For who wouldn't get married if she could escape the worries and cares of teaching some students? Helen Coverston Boldra spent ten and one-half years teaching English and Spanish in Fallon high school. During that time, she was interested in all high school activities, and was advisor of Al- pha Lambda for five years. Often her stories of her excursions through many of the Unit- ed States and of her trip to Mexico have been the source of inter- est to her students. Her collections of Mexican blankets, dolls and literature have made her Spanish classes alive. Last year, for the Junior-Senior banquet, Mrs. Boldra loaned to the students her Mexican robes and pottery for decoration. Mrs. Boldra accompanied the Alpha Lambda girls to Las Veg- as in 1939. She helped reorganize the society in 1937, and had been their advisor since then. She was on call at practically all times, and was a boon to the girls in her capacity of solving perplexing problems. Under her capable hand, food sales paid, dances were a success, and the annual Alpha Lambda picnic became something to look forward to. Of her the girls said, She's a perfect chaperone- only we never think of her as being that. Alpha Lambda members complain that Lowran Boldra stepped into the picture and snatched Helen, as they all call her, away before they knew what was happening. That the high school paper was solely Mrs. Bol- dra's job is proven by the fact that when she left, so did the paper. A graduate of Fallon high school and of the University of Nevada, Mrs. Boldra has always seemed an integral part of the school. She was one of us. Always active in the Baptist church and in lodge and civic work, somehow she always found time to make us feel that school came first. Primarily interested in literature, Mrs. Boldra has almost completed work for her master's degree from Boulder. Her scrap book hobbies have al- ways interested her students. An attitude of good sportsmanship and a show of good, common sense, combined with an enjoyable sense of humor, runs through all the things she has ever done. -5- Ha Ffy Weaver XXXGITGYI WOOANVG I' Loring Board fxxcmlvcr ,ilu gBH2llIUI'iZI1lI at We got up early io catch the season s one snow fall as xt enhanced the beauty of the hxgh school if K cf qfmnfai If We take a personal interest ln Art's flowers every fall smce our dement labor helps spade the ground 7 -.,..,,,.,Q ' A , N--MM ' 1 1'-A-M-... i 'D gjln ' 1 H V , A., ,na - - p 'I Kg. a , 7, .'g,,, ' 1 , p I if!-z , . Briant An old Alpha Lambda member tried to tell lily people that the pretty, peppy gals rooting for the Fallon team at the state tournament were members of an honorary Eng- lish society. The Ely people laughed-they thought they knew honor students didn't get around like that. And that's where they we1'e wrong-the most active girls in the high school belong to Alpha Lambda. Didn't they do what everybody said was impossible-go to the Vegas game? And in spite ot' snow and little money. didn't they get to the lily tournament '? Driving force ot' Alpha l.amb- da for the past five years has been Helen Coverston Bol- rira. When she left at midyear, liois Hutchinson took over the sponsorship of the group. The group made its public appearance for the vear when members held a silver tea at the Artemisia hall to laise money for the Ely jaunt. Townspeople enjoyed dig- ging into their pockets, they said. The girls said Good- bye to Helen Coverston at a kitchen shower and tea at Anne Gibbs' home. Without Mr. Weede's efficient helpers, civ- ics assignments would never be completed, English themes would be forever incomplete. and, most serious of all, Romance would no longer bloom in Churchill county high school. We're pretty sure faculty members don't read the annual, so we're safe in explaining that librarians act as postoffice and mail car- rier for students parted in study hall for for- ty long minutes. When one can't get his al- gebra, he can usually signal for one of his more intelligent friends to meet him at the library. And while the students diligently labor over the problem. the trusty librarians pretend to be hunting books. The teacher sel- dom tumbles. When some hardy soul rolls a marble down the aisle. the librarian always looks the other way. She never sees anything she shouldn't. We don't know whether to thank Mr. Weede or his staff for the truly good new li- brary books we've found this year. All we can say is. Northwest Passage is as divert- ing as a funny book any day, and why can't we have more new books and have them 1 for . Weede hun hike no andrxggrv book' .QW YDS 3 lost I V -K., more often? We