Life And Latin Life is real, life is earnest, And it might have been sublime, If I hadn't been kept busy Studying Latin all the time. Everybody's dead that wrote it, Everyone is dead that spoke it, Everyone must die that learned it, To My History Book If there should be another flood, For refuge hither flyg For if the world should be submerged, This book would still be dry. Happy death: they surely earned it. JANET SCHMIDT He watched the buzzing of the flies He yawned and rubbed his tired eyes. He felt depressed he wished to sing Darn that old bell, why don't you ring? MARILYN Tnnto lt's time for diplomas, proms, and rings, College or job-and all such thingsg But the thought that's uppermost in my mind Is Who'll be the next new movie find? There once was a senior named Ien Who always ran after the meng She neglected her studies And copied from buddies And now she's a senior again. IOAN HARING Gee, he's so sad to leave this school Oh but then he's just a fool. CARRIE MARCUS SONIA BURSTEIN fAll Apologies to Mr. Sternbachj Was there ever a teacher much braver Than our popular, handsome ex-shaver? He rebuked all the tsk ers And kept all his whiskers Does his final decision still waver? GRETTA S1-IOTEN 23

VERSE AND WGRSE In this, our yearbook, I aspired to place A lyric poem Filled with wit and grace. For hours I labored, Very soon grew weary. Oh, miserable day! My eyes were bleary. In the works of Shakespeare I sought inspiration. All this effort produced Was more perspiration. THE ZERO HOUR Disgusted was I, Bitter tears did I shed. Such unwonted exertion Brought a pain to my head. My hair was disheveled, The eraser worn down. My forehead acquired A perpetual frown. I looked in the mirror, Bare truth came to light. I saw not a writer, Iust a very sad sight. NORMA KULL 'Spring has arrivedg it's here in the air, Thus run thethoughts of our lady so fair, She sits in the classroom, her mind really wand'ring. On her, all the teachers their zeros are squand'ring. Why pay attention to work when it's taught, Who cares about battles and when they were fought? It's so much more fun to think of onels hero But again it arrives-that ubiquitous zero. She's taken aback, our lady so fair, She's angry enough to tear someone's hair, E'en so for her boyfriend she'll keep right on yearning Gosh, what a dope! She's not one for learning. Seniors There once was a senior named Ioe, Seniors are so light and gay, His trumpet he'd constantly blowg Soon comes graduation day. In the bandroom you'd hear 'im They're so glad to get away Till teachers couldn't bear 'im. That they shout Hip! hip! hooray! They all told our poor Ioe to blow. NINA Locfxscio ANITA SILVERMAN There once was a Senior named Smitty Thinking of Columbus and the fun they had, Who ran after girls who were prettyg The poor little graduates are all so sad. He was absent from class Wiping their eyes, And never did pass, Uttering deep sighs . . . He's a senior once more, what a pity! Quick doc, look at me, am I going mad. GRETTA SHOTEN PHYu.1s PoDo1uaFsxY Km Senior What is that thing upon their heads, That faded blue creation, That thing that's scribbled and laden down With a million complications? And pray who are those people Who pass in costumes strange. For what's come over Columbus High, What's brought about this change? Who are they . . . what are those . . . Gosh, it's the talk of the town For goodness sake, they're the Seniors And that Blue Thing' is their crown. ANITA SILVERMAN 24
