Alpha lambda, we re told is an honorary English organivation, but if anybody had asked us. we d say it was a group of gay ladies who met twice each month to eat The meetings we are sorry to say tend morc toward food than toward literary works. The traditional Alpha Lambda Thanksgiving progressive dinner and the Christmas dance were high lights of the first semester activities with Dorothea Cress in charge. Sec- ond semester, with Emma Lu Winder presiding, the girls entertained their new members at a formal dinner. Next, they held a bean feed to devour the beans from the bean jar on which we all bought tickets. Then, their consciences bothering, they entertained their mothers at a breakfast. In between times, they just met for simple little suppers. To the rest of us it seems strange that all Alpha Lambda mothers are wonderful, generous cooks who delight in feeding their daughters' smart little friends. Maybe there is something in this business of getting A credits. Although the band started the year with only twenty-seven members, three majorettes, and no drum major, by the first of May, it had reached a membership of forty- six, plus seven majorettes and a drum major. In addition to this, three members moved from Fallon and one left school for matrimony. This public spirited organization played for all football games but one, all but two basketball games, for the VFW parade, for all school music concerts, and presented one concert in the city park. Included in the band are fourteen clarinets, eight cornets, three alto saxophones, four alto horns, three flutes, two tubas, five percussion instru- ments, three trombones, one oboe, one baritone saxophone, one glocken- spiel, one bass viol. Colleen Moore was named drum major. J. S. Telecky is the band's director. Practices are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9:40 to 10:20. za 6 cz oiaffsa I xelxone looks iClIH111I11.flX xt tha h1g.h sehool band wx hen It IJClf01mS but soonem Ol later all eves 3, ue only at thou dttmetxxe gnls wlth the short xknts .md lXXlll1INlg bdtons At mul tum ilu new rndlolettex wele . lclul to the j.Z'lClUIJ and we nom see one mauorette Ill flont oi each eolumn ol the band 'Ihe new gnls me Nolmd 'Vloultlle Colleen Barton Barbala l lXl0l Fmncu 3111 1111.291 and Iledn Xdnldnlnghfxm The three xetemns .um Colleen Home btelld Rxttl and Ballmm Nldson Colleen hae been Lhoxen dx um I'Y1dI0l and Barbara and Stella hem ehlef ma1o1 ettex The 5,1ls haue pmetleed dlllgentlx and hdxe tlfuned lllllll N11 Teleckx l llbll 1 lVl1s 1 Ste ll Rxttl Colleen Morne W? ' ' l'1'1', 7 5 Qqidgiifid Although the high school orchestras have been gradually disappearing in this state during the past several years, our high school still has its organization of forty-one members. This membership is known to be one of the largest, if not the largest, in the state. Our orchestra is very good, particularly when one considers that most of the members began their music career after they came to high school. An orchestra takes a long time to develop. It must always play classical music, the most difficult kind of music to play. Given a rating of excellent at the spring concert, the orchestra has given generously of its time during the school year. It played at all high school concerts, including the Thanksgiving program, the Christmas pro- gram, the spring concert, and it will play for graduation. Making up the orchestra are fifteen violins, th1'ee trumpets, four clarinets, two alto horns, one trombone, one baritone saxophone, one tym- pani, two violas, three cellos. two bass viols, three flutes, one tuba, one drum, one piano, and one piano-accordian. Orchestra members hold two regular rehearsals each week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Members attend practices during the day. Director is J. S. Telecky, his assistant Miss Helen Hoover. The orchestra has brought much pleasure to students and to townspeople this year. ?f 55 9555 Only seven veterans showed up for the first practice ot' this year's girls' glee club. Somehow word got out to the Freshmen that this was a group worth joining. and within the week fifteen of Mrs. Sawyer's charges had been selected by Mr. Telecky to ,iofn the singers. Only one of the twenty-two members is a senior, six are sophomores and juniors. Because the group had to start practically from scratch, it developed slowly, but by the time ot' the spring concert, it was good enough to win a rating ot' excellent. VVith