady, who is talented in acting comedy parts, gave out with so many corny sayings that tears ac- tually rolled down the cheeks ot' some students. The most musical people come from the junior class this year. The pop- ular vocalists, Frances Springer. Helen Rice and Mary I.ou Stiverson. have formed a trio all their own and they are really pretty sharp. Ernie Moiola and Mickey Melendy and Hob Zilkey are outstanding sports- men. Ernie for basketball and Mickey for pole vaulting, Both ot' them are anxious for next year when they can really show their stuff. l.QUlES Betty Allyn Lois Berryman iii Our own little homemakers are popping up out of nowhere, too. Mary Getto won first place in county style dress revue. Margaret Soares won first in clothing achievement. Anita Mussi placed first for her record books. Lois Corkill won state honors for her be-a-u-t-iful canning! She got to go to Chicago to the National 4-H Convention and what that gal didn't see, well we surely would have liked to have seen just half of it. She spent a night in the largest hotel in the world and it didn't even excite her! Carl Lemons is the only male yell leader in the school and he has a gay ol' time, believe us. Joe Bell and Jim Woods won state farmer degrees in agriculture this year. Mildred Prouty won the Lions Club speaking award. She really had a job but she did splendidly representing Churchill County. Junior Palmquest is one of the best men on the B squad basketball team. Why, without Junior, there probably wouldn't have been a B squad at all! Cyril Schank won S100 award for rural electrification work. Oh, the lucky girl who goes with Cyril! Now to get down to the more home folks. Lila Lou Baumann is president of F.H.A. and she got that honor because she is such a wonderful cook. Some lucky man! Ad chaser, that is. Now if only there were at least one or two more people in this school as smart as our straight A student, Emi Kito, we just would be sitting pretty. Calista Kolstrup is Mr. Van Huevelan's pet and was chosen secretary of that big commercial club. 1 X .4 , G . 'Sh I 1 I W . 2 ws '.v4', i! The freshmen are new and attract the attention of the rest of the school, and the faculty, the juniors and seniors run the school, so we, the sophs, sit in between all this commo- tion and really have fun, without being in the limelight. Last year Mrs. Sawyer got us off to a good start under her strict hand plus a few demerits. This year, however, we have taken in a few more demerits and our behavior has been questionable, hut then after all, we're not bash- ful freshmen anymore. Our class officers, Kunio, Bob, Jean and Louie got us off to a good start this year. We gave an assembly that was really tops. All the kids had to do was ask the questions and Bob Farley, the wonderful fortune teller, told the rest. Our sophomore hop, for which the gym was gaily decorated, was one of the most successful of the school year. We had good eats and even the faculty enjoyed the fun. Numerous school heroes come from our wonderful call and next year many of the best players on our football and basketball teams will come from the little B and C squaders this year in our class. A few of our girls be- long to Alpha Lambda and some of us boys belong to F.F.A. Mr. Haskell and Mr. Gray keep order in session-sometimes we coax them to let us fool around a while and they enjoy our fun, too. When someone needs to really concentrate on his or her studies, we excuse them to go out on the steps where it is nice and quite and no one will disturb them. Our session teachers are both new this year but they caught on to us fast. We boast from our class a little talent as well as other things. Wanieta lsaccs sings for the student body as well as anyone else who asks her and she really has a voice everyone would like to have. Pat Crawford and Jean Crook play the piano and sound as good as professionals to us. Now for the beauty of our class. We have two majorettes in the bank and they are really hubba hubba gals. They are Janice Swindlehurst and Ramona Kirn. Beverly Hamilton and Jean Hanifan are cheer leaders and believe us they are always out there cheering for good old C.C'.H.S. And speak of these gals looks-oh boy! 19' EA -5 in -ml' g JOHN GOMEZ EMMA BROWNING BERT CORNU Vice Prcsiclcnt Secretary Tl'l'2lFLll't'l' RCDQKIES WIC started out new in high school last fall without all the bad habits of our olrlcr high school classmates. Mrs. Foster tricxl to start us out on thc right path but we almost drove her crazy because we learnecl the upper- classmen's follies too quickly. Mrs. Foster resigned and Mrs. Sanford took her place and she put us in our places fast. We soon gathered our quota of demerits and were rolling along as if we had always been in high school. The teachers pull their hair out when