CHUKAWAN was named after the CHUCK-A-WON-UGH-TOLY river in Alaska, with the Navy hull number AO-100 assigned. On 28 August 1945, USS CHUKAWAN (AO-100) was launched with Miss Meredith McCrea, .daughterof Rear Admiral John L. McCrea, USN, serving as sponsor. The CHUKAWAN was aquired the Navy on 22 January and commissioned the same day. Commander G.H. Burrows, USNR, Bfisumed command as the first Commanding Officer. Succeeding Commanding Officers were: Cap- tain R.B. Goldman, USNR, April 1946 to June 1947; Captain D.L. Francis, USN, June 1947 to May 1948; Captain F.O.B. Since being commissioned, the CHUKAWAN has visited many ports, either in its assigned mis- sion of delivering or receiving various fuel oils and lubricants, or for the pu rposes of granting liberty and recreation for the crew. CHUKAWAN participates in various logistic missions and exercises, delivering petroleum pro- ducts to the Fleet at sea. Normally operating with the U.S. Second Fleet, CHUKAWAN is occa- sionally assigned to tours with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, the present such assign- ment being from August 1962 to, February 1963. Other operations include Project M ' HRCURY, LANTFLEX, NATO RIPTIDE II and Midshipmen Summer Cruises. CHUKAWAN was awarded the Service Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Battle Efficiency Pennant for Al -22 Class Oilers for Fiscal Year I960. CHUKAWAN is assigned to Service Squadron Four and is homeported at Norfolk, Va.
