' game fl Wy 4 -fmt W ef' MJKMLJ 1 1 3' ,siylr riff , ., v ' i l' l DX 3 004 gtifi PRlNclPAL's PAGE YEARBOOK MESSAGE-JUNE 1946 What with gramicidin, penicillin, insulin, sulfa-compounds, vitamins, hormones, oxygen tents, iron lungs, transplanted corneas and other marvels of medical science, I am sure you are all going to live for at least sixty years more. I wish I were as sure that you are going to be at ease and happy in a peaceful world. I am not because I know that your lives are going to be worked out in the presence of a struggle between two opposed and irreconcilable concepts of human social and political organization, namely, democracy and totalitarianism. You must choose between them and the choice may not be easy, for two reasons. First, both have advantages. Second, the eHort to distinguish between them is confused by the claim of totalitarianism that it actually is democracy, and by the current tendency of democracies to adopt devices heretofore regarded as logical only under totalitarian forms of government. To clarify what follows, I propose the following definitions. Democracy is a form of organization in which supreme power resides always in all of the people and is exercised by representatives whom they elect and whose tenure of oliice they control, in which all the people have political and legal equality without hereditary or arbitrary differences in rank or privilege, and in which all individuals are free to assemble, speak, write, print, worship, form associations of any kind, including political parties, and in general to act freely within the limits of laws, the making of which embodies their consent to be governed by rules which they may change, repeal, or retain at will. Totalitariariism is a form of organization in which the state claims and exercises the right to dominate every phase of national life, and in which the government is so organiized as to be dominated by one political party or one power which does not permit recognition of or representation by any other political party. These are calm, objective, dictionary definitions. but the implications of the difference will leave no sensitive person calm. To say that totalitarianism is or can be democracy is an outright lie and should be recognized as such, no matter where it exists, what its local name is, who heads it, or what one's sympathies, racial, religious or political, may be. It is inescapably the rule of all by a part, the domination of everyone by a self-chosen fraction, a form of control necessarily self-perpetuating and therefore brooking no opposition, and compelled to maintain itself in power by using hired thugs, thought-police, spies, and a special-benefit-and-privilege party or army large enough to keep the people subdued. The membership of the party may change somewhat from time to time, through blood purge, starvation, or imprisonment, but the party and its control of the life of the nation continue. I said above that both systems have advantages. Democracy gives freedoms to the individual, but one of these is freedom to commit political suicide, to destroy freedom itself. Freedom to be a truly great spirit, or to be a wretch. Freedom to work for the common good, or to try to exploit our economy for selfish ends. Freedom for unlimited trial and error, for an ever-changing, never-at-rest effort to reconcile conflicting desires, to obtain agreement on one purpose out of many. In contrast to the unceasing turmoil arising from the exercise of individual freedoms in democracy, totalitarianism presents a picture of order, of definiteness, of singleness of purpose. There is no complicated structure of checks and balances between separately autonomous governmental bodies. There are no strikes in key industries to interfere with the operation of the national economy. No, indeed! And no danged nonsense, either, about individualistic competitive influences on the prices of commodities. No Fords, Kaisers, Chryslcrs, Endicott-Iohnsons, Crosby, Eric Iohnstons, International Harvesters, or Sears Roebucks. Deviators! Disturbers! Individualistic producers of disorder! There is one other advantage that totalitarianism has over democracy. It relieves most people of the necessity of thinking. You don't have to make decisions, they have been made for you. In a democracy you are forever being urged and exhorted and driven to think, to act, to join, to debate, to participate, to decide, to help make decisions because the decisions will be what you make them. No such goings-on under a totalitarian government. You don't have any individual opinions. Not out loud. This is it, brother, and you do it. Or maybe you'd prefer to improve your muscle-tone with a ten-year stretch in the salt mines? Who are you, anyhow? The State is the supreme source of power and that's where your orders come from. No deviationism. No opinionated individualistic side- slipping. No, you don't do any thinking on your own. Not even if you are a member of the Party. In fact, most particularly not if you ARE a member of the Party. fWell, boys and girls, which are you going to choose? For, choose you must. As I know you understand, I hope that, despite all its blundering and uncertainties in action, its turmoil and change and falling short of perfection, your choice will be definitely and permanently for democracy. I say this because I know it represents the greatest effort in the history of mankind to work out in practice the principles of Hebraic-Christian religion and ethics. I believe profoundly that all men were created equal and that they were endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. I believe