we comc stomping in and sigh with exhaustion when we stomp out. Golly, we wonder if they think we're awful? Del Steve and Ralph Powell even won Block 'tF's this year and we are really proud of them. Jim Farley was basketball manager and Don Fer- guson football manager. We weren't able to make any Old English F's . but just give us another year. When the time came around for us to give our party we gave a spring dance. With Elaine Teel, our capable president in charge. the school and all the teachers were truly amazed that we could give such a gala affair without anyone else's help. Kenny Rost's band played and our little crooner, Diane O'Meara, sang and made the whole school swoon. We also had one of the best assemblies of the year with Mr. Gray and Mr. Urice as the feature on Truth or Consequences. They were mostly conse- quencies and oh, my what penalties the contestants paid. Some of the frosh girls were lucky to attract the eyes of some senior boys so we know the school really takes notice of us. One of the best yell leaders comes from our class. Jackie has gone to every game and really cheered up the boys. The first sunny Saturday, the upperclassmen took us up to Rattlesnake hill and made us white wash the Fallon F so it would look nice for an- other year. Haven't gone on a diet and haven't quit eating- but still we earned enough money from selling ice cream and hot dogs at the games to buy ourselves some Alpha Lambda pins. We just had to have something more than a bulging figure to prove what we accomplished at our meeting every other Wednesday. Again this year our assembly was placed among the tops. Dressed as old maids, which none of us hope to be, we really gave the students and even the teachers a thousand good belly-laughs, thanks to Dudie Burroughs and Pat Ernst, who wrote the delightful skit. Most of us look forward to our regular meeting, cause then we learn all the latest gossip. We even make up some. to make the story so much more interesting. We guess we've sounded kind of lazy so far but really yve're not! We've packed boxes of medicines and etc., to send to foreign countries and lots of little odd jobs. This year we have had a wonderful time at the informal initiation. We blindfolded each new girl and then gave her the works. t'alt' liver, skinned grapes and ice cold water really brought forth the yells. With our very .helpful advisor. Films of special interest to business students have been shown by Mr. Van Huevelen several times during the year. Anita Mussi is vice-president of this group, Patty Hamilton the treasurer. BUGLE CALL Ilm hm hm, the melody rings in your ears. The glee club hums on and you could sit and listen for hours to the beautiful music they make. You know that song, We Could Make Such Irleautiful Music? Well, they do and it's mighty nice listening. They gave a dance April ll at the Fraternal Hall and it was a wowing suc- cess. Kenny Rost, the boy who can really make music, was the fellow they chose for their music master. 'l'he girls all got up at dawn on Iiaster morning so that they could sing l'oi' the Sunrise Services. Ambitious people they were, but they enjoyed doing it and so did everyone else enjoy having them there. The glee club group as a whole is delightful but there are a few girls who are especially outstanding. Francis Springer and Margaret Soares, sopranos are known the town over. They even have dates with outside organizations. Diane U'Meara, freshman blues singer, sang with Kenny Rost's band for the freshman dance. Honestly, some day our own little Fallon hillbillys might be somebody. Our dear band is llllt only nice looking but we also won second prize i11 the Admission Day parade at Carson City. Pretty good, don't you think? The girls practice faithfully every day and learn such new fascinating tricks that it is a pleasure to sit and watch them not for seconds, not for minutes, but for hours. Mary Getto is not only a good major- ette, but also a neat little seamstress. Right now she and some of the other girls are styling their summer out- fits. You can bet that they will real- ly have style with lots of work and time put in on them. lt's nice to have cute majorettes but when you get some like ours, that can sew and even cook, well-that's really doing well and so we'll just have to agree with Ernie, They're all right. FIELD ARTILLERV 105 PEOPLE attended the annual Father and Sons FFA banquet prepared by the home ec classes. At this dinner, Mr. Lloyd Dowler, state FFA super- visor, commended the Fallon group and their instructor, Mr. Schank, for the fine work accomplished in the past 18 years. In the fall, Charles Miller assisted Mr. Schank as ag instructor. At mid- term, Mr. Miller took over the veteran's ag program, and Mr. Neil Stewart was hired as Mr. Schank's