appreciate the current magazines Mr. Weede's librarians dish out to us. Some- times we get tired of waiting for our turn to read Readers Digest and Time and we think we might use student funds for a few more subscriptions. We don't hold the de- linquent list against the librarians-and we admit they do all they can to help us out of that serious problem. It gives us a good, safe feeling to find two brave males in this year's library lineup. In addition to being efficient librarians, Ted and Jack keep Mr. Weede from feeling too lost in library meetings. It seems before their advent the ladies at times overrode Mr. Weede's firm decisions as to how to check up on books. Chief assistant to Mr. Weede is Yoshiko Ito, whose good disposition never alters, no matter how many students yell for service after school. All in all, the librarians work hard. and don't even get a chance to pay. for a letter for their trouble. ..26- 'F' JA EIZQLLUZE Fo celclnate its thncl bnthday thc Pep bquad put on the bcst asscmbly IH October the student body had seen ln many a Fuday In fact d we hlte to sax It t s good the ganff lust sat back and baslwfl IH lts gloly fol the l6I'lld1llCl91 of the yeal Part ot the Pep Squad s yacatlon lesulted ot couvse hom Presldent Bell s D0l1LX of RDPOIHTIHJ, each class and each g'10UD ln thc hlgh school to be responslble fol onc pcp plosnam CIUIIHQ thc school X631 On the membexshlp l1st of thls g1oup IN found a laxge pelcentage ofthe school s talent at least a lalge pe1 centagc of the unea1thecl talent That 1ts membels ale school lcade1s eafh one of whom IN busy IH many an dCtlXllY accounts fo1 the dlftlculty of gettlng them all lnto the study hall at the same tlme fOl a meetlng And when ten Ol twelye I'I16H'lb91s do get together so many good ldeas ale yolced membels cant tell lust w hose Sllg'Q,QStl0!l to follow Ifarly IH the fnst telm an unsuccessful Lttempt was made by the Qloup to fllld a fa ulty membel wlth a stlong alm and a faclle wlt to sponsol them Membels lntlmlclatecl h the sald What we want IN some blg guy to make thcm klds be st1ll n pedagogucs w en y mcctlngs lNlI1f:'t89Il folty two ls gomg, o cnlaxge ITlLIT'lb9lNhlIJ defmc lesponslbxlltw of each membel to flnd a hand Willklllg' sponsm buch a gnoul wlth l1ye wne leplesentatlyes flOm each class w1ll do 1 lot towald Clfldtlllg, t l ff between classes one of L001J6ldtl0l1 11the1 than com school spnlt towald makmg ee ml., Ard so oul hats alc off to Pep Squad membels and then plans tol mal11nff1fl47 Fallon hlch s best Veal f t be the Iep Squads yeal Pl ms axc alxeady afoot to petltlon 21 1 ' ' -1. .If , I ,Q x P A 1 - ' - ' . f we.. When they came tripping home from the festival with a one rating tucked into their pock- ets, we realized they must be good. With twenty-eight voices of good, wholesome quality, they really make the music colors blend. We must know, however, that before a glee club becomes good enough to rate one it goes through innumerable stages that aren't good. The girls labored on songs to make them sound unlabored, they worked on passages to make them sound light and carefree. But this year's practice has not gone unrewarded, for we have a club that's fit to be tied. Mr. Telecky was ambitious for the girls. and the girls were ambitious for themselves, so among the thirty of them- we include the pianist-they aimed high, and got what they aimed at. Dressed in Fallon High green flannel skirts, white blouses and white Oxfords, the group has excellent stage presence-so say the critics. A part of their charm is certain- ly due to their naturalness. We've often wondered when these girls eat, as they practice noons from twelve un- til-until they've perfected whatever song they're working on. Amazing as it seems, during this practice time these giggling girls do not giggle-they don't even look happy. They work. There are no cuts and very few absences from practice. We can't mention the glee club without thinking of their ever faithful pianist, Jean Bailey. She never fails. We can remember-even in the brief span of our own high school life--when the girls' glee club consisted of a dozen or so girls who sang for graduation, and then were silent for another year. This year's energetic, successful crew spells progress. -gg- 'ZL 2 .S 'ZLO 1 11 1 111 N N . . Metcalf, adjudicator of the music festival, chose the best music groups in the contest, he asked the Fallon band to play a march. What better proof could we give of the excellence of Dalei- den's band? The reason for this excellence? En- thusiastic students, spurred on by parents T and Arnold Daleiden, came to high school