ATOM AND EVE If I were a IiH'Ie afom, I fhinlc if would be fun, To be so very I'iny, And have science on 'rhe run. The spin of my eIec'I'rons Would make me laugh and laugh, UnI'iI wi'rh a big explosion, I'd splii myself in half. Wi+h Alpha, Bela, Gamma, I'd really have a Iime, I'd fIaH'en ou'r I-his world, To fhe fhickness of a dime. Bu+ when my prank was over And I sfarled fo go my way home II would all be dus'r and rubble And I'd find myself alone. Gosh, being by my lonesome Is quiI'e a price for glee, So I guess I'II keep on being Disgus+ing IiHIe me. Laura Seidner

THE WORLD OF BOOKS Ever since I have been old enough fo foddle, books have had a lasfing influence on my life. My mofher, a woman of sound mind and high infelligence, realizing fheir usefulness, has crammed our house iusf full of fhem. The firsf room where books are of value is fhe kifchen, where fheir primary use is as a fool. They are used for propping up fhe dinner fable, which would ofherwise sag where fhe leg is broken, or as a ladder for reaching fhaf sugarbowl on fhe fop shelf. Affer all, why should anyone spend so much money on a ladder-chair when a Websfer's Dicfionary piled on a felephone book on fhe fable can fake you fo any heighf desired? Books also make excellenf diversionary facfics. While we eaf we suddenly pull ouf a book and become deeply engrossed in if. When Mofher shoufs, Ea+ your spinach! or Wash fhe dishesl , you don'f hear a word because you are foo full of Barfle'H's Quofafionsf' Books can also be used af fhe fable as a racquef for baffing back fo Mom her freshly baked sfone biscuifs. ln fhe bedroom, books have a definife funcfion. l always keep a copy of The Complefe Works of Shakespeare near my bedside fo profecf myself during fhe nighf from burglars. The ofher nighf, unforfunafely, fhe infruder furned auf fo be my brofher. He sfill has fhe face of Shakespeare imprinfed on his forehead. A book also makes a wonderful alarm-clock. When you feel fhe genfle fap of Esar's Comic Dicfionary across your derriere abouf seven in fhe morning, you can easily surmise fhaf if's fime fo gef up. Two ofher imporfanf values of books in fhe bedroom are as subsfifufes for broken window panes 'ro keep ouf fhe cold, and as fly swaffers for pesky inferrupfions of sleep. The fhird room in my house where books are of value is fhe living room. One can'+ lef one's books clash wifh fhe wallpaper, and we have such fun painfing fhe book covers fo mafchl Buf l will say fhaf books are a marvelous fhing for felevision. Five volumes of Dickens easily keep fhe sef propped up fo a comforfable eye level. We find fhaf books make a wonderful safe, for in fhem we keep our sfamp collecfion, our money Tas we don'+ believe in banks or sugarbowlsl and our corsages. Every corsage l have received on an imporfanf evenf in my life is pressed info Sfevenson's Quofafionsu under a quofafion suifable for fhe occasion, of course. Books are also useful weighfs for pressing fogefher glued papers. The favorife for my brofher's sfafisfical work is fhe Columbia Encyclopedia. He leaves if on his num- bers for a few hours and if fhose papers don'f sfick fogefher by fhen fhey are hope- less and never will. My family finds books very helpful for building fhe body beaufiful. Every morn- ing af six we each fake our furn finding fhe flaffesf book in fhe house and frying fo fear if in half. So far l have succeeded fwice la page af a fimel. My brofher is preffy good af if and he says if will evenfually become America's Favorife Pas'rime. We have also found fhaf bifing fhrough paper covered books does far more for fhe feefh and gums fhan a foofh brush, and balancing books on fhe head is wonderful for crushing dandruff. Of course, we have been fempfed fo read books, buf our resisfance fo fhaf slighf pleasure has increased our self-confrol immeasurably. All in all, my house wouldn'f be fhe same wifhouf books. We use fhem for sopping, mapping, beaufifying, exercising, heafing and muscle building. Surely we are enfifled fo feel fhaf fhe world of books is fhe mosf remarkable creafion of man. Eve Serenson

Somelimes our pilching bears a resemblance lo bowling, bul we do play a game ol one sorl or anolher. As I said, we gol a crowd ol people every lime we played, so lhal by now our games have become a neighborhood lradilion. Housewives, looking oul ol lhe win- dows lor homecoming husbands, now linger every evening lo keep lrack ol lhe score. Homeward-bound husbands slop lo lake a lurn al bal, or shag a lew in lhe oullield. proving age has laken nolhing from lheir game. Bobby, back from Queens College, hils a lew lo show us how il's done. Mr. Daly parks his car lar down lhe slreel lor us, lhen slays awhile lo josh our championship lorm. Mr. Cameron, who always waves as he goes by, slops larlher down lhe slreel lo walch an inning or lwo. Kids come lrom blocks around. Sidewalk and window allendance al our games is high-and nol always lhe same people eilher. Jusl lasl week we mel seven new boys and girls in one day. Four ol lhem, brolhers and sislers, recenlly moved inlo a sevenleen room house on lhe corner. NNhen I asked Edilh, who is lhirleen, il she was lhe oldesl, she replied, No, lhere are live older lhan me, and seven younger. We're looking lorward lo meeling lhe olher lweive! One of lhe mosl beaulilul bouquels I have ever received came from lhree year old Johnny-yellow dandelions which he shyly handed lo me, running away as soon as he had delivered lhem. Even Alberl, who lold us, l don'l play wilh girls! has become a pal ol ours.