assistant. Mr. Stewart instructs ag 1 and hand- les shop work for the other ag classes. War surplus power tools have in- creased the efficiency ot' the ag shop. 6 Fallon's FFA chapter sent Z7 representatives to the Junior Livestock show in Reno April 20 and 21. The boys all made good profits on the stock they showed. A chicken feeder built by the ag classes brought S79. Two contests among ag members, a home improvement, and a rodent extermination, were run off this spring. Prize for the home improvement winners are ag ,iacketsg for the rodent extermination winners, 85. Regular FFA meetings are held Wednesday session periods. Social meet- ings are held about once a month. The ag boys entertained the home ec girls in the fall at a party and they returned the party this spring. The boys hope to get a truck from army surplus in Oakland. State Farmers from the Fallon group included Pete Mori, Jim Wood, Fred Hicks. Pete Mori was chosen state star farmer. Candidate for the American Farmer Degree is Ralph Bell, now serving in the army. Members of the stock judging team who by winning first in the state meet, earned a trip to Kansas to the national FFA convention next fall are Basil Cislini, Joe Lister, Don Mills and Fred Hicks. Don Mills Won the honor of being top stock judger in the state. First in seed identification was won by a team made up of Roger Mills, John Sharrah, Joe Bell and Cyril Schank. Joe Lister won second place in the state public speaking contest. The Parli- mentary Procedure Team, whose members are Jim Hettinger, Stanley Schank, Jim Wood, Roger M.lls and Don Travis. also won a first place. A sweepstakes cup for high representation in all events was also won by Fallon. Pete Mori won S100 as a state star farmer. Louis Venturacci won S100 for first place in the state farm mechanics contest. Cyril Schank won S100 in a rural elcctrificoton contest and first on his treasurer's books. K. P. AMONG our top features were the Barn Dance and the Sweetheart Dance. The Barn Dance was strictly informal-girls dressed in peasant skirts and blouses and the boys in levi's and cotton shirts. The auditorium was decor- ated haphazardly with saddles, ropes and old lanterns. Light was furnished by some of the lanterns and a few of the stage lights. Refreshments were served barnyard fashion. Reed Robinson and his guitar gave out with one of his humorus backwoods songs. Our traditionally formal Sweetheart Dance was given on April 18. Al- though it is the popular belief that boys detest being invited to anything formal-we showed 'em. Each of us had a man! They didn't even look un- happy! The auditorium was decorated with red and white streamers and gay little cupids. On May 9, we attended a F.H.A. convention held in Gardnerville. One bus was taken and all the girls who would fit, went. Many ot' us modeled our favorite costumes. We really looked slick, One of our home ec classes traded classes with Mr. Schank's ag IV class. We hear that the boys did O.K. We know we did. Our nick-knack shelves and rocking horses show that we too can make use of a saw and hammer. With Mrs. Ryan, our home ec teacher whom all of us girls think is simply super. we have had a perfectly wonderful year. liawl. lion: Nlrs llian, Xlarilvn lb-rryvnizin, l-Idilli Siu-nson. .li-an Ynnlznninulmni, Ircan Yainlrnninzlmni, hl:ll',lnl'5 l',,H.,-. slim, .Ie-an Vro-lk, .Iulia Vasu-y, lair'-I1:i 'Truss'-ll. l'Ill'lIl1ll' Son-ns.-n, In-lx.i Ili-mlrix, lfrancxs 4L..1ngs, 'flu'-gl mm: .Xiai':.i1'el Soar.-s, Sli'-lly llllSllll, 1'lnarloIte liilnlvs, Mary Lon Slim-1-son. We even established a girls' softball team and it' you don't think we're good, then just tell us why the boys always rome out to watch us practice? lt seems that each game finds us right there, cheering the boys on and be- lieve us, our voices just aren't by the time a game is over. The boys tell us that our yelling really does help them, so it' it does-well, we'll be there. We Pep Squadron girls gave a dance at the Artemisia Hall and everybody turned out. They had such a wonderful time that honestly they hated to go home and turn in. When everything comes out in the wash, all of you people realize what a really good time the pep squad has had, and how lucky they were to have an advisor like our cute personality, Jeanne Alexander. Coach Wes Goodner: Assistant Coaches Marion Crawforcl and Paul .lcnfcn CCDMPANV F MEMBERS of Block F are athletes all, but among their group are top honor rule students, student body officers, leaders in FFA and in all school activities. Leader is Fred Hicks, who lettered in football and track. Sec- retary and treasurer is Don Fister, who lettered in football, basketball and boxing. Sergenat at arms is Dave Windy Howard who lettered in foot- ball and basketball. Directing this top group is Coach Wes