DEDICATION This is a special book, meant to suggest memories of our two decades and to show the continuing vitality of what we think is one of the best schools in the country. We wondered for a time to whom we could properly dedicate our Twentieth Anniversary yearbook, Then Mrs. Helen McConnell, Chairman of the Secretarial Studies Department announced her retirement. Now, although we hate to see her go, our dilemma was solved. For Mrs. McConnell is a charter member of Columbus, one of the small band still with us, who opened our doors to those first wondering students in 1939. This is one good reason we are so proud to dedicate this book to her. But there is a far more important reason why this book should be for Mrs, McConnell. On another page of this issue are comments by several of our teachers. The theme of almost every remark is friendliness -a camaraderie impossible to match in any other school of our size, anywhere. And Mrs. McConnell is the quintessence of this Columbus spirit. Speak to anyone who has ever had the pleasure, these twenty years, of being in one of her classes or working on her office staff. Listen to anyone of our girls who has been fortunate enough to have taken courses in the secretarial studies department and in some moment has known its chairman. The verdict of these students would be unanimous: Here is a teacher who is devoted to their interests, who listens attentively to their problems, and who will do anything to help them. No other teacher in our school has had more empathy with students. One dictionary defines empathy as the projection of one's personality into the personality of another in order to understand him better. Fitting, too, that Mrs. McConnell, head of the entertainment and arrangements committee for our Twentieth Anniversary, is the one to whom we write our anniversary dedication. Hail and farewelll May you always keep fresh in your heart the memory of wonderful years in Columbus, as vve, too, will always remember your devotion to us all.
