The window is on the third floor and faces out upon the front entrance of this school. I usually look out the window when I have nothing else to do, or when I'm in a very gay or melancholy mood. And every day I have always found something new to look at. One of my favorites is the little tree that stands in front of the school. During the winter months, when everything seems to be dull, that tree is dull, too. But when spring arrives, and everything, including people, begins to brighten, the tree sprouts bright greenery. Toward summer, when we're all a little tired and can't wait for the term to end, the leaves of the little tree seem to become a duller green. During the warm months, when the kids that are out of classes hang around the front of the school in small groups, I enjoy watching Mr. Sachs come out, pencil and paper in hand, and begin writing. Occasionally, as he writes, he leans against the i'No Parking sign. I was amused one day to see five cars that had parked on either side of the street drive away as soon as they saw Mr. Sachs' pencil and paper. The Institute for the Blind, across the street, affords me some of my lighter moments. I especially like to watch the dogs when they start to bark at a passer-by- a passer-by dog that is. I've seen our flag outside go from not-too-bad to worse. The rain, wind, and snow have done havoc with it, so that the poor thing is nothing more than tatters now. You can see the Empire State Building on a clear day, and an apartment house building which is made of a light colored brick, seems to gleam when the rays of the sun hit it at a certain angle. I remember seeing a young girl leave school everyday at two o'clock and stand near the edge of the curb to wait for her boy friend. Believe me it takes courage to stand there and wait for someone when there are twenty or thirty boys around. I imagine the boys got her down one day, because as she saw her boy friend rounding the corner, she ran to him. He took her books and they walked off arm-in-arm. One day I saw something that I had only previously seen in the newspapers, or in the movies: a two seater bicycle. Two young boys from the Institute were riding it around the paths. As I watched them, I began to daydream about a five or six seater. Imagine the fun you could have with it. You and your friends could go to the beach on it, or to picnics, or to the tennis courts. But, of course, I gave up the idea as whimsical. At just about the time when the kids from P.S. 89 are going home for lunch, the newspaper delivery truck pulls up in front of our school, and an argument always arises among the kids as to who is going to have the honor that day. Somehow, despite the arguments, the papers manage to get delivered in one piece. From the window you can see the women shoppers-those who have done their shopping, and those who are going to. You can see two city maintenance men paint a lamp post in ten minutes without missing a spot. You can see the cars and the trucks that roar by so loudly that you can't even hear yourself speak. All these things are part of Columbus, and each day a new part is added. JUDY KLEINBERG

They come in with ailments ranging from sprained ankles to jungle fever. The infirmary aides can't do very much about it since they usually have no knowledge of first aid. Imagine giving aspirins to students with sprained lingers, or putting band aids on sore throats. I've seen a kid come in coughing and go out limping. The teachers aren't Florence Nightingalesn either. A student came in last term with a broken ankle, and the teacher made him go back for a pass. The aides have a pretty soft job down there because they can rest on the beds if the place is empty. The trouble is that the place is never empty. After a few dozen trips to the inhrmary, the student gets an on his record card which stands for Faker . With this brand on him he could be carried in with a concussion and not get sent home. The main goal of all frequenters of the inhrmary is to be sent home, but they usually don't succeed. They come down with sore throats, fingers, and ears, swollen wrists, ankles, and toesg broken arms, legs, noses and necksg and all the diseases in the book including chicken pox, measles, and flu.