Goodner. These boys have made their organization rank highest in the school in finances. The money was earned in last year's fights, and in the one fight held so far this year. They have bought football uniforms and are going to order new basketball uniforms for next year's team. This year's A squad uniforms will be given to the B squad. The block F group each year gives a party for the school to thank the student body for their support at athletic contests. Last year's party was the season's best, and his year's hop promises to be even better. Block F members meet Monday session periods to plan their activities, mainly projects to improve the school athletic setup. Un Iho- It-thu I'hirlI Row: ,, .. lllll lxtstlt-r l x in lint ltl 'l'lllS year, Block F members got together to give their coach a surprise party on his twenty-seventh birthday. After eating their fill of ice cream and birthday cake, the fellows presented coach with a fine bamboo fishing rod, which he promised to lend to any Block F man on any except school days. Another of the Block F men's projects was to sponsor an inter-class track meet in which the seniors came out on top. All boys on the winning team will have their names placed on a cup to be bought by the Block F. Block F had taken a slump before Coach Goodner and his men took control and en- gineered it back to its rightful place as a leading club in the school. Supervisor is Wes Goodner, head coach. From material in the club he has formed the teams that represent Churchill County High School on the foot- ball field, on the basketball floor, on the track, and in the boxing ring. Main purpose of the club is to produce leaders for the school as well as for the Block F. The lettermen's clubs all over the United States possess the leaders and leadership of their schools because the best of America's youth possess the qualities of good sportsmen and the love of good, clean competition which improves our American way of life. Ours is a better school for having a Block F organization, and our members are better men for having belonged to such a group. -: lloli Nlllano, tit-no Storm- :intl t'o:tclt XYvs tihootlnt-r. linvk Row: IH-to Mori, llzisil Vislini. llzurrt-3' lanuon. l':trl .lolnnsolt, llolmutl Smith. WAR CCDIQRESPGNDENTH READING and writing and playing-that's this year's Highview staff- and if you don't believe it, well just ask Miss Gibbs, she knows. Don and Betty flirt, just a little, not enough to notice, Windy day dreams, Galen just piddles, Colleen and Ruby have a little misunderstanding, Evelyn just listens, ahem, and while all this is going on Delores and Theo Ann discuss the night before ? ? But all in all, it is a very busy class and they do get their work done. In fact I can't remember when they haven't met a deadline. Once every two weeks they put out a paper that the students really go for! Some of the other classes seem almost jealous of this happy family and we can't say that we blame them. It makes it very nice this year for us to get the last minute news because you see the outstanding boys in sports are the very boys who belong to this little class and who write the most interesting stories ever published in the city of Fallon. The girls write the social stuff, you know, who have the latest thing in fashions, etc. That also keeps up morale or something! I often wondered why Miss Gibbs didn't have grayer hair, or should I say snow white 1' Her English classes are bad enough, but when it comes to a journalism class that wants to play all the time, well the only thing there is left to do is let them play, I guess, especially when they do a good job like the one this year has. Nobody feels sorry for us because no one but us realizes what a tough job we have. At the beginning of the year we start in with pictures for an early annual. Somewhere along the way we got stalled and if it hadn't been for the won- derful help of Mr. Jurgens, we wonder what the annual would have been. Mrs. Foster, too, has been priceless. Without her taking the individuals and group shots, we would have been lost. Betty Erb and her pals chased ads for months. Then we had to go ped- dling annuals. The deadline was April 1, but April 9 came along and we were still on copy. Don't get us wrong, we loved our job, and we did our best to make it a good book. JUST two little letters that mean so much to the kids of CCHS. Everyday, no matter what time, you would always find some hungry 'teen ager at the Sugar Howl guzzling a soda or putting away a nice juicy banana split. The l'.X. is a place to go and relax and fill yourself with all the ice cream delacacies and candies you have been thinking about all day while try- ing to make the teachers believe your mind is on chemistry or physics or typing-but actually you're sweating it out