The season was very disappointing as far as the record reveals; the Spartans won only 2 of 9 contests. However, the win column does not show the real measure of this year’s ‘squad. The ’78 edition of the Blue and White was an emotional group. This ‘squad was one of the smallest, ‘sizewise, in the history of the ‘school. Most Friday”s found the Spartans lining up against opponents that were thirty to eighty pounds heavier. This weight difference took its toll late in the games. Even with this disadvaniage the ‘Men of Sparta’ gave all they could. This group of athletes played three of the four Metro-League playoff teams on even results until the fourth quarters. The ’78 Spartars were not thelargestinthe league but they played with their hearts. A coach cannot ask for more. This‘spirited crew was led by Captains David Nagy and Jamie Tolar. David Pudgi! was the Most Valuable Player. Other award win- ners were Mike Leake, Best Offensive Lineman; David Pudgil, Best Attitude and Best Defensive. Marty Yonekura was voted All-Metro Second Team, Receiver. Devid Pudgil and John Aposhian received hon Yonekura was voted the All-Metro Second Team, Receiver. David Pudgil and John Aposhian received Honorable Mention.
