OUR The world today is ours in many ways. It belongs to us individually. and as individuals we may do with it as we choose. However. it is as a single unit that this class and other classes graduating with us will have the world to mold and direct according to the ideals we presently have. This is the unit which will guide the world. There are hoys fighting now who are part oi a group which did not thinlc that it would have to light. Yet, these young men are laying the necessary ground-worlc for us. hy their sacrifices on all hattleironts. They are malcing it possible ior the world to he ours. We owe them more than simple gratitude lor what they are doing: we can repay them only loy accomplishing all that is expected of us and even more in the years ahead. We must not rejoice and feel satisfied hecause the world that will be there for us in the iuture will he more pleasant than the one we live in now. We must contrihute our concerted energies toward malcing that world. our world. a hetter one. Unless we fulfill this ololigation completely. we cannot have the lcind of world that everyone is looking forward to. One might thinlc that it is strange for a group ol sixteen and seventeen year olds to consider the world their own. However, there is nothing at all unusual or illogical about this premise. This group is, perhaps, more democratic. more tolerant. more willing to work than any other group in the country. As yet. they have won nothing: therefore they have nothing to lose. They are capable oi having iaith in the ideals that most people refuse to consider practical. Brotherhood is not a mere word to them. There is nothing more alien to their minds than uneasiness and distrust. They aren,t afraid of equality. for they have seen it succeed in their schools. The world helongs to those who are fighting for it now, and to those who will not he afraid to lead it along the designated paths later on. That's why these boys and girls call the world their own. Tomorrow's leaders will come from those who claim the world today. These leaders will not resemhle those oi the past in any way. and it is certain that they will not commit the same disastrous mistalces. There is no douht that they will diizier from our present leaders in many respects. lVluch will account for this change. hut there is one reason more prominent than all the others. It is the realization that these men will he leading people who have, themselves. helped in the shaping of the world. They will, of their own accord. have decided the direction in which to go. They won't follow blindly: they will act intelligently. And these are the stu' dents who are graduating now. These graduates have difficult worlc to accomplish. The world is theirs to in- fluence and guide. The way ahead will not he easy, hut the route is ohvious and must be talcen. FLORENCE XVINKLER H