last summer for extra practice. Concerts in the park gave experienced musicians practice and beginners a chance to catch up. When school started, the band organized itself into a workable unit, electing Irene Saval president, Lee Boulding, vice president, Mary Philips, secretary and treasurer, Aleita Inman, librari- an, Calvin Covell, uniform custodian, and Warren Hursh, drum maior. B'ZCLlAIl2-- Though not wholly successful, the 1940 football season was one of the most outstanding in recent years. Starting with a mere handful of experi- enced material, the Green squad showed steady improvement through a grinding season and wound up with flying colors. The season was climaxed with a victory over Reno. who had not been beaten by a high school team in more than three years and was undefeated this season in six previous games. This was also Fallon's first victory over Reno in the last nine con- tests between these two rivals. The only teams to defeat Ballon by sizeable scores, Sparks and Stewart, met in a post-season game for the state cham- pionship. At the beginning of the season. Coach Falgren and his new assistants, Arnold Yan Heuvelen and Harry Shierson. started with the greenest ma- terial in Fallon in many years. Led by co--captains Bell and Maffi, however. the squazl worked hard and developed into a well rounded out group. 1,-U3 1:-111 I:.1v,.-1-N, 111111111-1'l..11-k. l:1'lllXN. Al- though these vacancies were hard to fill, the players never lost faith and near the end of the season were again showing a lot of promise. The majority of the letter men were Sophomores and Juniors, and of twenty letters awarded, fifteen went to boys who will be wearing the Green and White next year. The center of the line will be manned by John Waller and Roy Smales, who were interchanged by Coach Falgren on defense and offense. Tom Jolly, a Freshman. also showed up well at this post. The blocking of the guards, Amilio Bell, Piercy Holliday, Lowell Miller and Wel- burn Hall, combining with quarterbacks Bud Bowers and Kenneth Homer, was a constant source of trouble to opposition. The tackle berths were taken care of by Ver! Hendrix, Bob Alworth, and Two-Ton Hicks. At ends, the work of Don Chapman, Alton Borlen, Beryl Boilen and Charlie Alworth was very outstanding. The back field. with the conception and speedy running of Earl Deputy, Alvin Groth and Bev Waller, the plunging of fullbacks Steph- en Maffi and Louie Mori. and the previously mentioned blocking of the quarterbacks, Bowers and llolmer, made a Notre Dame offense, and a neat spectacle to watch. Boys who were given consideration in the mentioning of outstanding players in the state and conference were Bev Waller and Steph- en lVlaffi as backs, Chapman, Bell and Hicks as linemen. Though they didn't appear in games with the regular team, the young- er members of the squad showed promise of developing into valuable mater- ial for next year. Trainers Ed Warman, Carroll Prouty and Fred Anderson should be complimented very highly for their loyal and untiring services to the team and the student body. Analyzing the football year of 1940 and looking forward to 1941, we all wish to thank the boys for their splendid efforts. lliglil: Sleplu-in Nl:1I'I'i. l'l1lllmcIi. lim-lim, lcfl In riulxti lion 4'ln:ipm:uu. 1-ml: 'Foul Jolly, center: Alvin iirollu, lmlllmclag X1-rl lleuilrix. Im-lilc. aczioizl The highlight of the year, the second Reno game, is worthy of detailed description. In this contest the Green Wave was minus the services of their star tackle, Verl Hendrix, who was attending the national F. F. A. conven- tion in Kansas City. The final score was 12 to 6 for Fallon. Due to Reno's impressive record, Fallon was decidedly the underdog. The Green Wave de- cisively outplayed the Huskies through the first three quarters and at the end of the game again held the upper hand. First downs, by sixteen to four, were heavily in favor of the Green Wave, who also piled up considerable advantage on running plays. Charlie Alworth came through, outkicking Baker of Reno iheralded as the best in the statey to give Fallon the ad- vantage in this department of play. Mixing up laterals, end runs and occa- sional plays through the line, Fallon drove across the field to score in the first quarter. In the third period Fallon's laterals again clicked, bewilder- ing the Huskies, and paving the way for the second Green Wave touch- down. Reno's single tally came in the middle of the final quarter when they completed several long passes. This victory was the highlight of the high school athletic careers of all the boys on the squad, ri' SEASON'S