that political power is a natural right of man, that the individual citizen is the source of power, that the control of power must be in him, and that the state is never rightly the master of man but a device created by him for the purposes of self-government. I am sure that you have these beliefs also. But I must warn you again that in a democracy we are free to destroy our own freedoms and that the transition from freedom to self-imposed bondage could be deceptively easy because it had been gradual. In some ways your graduation, at this time, poses difhculties that are rather unusual. Many of you have found it extremely difficult to obtain enrollment in the college of your choice. Others of you are concerned with the problems of obtaining placement in the world of business. The return of vast numbers of veterans has closed many avenues to you. Only the weak will be dismayed by the complications that are evident. For all of you who persevere there is a successful solution. The determination of each of you, as individuals, to Find your place is the most important ingredient in the formula for success. Hard work, diligent application, the never say die spirit, are needed as much today as they were in the early days of the pioneer. Becker In this age of uncertainties each of you may be certain of one thing-that from now on it is your task, as it is the task of every civilized person, to keep the peace. Surely you who have spent four years here in Columbus do not need to have proved to you your personal responsibility for this task. You have not lived in a free school society without realizing that its benefits may be secured for all only by the efforts of each. So that, aware of your responsibility and having accepted it, your only question is How shall I go about it? What specifically must I do? Not one of you but will attempt to Fill the prescription for peace if once it is given you. And how I should like to be able to give a prescription easy to fill, a panacea applicable to any problem at any time. But, that is the sort of push button routine that works well in emergencies like war and in other situations that respond to dictator tactics. It argues reliance on force rather than reasong it is tinged alas with power and gloryg it caters to the all-too-general tendency to let the other fellow do the thinking and the deciding. Whereas keeping the peace demands eternal vigilance, thinking as well as feeling, sacrihcing the desire for temporary victories and selhsh gain. It is humdrum, without fanfareg it does violence to our merely material selves, and is as homely as secure family life which exacts so much patience, so much compromise. The analogy I hope is clear. Your share in keeping the peace will in a sense be a daily humdrum job. because it involves carrying into all your large and small concerns of life the conviction that if you want peace you must work and sacrihce for it. It means building a solid foundation of rational thinking, of moral standards the same for all nations. This is not easy to do. because the use of one yardstick for your friends, your enemies, and yourselves requires genuine courage. It is not easy to face the fact that the country that persecutes negroes is as guilty as the one that liquidates non-Aryansg or that right is right and wrong is wrong whether Stalin or Byrnes is under consideration. In short it would seem that your contribution to the major task we all have in common is fundamentally the disciplining of your thoughts and actions to provide a solid foundation for peace. ELSA G. Then suddenly you notice things you never noticed before. How startled you are to see relatives and friends that you haven't seen in many years. You discover they appear so much older than you remembered. Your conception of life has changed. What you once considered fun just doesn't appeal to you any longer. You find yourself dwelling on thoughts of hap- penings in the world, and often trying to solve the mystery of how people's minds work. No longer are your thoughts limited to yourself and those immediately about you. Gradually your mind is admitting new thoughts. Since you started in high school, you thought graduation represented the wonderful day when you would step from the carefree garden of youth into the complicated life of an adult. Suddenly you're a senior and graduation looms before you. When you step forward to receive your diploma on Graduation Day, it is with a realization that you have grown up and are ready to face whatever may come in the world outside. You square your shoulders and silently determine to do your part to be an honest citizen and to accept your new responsibilities. IOAN G. HARING NOSTALGIA Linda had been rummaging through an old trunk in the attic when she unearthed a faded blue hat with a ridiculously long feather on one side. All sorts of unusual buttons were pinned together on the hat. It's my Senior Hat! she exclaimed to herself. As she examined it, her surroundings were blotted out by nostalgic thoughts of her high school days. Linda was back in the crowded halls of her school. Funny how the halls always reminded her of a subway during the rush hours. She could again see the cafeteria and hear the sounds of many voices mingled with the odor of food. She could recall standing on line waiting to buy her lunch while delicious odors wafted to her nose, tantalized her. 16 There had been experiences that stood out in her mind, some proud, some embarrassing. Once when only a humble Freshman, she had stumbled into the wrong classroom, only to discover her mistake in the middle of the period. She had stam- mered something