K 5 Www Churchill High School has been filled with pride and tradition since it first opened to the Churchill Area in 1963. It has offered students an outstanding education along with more extra-curricular activities than any other area high school for over 20 years. This era of Churchill High School has come to an endp however, the memories it has created will live forever even though the name will not. With this yearbook, we hope to revive these memories and instill new ones. We, the editors, would like to extend our personal thanks to our staff, who helped put this book together, and especially to Mrs. Stephens for all her dedica- tion of time, effort, and concern towards this final edition of the LANCE. Without her support, faith, and belief in us, this yearbook would not have been possible. This last edition is not only for the current Churchill students. lt's for the Class of 1965, the first graduating class, and for the Class of 1981-the last class to graduate from Churchill Area. It is for all the other classes and their winning teams, much acclaimed musicals, half time shows, and academic awards .... most of all, it's for the Class of 1987-the last graduating class from Churchill High School. We hope that each and every person who reads this comemmorative issue will recall their own special memories of Churchill High School. So .... Now we lay our LANCE to rest. It is a natural thing that the enlarging and renaming of the high school in the fall will cause a sense of loss and sadness for many people. In this final edition of the yearbook, the staff has decided to take a look back at the beginnings of what was origi- nally called Churchill Area High School Formation Of Churchill . . . Churchill was named for the Beulah Church on the hill. General john Forbes had his camp there in 1758. It wasn't until January 1, 1934 though that Churchill Borough was formed from the Second Ward of Wilkins Township. However it remained in the Wil- kins Township School District because the State Council of Education refused to allow the formation of two separate school districts. Both the Wilkins Township School District and the Forest Hills School District operated one through nine grade systems. A neighbor- ing district, Chalfant, had a one through eight system before joining with Wilkins in 1959. High school age students attended local high schools as tuition students. Most students at- tended Wilkinsburg, Turtle Creek, and Edgewood but a few attended Pittsburgh high schools and Penn Hills High School. In 1960 as a result of a referendum and a jointure agreement, Wilkins, Chalfant, and Forest Hills School Districts merged and brought the entire area under a single school administration known as the Churchill Area Schools. Initial construction began in 1961 to build a senior high school that would house grades ten through twelve. Churchill Area High School opened its doors in the fall of 1963 but during this first year, the student body consisted of only soph- omores and juniors. Seniors were permitted to attend the schools they had attended for the past two years. The first graduation was held in 1965 with much fanfare. 184 Churchill Magazine Original CASD Schools! Churchill-The Building When Churchill High School opened its doors in the fall of 1963, every effort had been made to provide a school plant that would meet program needs and anticipate needs of the future. Apparently these efforts paid off since Churchill High School will be the new school for Woodland Hills High school. The building is largely a single story structure built around an open-court enclosing the circular, glass walled library. There are over forty classrooms and special class- rooms such as industrial arts, home economics, gym, etc. The school site was developed to provide parking places for over SOO cars. There are athletic grounds to provide for football, baseball, soccer, and tennis. There are well equipped labora- tories for biology, chemistry, and physics. ln addition there is a dark room, greenhouse, animal work room, science lec- ture room and observatory. The business education depart- ment houses business machines and rooms for typing, book keeping, and accounting. Also included within the physical plant of the school are rooms for both vocal and instrumen- tal music. At the present time the school can accomodate a capacity of 1295 students. Other building statistics are as follows: site size, 46.6 acres-170,000 square feet-3,100,000 cubic feet-audi- torium seating for 1004-gymnasium seating for 1700-athletic field seating for 3,686-cafeteria seating for 450-seating for swimming events 250. ff 'ti' t ..rfs 'i , ..i'. f j gQA,gfPe-if 11,4 1 1 Wewlvy Uwe. 1 1 . Various fears and worries have begun to develop. Some of the main concerns are as follows: Will the sophomores have to go to Forest Hills? Will there be student parking? Who will be the new football coach? How will all the extra-curricular activities be handled? Will we have to share lockers? Do the sophomores next year really have to take swim- ming again? Will there be more time between classes? Will we now have night football games? Will school begin and end at a different time? And probably the biggest questions on anyone's mind . . . Will the school be finished in time? H u u 192 Churchill Magazine VU Cheers To The Class Of 88 MOTHER DAD SEAN ERIN ED ERIC, AND PATRICK 5,1 is r LKB! iw 5 , 5 ' 7 4 ,fmt Y GH! ' f.