RECORD - 19-10 Fallon 0, Westwood 13, at Fallon Fallon 6, Carson 26, at Fallon Fallon 7, Susanville 6, at Susanville Fallon 0, Stewart 34, at Stewart Fallon 0, Reno 6, at Fallon Fallon 21, Yerington 6, at Fallon Fallon 0, Sparks 39, at Sparks Fallon 12, Reno 6, at Reno Fallon 7. L A likely looking bunch, the Green Wave, all lined up for practice scrimmage. At the start of the season the Green Wave symbolized their name in color by appearing in flashing new green and white suits. The new green pants and white jerseys with green trim added much to the glamour of the game. This colorful array attracted much comment and the refreshing colors proved a considerable boost to the morale of the team. Coach Falgren also purchased for the team the best type of shoulder pads and hip pads and added several new white helmets. A peep into the well organized practice sessions would find the boys drilling intensively on plays and timing rather than the hard scrimmages which featured the process of conditioning in bygone years. Heavy practice under Falgren was limited to early in the week. Work on the dummies was not only one of the fundamental processes, but the boys enjoyed this, as everything was on a competitive basis. With the wealth of experienced material returning, the vision of an- other cup in the trophy case at the end of next season should not seem too fantastic. To Coaches Falgren, who will not be with us next year, Shierson and Van Heuvelen, we again express our sincere appreciation for their many hours of hard work, and give them all the credit possible for the fine showing of the team. It was through the efforts of these men and the co- operation of the entire squad that Fallon not only developed into a fine team. but that the boys were looked upon as one of the outstanding teams in regard to sportsmanship. llvl' ll'llill'llliI Ronin-Ili ll-vm:-I i11:il'lvl'h:u4li: lnvwvll Miller, guzirnlg 1'lmrl.-s Alworlh. end. Miss Stella Larson, their coach. regrets that they did not make out their schedule earlier in order to have been able to play more games. Miss Larson hopes to make out her schedule in October next year. December 20 found the Fallon girls playing Hawthorne, anxious to uphold the reputation Fallon teams had made in past years. Playing an exciting game, the Fallon girls walked off with their first victory, 35-10. An enthusiastic group of gals defeated Fernley 42-14 here on January 17. Determined to live up to their first two wins, Fallon went to Gardneryille on January 18, all set to beat their most bitter rivals. Maybe they tried too hard. At any rate the Douglas team defeated them 19-15 in an excellent game. - Making a good comeback, the Fallon girls defeated Wadsworth 238-22 on January 31, on the home court. February 1 found the girls staging a losing battle-and we do mean battle- against Austin on the Austin floor. Final whistle found Miss l.arson's team weary and defeat- ed, 26-19. On February 7, the Austin girls came to Fallon and staged another flood game, de- feating the determined Green Wave 25-21. The party held for both teams after the game by the Home Ee girls made defeat almost forgotten. Play- ing improved but unsteady hall, Fallon led hy one point at first quarter, and by half time led 20-14. Mills and Groth were high, -' with ten points each. Fallon got their first test of the season in a tough game with Sparks here January 11. Behind 133-10 at the half, Fallon staged a wild scoring spree in the third quarter, making sixteen points without letting Sparks make a point. Thirty-one to 233 was the final count. with Maffi high man with 1-1 points. A four-point lead at the end of the first quarter proved to he the de- ciding margin in the fourth game of the year when Stewart Indians de- feated Fallon here 210-26 on January 17. Stewart's tight defense enabled them to take their early lead, though they were ahead hy only one point at the half. Fallon tied the score at 22-22 at the end of the third quarter, hut Stewart pulletl ahead again in the last five minutes. Groth was the high scorer with twelve points. ln their first game of the season played away from home, on Janu- ary 18, Fallon downed a determined Gardnerville team 18-17. Fallon en- joyed a 1-I--'1 lead at the half, but was ahle to make only two points in each of the last periods, in both of which the Tigers came hack strong. Casey, who led the Fallon attack with six points. was star of the game. With less than a minute to go. he sank a field goal to luring Fallon from behind to the one-point lead which won the game. The Green Wave took their worst heating of the year when