one or two additions next fall, it should be one of the best glee clubs the school has had for many years. In developing the girls' glee club, Miss Helen llooyer, assfstant music director, has been a Very great help. Dressed in becoming formals, the glee club members look so pretty and lighthearted when they make a public appearance it's hard to remem- ber the hours of work, hard work, that went into perfecting the Chorus. Vile who have heard them know the hours of precious noon-hour and session period time that went into making the singers the linshed group they are today. Catherine Lancaster, Margaret Gibbs. Standing: Donna Karren, Jean Rost, Bill Bright, Perhaps because they know they are going into a world that is neither bright nor carefree. the seniors this year have been willing to sit and take life easy and let the rest of the school worry about unimportant details. They were making plans for their Sadie Hawkins dance as the 1945 Lahontan went to press. Although hampered by the lack of sugar for the cakes they want to serve and by the shortage of lumber for proposed Skunk Hollow cottages, the seniors assured us their hop would top even the Frosh party. Quiet, genial Charlie York has been session room teacher for the graduates. Although he's had some difficulty in selling stamps and bonds, he's always finally won 100 per cent cooperation from all the 1945 seniors. 194 Q05 . . Jean was awarded second place in the state contest. Chosen most likely to succeed and to represent the class of 1945 in the Pepsi-Cola scholarship contest are Tomio Ito, Bill Stuart and Bill Sanford. Melvin Springer, Bill Stuart, John Paul, Colleen Moore, Jean Rost and Carmen Erquiaga have applied for the freshmen scholarships awarded by the University of Nevada. Several members of the class took the tests for the opportunities offered by thc Army Spzcfalized Training program. 2552 ., ,ff X, lg Dolores Cislini Beriiadine Corlett Dorothea Cross Bob Curry E' l 6.25 Carl Davis Floyd Davis Carmen Erqui Francis Farley Elma Faupel Wilma Faupel A small percent of the members of our class who entered high school in the fall of 1941 and in January, 1942 are graduating with us. Many of the boys have entered the armed services, many of the girls have married, and a few students have moved. Bob Johnson finished high school at mid- term, as did Willa Hettinger. Harry Pardick went to the army while he was our class president last year. Members of our last year's junior class now in the service are: Reno Ratti, John Robertson, Albert Madsen. Many of the members of the class will enter the armed services in June. Several boys, who will not be 18 for another year, plan to work in a year's university before Uncle Sam sends them a summons. aga snio 'zz Erncst Ferguson Willa Hettinger 1 Ed Gomes Thelma Hicks 51250 'zz Q CV., .gk , Lloyd Hittlc Takuko Ito Tomio Ito Raymond Jesch Ralph Bell was chosen by Block F men as the outstanding athlete in the class of '45 and his name will be added to the plaque presented by the class of '44. Other athletes who will be missed next year include Bob Curry, Carl Davis, Francis Farley, Lloyd Hittle, Melvin Springer, Bill Stuart, Rollie Weaver and Tom Weaver. The seniors helped make up the fine 1944 football team and have several men who will do well in the track meets this spring. These athletes have work- ed under Coaches George Norwood, Wes Goodner and Charlie York. As leaders, the senior athletes have set an enviable record for their good-sportman- ship, In years to come, high school teams will try to live up to the high standards of sportsmanship, winning or losing, establish- efl by the class of '45, f 'QU' Donna Karren Haru Kilo Dorothy Manchestei Gerald Marker Kenneth Marker Etta Mae Mickelson A A Colleen Moore Oliver Ott John Paul Jean Rust. Bill Sanford Bill Sherman Several seniors have made enviable scholastic records, and competition for the high boy and girl will be close. Leona Briggs, Dorothea Cress, Carmen Erquiaga, Colleen Moore, Jean Rost, Claudia Trussell, Emma Winder, John Paul and Bill Stuart have made good scholastic records. Although it is al- ways assumed that seniors will be graduated, the Civics grades of several seniors were very shakey in mid-April. Because so many excellent scholarships are available this year, seniors who failed to burn the midnight oil along the way are advising underclassmen that grades do pay. Alpha Lambda membership will be hard hit by the graduation of seven members. 