until school is over and you can hurry to your favorite fountain. It's a place to congregate with all the kids after school and talk over what's cookin' for tonight-find out who has a date, who has been two-timed, how old the new girl is, and will the test tomorrow be too tough. Right now the hangout is the Dew Drop Inn. It's close to school and handy for anyone who wants to make a short visit without being missed too much. After games it is almost impossible to get inside our favorite haunts. There is always cheery laughter, kids pushing, boys trying to hang on to their dates-but it's fun!! Looks like Betty is keep- t ing Don waiting again. At any rate Windy looks contented. He probably just devoured a double banana split! On the ground Fallon stop- ped Sparks dead, but a few passes gave them the points that they needed. For once the score didn't tell the tale. The score was 21-6 in one of the season's most thrilling games. The Greenwave avenged themselves for the embarrassing licking that Stewart gave the Fallon boys at Stewart last year. Stewart was led by two fine backfield men. Jim Thorpe and Joey ICvans. Hard blocking and tackling made-this a good game for the spectators. The out come of this ordeal was a 12-0 victory for the Greenwave. When Fallon went to Reno they were primed by their fairly successful season to make the mighty huskies bow to the will to win. The Greenwave also outgained and outplayed these boys but were victims of a one point' loss. The failure of this point gave Reno an edge that held throughout the entire game. The tragic end gave Reno a chance to play for the conference championship instead of Fallon. The final score was 6-7. The last game is one of the most important to a team because usually there are a certain number of the boys who are graduating and this is their last high school game and they would like to end it with that pleasant taste of victory in the mouth and memories. Fallon's last game with Yer- ington was here at home. The Greenwave defeated them 27-0 with all the boys getting in some time. . High point men were Galen Evans with 132, followed by Don Fister with 120 and Holi Milano with 96. Showing most improvement was Milano, who came in with no exper- ience and worked his way up to one of the standouts. Fallon looked rather rough in the first game of the year at Carson. Final score was 23 217 in favor of Carson. The victory over the Fallon legion team 31-34 gave the Fallon lmoys confidence in themselves. Fallon won its first conference game with Sparks 33--235 here. INVASION THE 1947 track team got off to a fine start by winning the first meet, a four cornered contest, at Yerington, April 12. The three upper classmen chose contestants from the fresh- man class to make a three-cornered meet. The winning class will have its name engraved on a track cup to be presented to the high school by the Block F. Track practice is held during the P. E. classes and the eighth period Fallon has two boys, Warren Hmm, state mile champ, and Mick Melendy, who placed in the pole vault, who were winners in last year's state meet. Prior to the state event, Fallon will participate in several invitational meets where they will gain experience in the heat of battle. As the annual goes to press, Block F members are hoping the Fallon track will be in shape so that the state meet can be held here. Back Row: Fred Hicks. Jim Woods, Bob Hettinger. I didn't exactly laugh but I thought that this year we would have a pretty good sized staff and that so many of the things that had been so difficult last year would be a lot easier this year. That is just exactly where I got fooled! First of all we didn't have any staff. Don, Margaret, Betty, Windy, Galen, Nadine and Jeannette IW . were it! Don wrote the sports, Galen helped line up the sports pages, Na- , dine straightened out the individ- uals and Jeannette helped me in everything from writing copy to drawing the complete dummy of the annual. Margaret helped Mr. Jur- gens with the pictures. I don't know what the annual would have been without the help of Mr. Jurgens. Probably it wouldn't have! Mrs. Fos- ter too, was a wonderful help taking the individuals and Coming down to take odd shots whenever we needed her. The two Betty's chased ads and they really did a splendid job. While all this was going on our advisor, Anne Gibbs, was always beside us helping us over the rough spots and adding new ideas that cheered us up when we felt as if we'd never get through with our work. I want to thank Bob Sanford, editor of the Eagle too, for his invaluable help and time he put in on this book to make it a little different from every other book. I want to thank all the advertisers for their splendid cooperation, for without them the book would never have been published. PAT 'CONI.AN.
