THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' 1. Come writers and critics Who prophecies with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again. And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin' For the loser now Will be later to win Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone, If your time to you Is worth sayin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a.-changin'! For the times they are a-changin' Come mothers and fathers, Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin' Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-chan gin' Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall. For he that gets hurt Will be he that has stalled There's a battle Outside and its ragin' It'll soon shake your windows And rattle your Walls For the times they are a-changin' The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now will Later be fast. As the present now Will later be past The order is rapidly fadin' And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-chan Copyright 1963 QUnp.J by M. MEN' HONOR COUNCIL The Men's Honor Council is composed of four sophomore representitives and three fresh- man representitives elected by vote of the student body. It is their duty to act on any off e ns e committed by a male member of the student body. The responsibility of honor is not only inthe handsof the Honor Council, but in every student. Under the honor s y st e m of Christopher Newport College every student is expected to develop and maintain his own integrity. The purpo s e of the honor system is to create an atmosphere that enables honor to grow in the student. The success of the honor council rests in the strength of each individual. Infractions of the Honor Code include cheating, stealing, lying, and failure to report an of- fense. Whenever a student is accused of a breach of this code, the Honor Council has the right to investigate and if necessary conduct an honor trial. A violation of the Honor Code is punish- able by dismissal from the college, but the penalty may be modified if the council finds reasons conclusive for doing such. 21 33 Y' , . - ,V 4 .. WOMENS HGNOR COUNCIL The Women's Honor Council at Christopher Newport College is composed of seven women: four representatives from the sophomore class and thr e e representatives from the freshman class. These seven representatives try to influence all the students in the college to put honor into their daily lives and into their every deed. The Honor Council's main objectives are to di- rect offenders and to endeavor to promote honesty in all aspects of school life. However, the backbone of the Women's Honor Council is not these seven representatives, but the students themselves. Without their acceptance of the Honor Code the Counci1's purposes and goals would remain clear but unattainable. Thus, it is the hope of the Women' s Honor Coun- cil that all students will join in its endeavors and pledge without reservation, their full and un- limited support of the Honor Code. 22 Bud Wrenn, President THE CIRCLE K CLUB 'Z I' H H if Zh ,. STUDENT GOVERNMENT Mrs. K. Scott Fitzgerald, President The Faculty and Administration are valuable aids in the operation of the SGAby giving assist- ance in the areas of smdent activities, finance, and student needs for equipment. As the relationship b e tw e e n these three bodies solidifies, it promotes a trust and respect affecting the entire student body. This trust and respect is developed through the relationship of the SGA and the students. The SGA is composed of students selected by the members of their classes. It is their duty to represent their students' views and to present the views of the faculty and administration to the students. If this job is carried out effectively, then trust and respect will grow and insure the happiness, health, and hopefulness of the college. 24 The Student Government Association, composed of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes, the Assembly, and the four Student Government Officers, work together as a team for the betterment of school spirit. This school spirit is a combination of inter-student, student-faculty and student- administration relationships. This corre- lation is necessary for the efficiency of this school to be maintained in a pleasant at- mosphere. The explaining of this correlative pro- cess begins with the SGA- Faculty-Adminis- tration relationship. Under the jurisdiction of the SGA are the many policies set by the faculty and administration. Many times these policies are developed in consultation with the Student Government members, they include parking regulations and orientation. The acceptance of these responsibilities is essential to an efficient college program. Bob Gray Ronnie Hunt Business Manager Advertising Manager The 1965 edition of the Trident boasts many improvements over last year's edition. For one thing, several color pictures have been added, and the original size of the yearbook has been expanded. Also, the staff designed its own cover this year. The entire staff takes much pride in this year's Trident and hopes that it will meet with the approval of the student body. If it doesn't, maybe you should try publishing a yearbook. 26 3 I U,gW.UQ.4M ,fiom STAFF SEATED, CL-RJ Colgate Jones, asst. to Feature Editor, Merle Curtis, Copy Editor, Sandy Paxson, asst. to Copy Editor, Gail Flax, Chairman Layout Com- mittee, STANDING, CL-RD Bob Gray, Business Manager, Jean Regone, Feature Editor, Robert Williams, Photographer, not pictured, Tommy Flax, Sports Ed- itor, Sue Cottril, Secretary. It was the result of a few stu- dent's hard work. From that effort there has evolved the present CAPTAIN'S LOG. Besides the name c han ge many other improvements have been made during the past four years. No longer is the paper mimeographed, but it is sent to a professional printer. It has in- creased from three pages to four and, in some instances, to asix or eight page production. The staff has set up an exchange program with area high schools and colleges across the nation. Encouraged by their success, the staff continues to make improvements in the content and pub- lication of the newspaper. Also under thejurisdiction of the newspaper staff is the annual Christmas dance. The high- light of this occasion is the presentation of the Christmas Court and Miss CNC, who have been previously elected in contests sponsored by the newspaper. Thus by sponsoring these activities and by presenting accurate reports, the CAPTAIN'S LOG is instrumental in arousing interest among the students. 28 U A ,,.l., , . ffqj. New among the activities at Chris- topher Newport college this year was the Young Democrats Club. Since 1964 was an election year, political interest was at a peak. Even though most of the students weren't of voting age, they wanted to par- ticipate as muchas possible in the cam- paign. They did this by displaying post- ers, attending rallies, and in general, stimulating political awareness among the students. After the November elections the club continued to function. They Worked on various projects to raise money for the Kennedy Memorial Library Fund and for a trip to Washington D.C. By partic- ipation in activities of this sort the mem- bers of the club achieved a greater appre- ciation for American politics and govern- ment. ian vu s fjif 1 P Q W is fi vu as M uw L-R, Jennifer Riley, Joanne Clark, Jim Paxton, Herminio Cuervo, Tom Hochiemer, Tom Redman. YGUNG REPUBLICANS CLUB T he Christopher Newport College Young Republican Club was started on a suggestion that the college needed something to stimulate the student body's interest in government and politics. Therefore, the C lub, the first of its kind on campus, made its general purpose: Providing the student body the means for learning more about our two party system and the Republican Party in particular. The Club was active during the national campaign passing out literature concern- ing the ideals of the Republican Party and its candidate 's views on current issues. With the election over, the Club will continue its activities in order to achieve its goal of greater know- ledge of and interest in the political affairs of this country by the students of Christopher New- port College. 31 One of the first rehearsals THE DRAMATIC WORKSHOP V.