5125011 Johnny Souza Lucille Spendlove Melvin Springer William Stuart EIZLO 'Zi Members of the gladuatlng class wlll make then own graduation speeehee on Lountlles of the wolld Taklng part wlll be Jean Rost John Iaul Bob Qlllly Colleen NIOOIE Blll Bllght Margaret Abel and If mma I u Wlndel Haru Klt0 w lll slng Plans f0l senlol cut day haxe not yet been made aS the gasollne sholtage checks the best plans I lst we lltdlll was some talk of a flshlng tl ID to Reese Rn el The class of 1045 has made hlstory and It has lly ed hlstoly They w ere ln hlgh school when the student body gatheled to heal LEWIS Sutton Ruby Tl IXIS Glace Testolln Cl ludla Tlussell Plesldent Roosex elt declare wal on the Axls they wele ln hlgh school when SllDCllIlf9I'lCl ent Johnson called the student body together to announce the death of Plesldent Roose ye l Marquellte Walkel Rollle Weax CI Tom Weaxel Emma Wmdel Mlldled Ycoman Ruth Plerce, low QQDIOI fl ll JUNIOR OFFICERS Bllly Engebretson plesldent Nfllfnl Sh nkey tleweulel Flossle Cl lham 'lnnual leplesentltlye Eleunol Almas xlcc DICS1ClLIlt NOIITII Bonuccelll secletlly LLIZLO 'Zi The new upperclassmcn stalted the yeal ott llght bv gettlng ILIYUOIS elected to flxc of SIX student body Off1C6S Oul candlclates amazed eyen themselx es w lth the exe llent campalgn talks they made The IUHIOIS also showed thcn good Illllgmt nt by electing f0l class offlcels Plesldcnt Blll Ifngebletson xlce plesldent Eleanol Almls secletaly Nolma Bonuccelll Thell OfflL6lS leally cllcked and to DIOXQ lt shortly aftel taklng Off1CQ thcy put on an assembly whlch was eally enloy ed by the student body Th10LIf2,'l'l0LIt the yeal the other classes put on then paltles whlle the ILIHIOIS watched clltleallx fl om the SICIQIIIICS looltlng f01 911018 w hlch they could collect IH thcll blg aftall of the yen The JUHIOI Senlol Ban quet and Prom lVlay 19 was the date set by the class fol the paltx QDOHSOI s C110 Wllss Hattle Blow ll, MISS Iflances Waltz and Geolgc Ielgens. Not content with the good assembly they put on early in the fall, the sophomores were hosts at a second assembly where they influenced Mr. Telecky to play his saxophone. As active in all school activities as they are in Mrs. Wallace's session, the sophs are already making a bid for next year's top student body offices. Fallon won dye games, lost two, and tied one. The Greenwave opened the grid season with a practice game against Reno Oct., 7. Reno and Fallon battled to a scoreless tie on the Fallon field. The Greenwave eleven won their first conference game on October 14 when they defeated Carson 28 to 0 on the home field. The Senators put up plenty of fight but failed to penetrate the strong Fallon line. The outstanding run of the game was a 70-yard punt return by Geno Steve. Farley, Bell and Steve played outstanding ball for the Greenwave . Fallon took their first defeat from the Sparks eleven October 21 on the Railroader's field. One touchdown was all that was made by the Sparks team but Fallon failed to score. Sparks made their six points on a Fallon blocked punt. Vodnick picked up the ball and dashed 235 yards around end to set Sparks up for a touchdown. The Fallon line held for three plays, but Baker finally pushed the ball over. Playing Stewart on the local field October 28, Fallon made their second victory by a score of 13-O. Bell opened up the holes and Rollie Weaver carried the ball to put Fallon back into the win column. Robertson and Swindlehurst played good games on the line for Fallon. The Reno Huskies knocked local gridders out of the running for zone championship by trimming Fallon 14-0 on the Reno fielrl November 4. Fallon attempted many times to score but each time the Greenwave would be held FOOTBALL CAPTAINS: Geno Steve, Ralph Bell TWO COACHES: Charlie York, Lloyd White for downs or forced to punt. Carr and Bell played well for the Greenwave. Playing their toughest game of the season November 11. Coach Charles York's fighting football team tamed down the Lovelock Mustangs to the tune of 6-0. Loyelock had been unde- feated until that time and was highly favored to win the zone championship. November 18 Fallon swamped Yerington 64-0. Yerington never threat- ened to score. Fallon played their final grid game with Gardnerville November 25 when they trimmed the Tigers 20 to 0. Fallon wound up the season by elegting Ralph Bell and Geno Steve co- captains of the 1944 squad. Bell and Swindlehurst were also named on All- State teams.
