E W? HELEN I-sfmc.soN 0 V QUEEN - TEMPORARILY Have you ever lell lhal no one cared aboul you? Thal you were lower lhan lhe belly ol a worm? Thal you were abused, neglecled, and complelely alone? I have a simple solulion lo relieve your hearlache. Gel sick. There are many roads lo leigned illness. I employ lhis one. I come home com- plaining ol leeling cold and lired. My molher, very concerned, sends me lo bed lo lake a nap. On awaking, I groan loudly. Molher rushes in, alarmed. I explain lhal my head, limbs, and slomach are aching. Molher louches my head and hurriedly jumps lor lhe lhermomeler. She hands il lo me and aller wailing lhe usual 'lhree minules, examines il and lhen dashes lo lhe phone. She is loo exciled lo read il properly, anyway. From my bed, I hear my molher lell his nurse lo have lhe doclor call al lhe house as soon as possible. Molher lhen relurns lo lry lo make me com- lorlable unlil lhe arrival ol lhe lailhlul 'family physician. When lhe doclor arrives, he surveys me gravely. I am given a complele exam- inalion from head lo loe. I-le explains in highly lechnical lerms lhal I have mel and been delealed by some germ or olher. Aller all, he has lo make a living, loo. Now in order lo gel lhe longed-lor allenlion, pily musl enler lhe piclure. The doclor helps lhe silualion by adminislering an inieclion big enough lo cure a horse. He lhen deparls leaving my molher gazing al me as if I were dying. I deliberalely reluse lood. This convinces molher lhoroughly. Wilh her pily salely secured, l am sure lo gel lhal of my lalher and sisler. I now slarl making my demands. I send my sisler lo lhe library wilh a requesl lor so many books lhal il will lake her al Ieasl lwo lrips lo bring lhem all home. I look al my lalher and ask lor lhe parly dress lhal is beyond my budgel. Mom is kepl busy lempling my appelile wilh my lavorile desserls and buying records lo diverl me. As lhe days wear on and il appears I am recuperaling, my lamily realizes lhal l'm nol on lhe crilical lisl and lhal I'lI be around lor a while. Things are relurning lo lheir normal pallern. Then lhe lalelul day arrives,-I am back on my leel again and on my way lo school. The pampering doesn'l slop all ol once. My lamily keeps inquiring sympalhelic- ally aboul my heallh for a lew days. How do you feel, dear? Does anylhing hurl you darling? Soon lhis loo disappears. Somelime laler, l begin lo feel uneasy. Then o lhoughl slrikes me. Could I have lell abused and neglecled because I was really ill? Nina Berlnd