Carson City invaded Fallon on January 24. The final score was 44-16. The deadly accuracy of the Senators' long shots rendered the Fallon zone defense useless. The visitors took the lead at the start and held it throughout the game. The half-time score was 21-8 for Carson. I,ongwill captured Fallon scoring honors with five points. Following the Parson defeat. Fallon went to Lovelock on January 25 and received another setback. Although members of the HB squad did not win any games, they showed remarkable improvement during the year. Playing seven conference games, the second squad practiced faithfully all season. Coach Van Heuvelen confidently expects to see his B team boys on the first string lineup next year. He thinks several of his group are fine players, and that they may be All-State before they check in their suits for the last time. The team played during the season, two games with Sparks, two with Stewart, two with Carson. and one with Fernley. Almost as fast as C squad Coach Paul Jensen develops players, they are snatched for the A and B teams. Boys on the third string this year were mostly beginners in basket- ball. Coach Jensen taught them fundamentals, then all the fancy plays that have to do with developing basketball stars. This year the group did not play out of town teams. but divided up into the Gas House Gang and the Rinky Dinks. and played against each other. Coaches Fal- gren and Van Heuvelen participated with Jensen in analyzing the boys when they played their Friday night tournament games. Badly handicapped by lack of gym space, the B and C squads had to divide practice periods with the A squad, the girls. and the town team. Forgetting such minor details as inconvenient practice hours and no hot water for showers, the boys made an excellent rc:or.1. -45- A Q BOYS' li hQl'. ll Sllllllf' Law- Itolllnll 1 W U2 ET In splte of measles and heat Fallon came IH auth ln the state mtelscholastlc tlack meet held 1n Fallon May 10 xvltll f0Lllt66H schools competlng Walle1 Hahn P1adleV and Alworth plled up n1ne dlld one tl'IlItl pomts for Fallon Earlv 1n the sprlng Coaches Falfnen and 1 an H U1 elen lssued a call fOl candldates 101 the track team Th11t1 Plgllt bo1s ICSDOPCIQCI SIX belng, lettel men Though I4 1llon has ne1 out mdlcated the change IH DI oced111c s1nce Coach Fal len took 0101 the athIet1c set11p 117 OUI school The f11st meet held 11as th 1nte1 cla meet to g11e the coaches an 1d1 1 ot the Cdlll D1lItl9S of 13110118 membels ot the squ 1d H91 WalIe1 showed consldelablc p1om1se 111 th sprmt and Bob Schne1de1 Alun Gloth Fd Xll1n Pep Holl1da1 and Robclt md Cha1l1c AI11o1th added ITOIUIN The tlnal 1es11lts L IX JLIHIOIS 18 Sophs 11 Qenlols 17 Flosh 11 A t11angula1 meet at Yelmgton bet11een Yellngton Hav1tho1 ne and Fallon ga1e th Green Wa1e then fnst taste ot o11ts1dc com petltlon After a mp and tuck b1ttle I 1llon fmlshed second to the homc tc'1m Ieadlng, Fallon s sco11ng 11 e1e B91 Wdlltl 111th a 111 t ln the 100 and 990 and a t1e 101 tn st 1n tht hxgh 1ump Donald Hahn 111th a fnst 1n the h1ch h111dles and a second 1n thc Io11 l'lIIlClli and B1Il1 B1 adlew 11 ho took fnst IH the IdX elm To 111nd 11p the meet Ifallons 1eIa1 I '4III.T, 4. gf team Bob Schneldel Al11n G1oth Ind Allyn and Be1 111alle1 11on Desp1te all these tusts Yellnffton 11on 58 to Fallon s 16 The tnnual Ye1 lngton 20 '30 1el11s 11616 held the newt 11eck P 1llon IIIIISIILCI flI1lCl 1n th fleld ot ele1en schools entelcd Hlgh llghts of the meet fOl the Cleen VV'11e 11 e11 H1hns 111nn1ng of the h1gh huldles and Challle Al11o1th s WIHHIHQ' of the pole 1ault lhe flnal l6 1llltS 11e1e Yumgrton 36 Spalks The fnst annual Fallon 20 30 meet 111th manw of the same teams ente1ed found the host G1 een XVBAQ st1II ln th11d place I'o1nt 11e1e d111ded as toIIo11s Yeungton 11 SD31kS '31 F1Ilon 21 Yel IH' ton 11as host to tc 1ms ot 111 tc111 Ne1ada ln the confe1ence meet Although SCOIIFIO' mole than an1 othe1 Pallon team 1n a contelence meet ln the past ten V6dlN Fal lon st1lI took onlw th11d place Hlgah SCOILI f0I the GICQII Wa1e 11as Groth th 1 tu f tnst 1n the hlgh 1ump and second ln lJIOd'I 1ump Be1 Walle1 took fou1th 1n the 100 and tllllil 1n thc 990 and Hahn plac d 111 both Io11 and h1gh lIlllCIlQS Othel SLOICIS 1n the huldles 11e1e Math 111th 1th11 I IH thc hlchs and AIl1n 111th a lI0LIl1lI IH the Io11s In the pole 1auIt Wllllam IVIathc11 son took second and Ch'11l11 Al11o1th t1ed fo1 th11d qpalks nosed out the Fallon 1cIa1 te1m bv about t11o 1a1ds Plnal 1es11lts ot thc meet 11e1e Yellngton 41 Sparks 37V If 1llon 28V 46 . ,Q ' L 1 I IINI 1'1111Z l'1v:11-I1 , KI I I Il2I'l'll.