incoherent to the teacher and, to the delight of the class, had fled. There had been a play in which Linda had taken part. She was a Spanish girl and, during the course of the play, had to recite a poem in Spanish. How hard she had struggled to perfect her accent. When the play was over and the applause was thunderous, Linda secretly felt that some of it was for her performance. The fun of being a Senior was only occasionally clouded by the thought of leaving the school she had attended for four years. How delighted Linda had been when she received her Senior hat and how much fun it had been to attempt to outdo all other Seniors in making her hat the most unusual one. It had only been achieved by the addition of a feather which was twelve inches long. The teachers had regarded her with amusement when she wore it and her friends were envious. There had been yearbook pictures which caused her to wonder if she really looked like the girl in the picture. Her nose appeared too large and her face reminded her of the faces painted by El Greco. She hadn't minded too much. It was easy to laugh at herself. When she had received her diploma, a thought clung to her mind in the way ivy clings to a wall. She then remembered how afraid she had been to go to school when she was a little child. Her fears had been allayed by a kindly teacher who afterwards remained her friend. It was like that when she graduated. She half dreaded the thought of leaving and finding herself in a new world. There was however a calm voice inside her that repeatedly told her she need not fear the future but should look forward to it like a new adventure. Linda turned the pages of her imaginative mind. MILLER 19 A SENIOR HAT SPEAKS I am a Senior Hat. For many months now I've been bouncing around on the head of a bright young senior of Christopher Columbus High School. This is the night of the prom and suddenly I'm not needed any more. The bright young head went bare this evening and I have been left at home on the dresser by myself. I can see my own comforting reliection in the mirror. I'm all blue with a silver stripe around me and a silver pompom is my crown. Really though, I'm just a cart full of memories. I See that G.O. button--yes, that's right-the blue one with Spring Term 1943 and the silver ship on it. No, it's not merely a circle of painted metal to the bright young senior. It is a symbol of her first love. It was an exchange for an Arista button and she wore it pinned on her sweater every day, next to her heart. Soon however, it took its place, as I will now, in a drawer with other outgrown things. But she'll always remember that it stood for something special and lovely. And the blue and silver feather perched cockily on my top. It's a remem- brance of the library where she found it. It had been pressed in a dictionary on the page near the definition of adolescence, She had saved it until her last term of school, knowing how well it would look, waving triumphantly over the brim of her senior hat. There's the new original Senior Button looking at itself sideways in the mirror so that its vanity won't be noticed. Its face is painted with caricatures of seniors with their noses in the airg it was once worn proudly, eagerly by those it represented. I myself, am one of the most important souvenirs of high school days. I was decorated with loving care and made my senior conspicuous in crowds. People laughed at me but my beauty was protected and defended. I belong to a senior-Oh, the door is opening. My bright young senior is home from the prom. She's entered the room now, only she isn't wearing the clothes I'm accustomed to. I'm afraid I wouldn't look well with these new ones. After so many years of fighting in distant places that used to be just funny names on a map, Iohnny is coming home! He has never known what it has felt like having a service star in the big front window, facing the porch instead of a teasing, jolly brother who often helped with the dishes or with my geometry. I know Iohnny probably has changed but so have we. Materially we might all look a bit different. I've begun to wear my hair in an upsweep. He has gone through a number of battles and was wounded. While he was gone, we never gave up hoping, hoping that some day soon we would all be together again. When that day comes, I shall rejoice. There will be a grateful prayer on my lips but inside I'll be thinking about those men who will never return to their families. Why didn't God spare them too? We might all be thinking that too, and oifering a silent prayer. Iohnny will have changed too. He will stand straight and tall but he will be quieter than he was. He may be different outwardly but we know he is the same Johnny who left us to serve his country. After dinner we will all gather around the fireplace in the living room and talk and exchange reminiscences. I'll ask Iohnny if he remembers the time he fell into the brook and Dad had to pull him out. He might laugh and tease me about the time I played a witch in the school play and how I cackled like a hen Qso he saidj. Or he might not talk much at all. He might merely sit and listen to us, trying to convince himself that he was really home at last. I won't care how he acts, I'll be so happy that he is back with us and not on a battlefield half way around the world. When Iohnny comes home, it will be the end of a long period of loneliness for all of us. For him it will be the beginning of a new life at home. He will do things that he has done all of his life and was forced to leave. I know he will be glad to reestablish his life as he never thought he would again. IOAN G.
