1 The Spartan basketball team won 15 exciting games to cap off a successful season. They finished 3rd in the Hilltop JC Invitational Tournament and 2nd in the Ki- wanis Tournament by a narrow one-point loss in over¬ time to Hoover. The team has some top notch players. Craig Wilson, a 6’ 2” Senior forward, was one of the best. A dead¬ ly shot from anywhere on the floor, Craig led the team in scoring with 319 points. His team mates voted him the most valuable player and team captain for his out¬ standing year. He was also selected Honorable Men¬ tion All-Metro. Alex Almaraz, a 6’4” junior forward, was another of the team’s outstanding players. Alex led the team in rebounding and was selected the best defensive player on the team. Alex made the 2nd team All-Metro. Louie Gonzales, a 6’2” center, was the team’s leader in assists and second in total of¬ fense with 300 points this season. Louie was also selected honorable mention All-Metro. Other players who made outstanding contributions to the team were seniors Mark Atkinson, Todd Stoddard, juniors Louie Romero, John Heller and Ron Hubbard- These players were responsible for big plays in close games that turned possible defeat into Spartan victories. One of the season’s highlights had to be the Sweet¬ water game when the student body purchased over 640 presale tickets and jammed the gym before the start of the JV game. Another was the two victories over arch-rival Hilltop. Next season the Spartans return seven players and three of them are starters Gonzales, Romero, and Almaraz.
