REVOLT Convenfions, To me, are Those laws which nobody seems To have made, nobody can prove are righT, buT which everybody, excepT a few non-conformisTs, follows neverfheless. From The apparenT picfure, however, These non-conTormisTs are undispufedly in The minoriTy. For, as l see iT, conformisfs seem To conTrol The siTuaTion, considering The impressive sales of Amy VanderbilT's guide To correcT eTiqueTTe, and The number of people who admif To reading Elinor Ames' The Correcf Thing . Take, for insTance, The To-do ThaT occurred lasT year wiTh The inTroducTion of ThaT Caribbean craze called Bermuda shorTs. Before The sandsform subsided, a Bermuda-clad friend of mine was The embarrassed sTar of her own one-woman show on Times Square, and my high school almosT banned The wearing of Them on an annual boafride. Why all The fuss? ls The display of one's knees indecenT, vulgar, or ThaT unpleasanf? The sandsform became a hurricane when abbreviafed panTs began To clofhe The rugged body of The American male, previously immune To all sTyle change. Whaf was The obiecfion? ln The ciTy heaf of The summer should noT men, Too, reap The advanTages of lighfer, more comforfable aTTire? Those who opposed The occupancy of Bermuda shorTs in The modern man's closeT on The Theory ThaT his legs are noT parficularly aTTracTive To The naked eye, need only Think of whaT The ordinary person looks like in his convenTional cloThing To realize ThaT iT:s all a maTTer of geTTing used To Things. A friend of my family who works in a midTown adverfising office inaugurafed an official B-Day , wherein The enTire crew of office men risked public approval and Their jobs by coming To work in Bermuda shorTs. The resulTs, which ranged from a pedesTrian's offer To sew curTains on To his unTorTunaTe Trousers, To a bawiing ouT from The boss, were Taken in sTride, buT The office did noT Try iT again-anofher vic- Tory for convenTionaliTy! l haven'T goT a Thing To wear To an affair like ThaT! is noT an unusual remark affer an inviTaTion has been received To a formal gafhering of one kind or anofher. This may come from a person who seeks an excuse To buy somefhing new, or iT may come from an honesf individual who iusf plumb haTes To geT dressed up , and who owns no fancy cloThes, besides. And why should she? ls she noT able To look as admirable and neaT in cloThing which is noT formal? BuT Try To show up in Tailored or informal cloThing aT an affair which calls for a display of one-'s fanciesf. A normal and mosT naTural occurrence is The appearance of a beard on a man. BuT, in our American sociefy, This growTh should noT be allowed To appear. Beards are for The SmiTh BroThers, for The lndian fakirs, buT cerfainly noT for a group of New York Universify sTudenTs who collecfively decided To grow goaTees. By The Time They were fully grown, Their owners became fully disillusioned social ouTcasTs because of Their bearded faces. MOST of Them decided To call The whole Thing off, for They, or raTher The girls They wanTed To daTe, ThoughT ThaT The enTire noTion was one big flop! And so iT goes! Unless we resisT, we shall be overwhelmed by uniformiTy. I don'T know whaT you people are going To do, buT l'm going righT ouT To look for a man wearing Bermuda shorTs, wiTh a maT of hair plasfered over his chin. lT's Time we sTopped being like everybody else! CAROL BLTTZ
