Andre Fontaine and Mr. Irving Lasher. No one who knew these men is left unmoved hy their recent deaths. No one can forget them, nor the ethical principles that they in- cutcated. nor the work they accomplished. Vve realize that our small trihute Witt in no way assuage the grief caused hy their departureg nevertheless we desire to show our gratitude for the things they stood for. Mr. Fontaine was with Columbus since the school opened, and devoted himself whole-heartedly to the school. He found time for a multiplicity of outside interests such as gardening and paint- ing. in which he displayed his characteristic energy and enthus- iasm. He sponsored many useful innovations in the schoors ad- ministration. A vihrant speaker, a sympathetic listener, Wir. Fontaine inspired all the students he met. He will always remain a part of Columbus tradition. hir. Lasher was a guide to students who needed to he led: he was the powerful, vital force who imhued boys and girls with the spirit of his own religious and moral convictions. The pupils he guided, the ctuh he estahiished, the echoes of his presence in Cotumhus, att these are his monuments here. Vvhite this trihute to Wir. Lasher and Wir. Fontaine as in- spiring teachers. as welt as friends. confidants. companions, and motders of our future. may seem totally inadequate, it is expressed with the deepest sincerity of the graduating seniors. Our only hope is that some day, in some way, we may justify the sacrifices they have made in our behalf. OUR YEARBOOK To a casual reader. one not directly concerned with the Senior Class of June. l045. this Yearhoolc will have little or no significance. He will merely note. hetween these two covers, an assortment ol literary essays. a collection of photographs. and. to him, utterly irrelevant jolces and jingles which the Jingle Committee has inserted. However, to the members ol the Class. and to their ahle advisers, this com- pilation of literary, artistic. and humorous material has a deeper, liner import. Here, on these printed pages, is collected the life-breath ol' the Senior Class in .the lmlaclc and white of print and paper. The literary achievements are not to he regarded merely as good or had litera- ture, but as the souvenirs left hehind hy a representative portion of the Class. The photographs will serve. when the present Seniors loolc haclc with that Hinward eye upon the days spent in Christopher Columbus. as the delicate rememhrances of the past. The Jingles accompanying will momentarily he read. laughed at. and forgotten. But. in that dim future. when this hoolc is talcen from the attic and the dust hlown from its cover, each Jingle will he read and read again, and visions of the past will he conjured up. The lite-hreath, so carefully stored away in this chest of print and paper. will permeate the room. and long forgotten incidents, long forgotten hopes. and long forgotten worries will he lived over again. Here, then, is a chest containing many things. Vvhen age has mellowed the ingredients. the sum total of them all will he a sweet perfume. the perfume of Memory. Nlay its delicate odor never diminish in strength. As the years march on. may it gain in purity, in delicacy. and in fragrance. , s 'ts TO THE GRADUATES OF JU E l945 lt seems quite clear that you boys and girls are going to spend the next twenty-five years in the middle of a iiveiy battle between two opposed attitudes which can be loosely but fairly described as the preservation-of-free-enterprise-in-a- capitaiistic-democracy viewpoint and the Federal-Government-management-of-a- planned-economy viewpoint. Each side has determined and intelligent adherents and is able to present a good deai of persuasive evidence. Of Tate we have been hearing much about the necessity for continuing production quotas and ceiling prices for an indefinite period after the termination of hostilities. At the same time we have increasing evidence of the development of black markets, and the newspapers inform us that in general each group of producers is diligently at work trying to persuade the Office of Price Administration that price fixings and price ceilings are very admirable indeed, for ali other fields of endeavor, but are about to produce disaster in their own. g There is a great deal of evidence for the conclusion that many, many individ- uals and powerful groups are trying to seize what they can for themselves with little regard for the effect of their actions on our economy as a whole. In brief, we are conducting two wars: abroad, one of arms, at home, one of ideas. inevitably we are confused because while trying to finish a war, We are trying to begin a return to peace, and this effort is complicated by the fact that we are trying to attain a baiance between governmental and individual activities. This effort to attain a balance is not at all easy. There are some things that we ieei pretty sure are legitimately government activities, such as, Hood control, carrying the mails, and fire prevention. There are other activities that we are pretty sure ought to be the endeavors of private enterprise, such as running a store, being a lawyer, or developing a business. There are many activities that we carry on in both iways, public and private, such as, education, supplying water to communities, building bridges. furnishing electric power, and providing medical attention. Also, when activities become very large, or when they are related to general welfare, We have a feeling that Government regulation and supervision are necessary, as in the case of railroads, and the marketing of stocks and bonds. and milk. Now, which way is our country going? Not, T believe. ali the way to a planned economy, nor back to the days of unrestricted freedom for urugged individualism. T believe and T hope we are going to continue with the difficult business of trying to find a sensible, woricabie balance. The necessities of this war have compelled us to accept an amount and a kind of regulation that many among us would iike 4 . lo see exlenclecl inlo line posl-war periocl ancl expanclecl even lmeyonci wllal llne war llas enloreeci. ll seems lo me lllal we slloulcl relleel lllal cluring lime lorly years preeecling lllis war Illc consumer priees ol aulomolliles. radios, wasliing lllilClIillf'S. flillllillg. lools. and a lllousancl ollner eommoclilies eleereaseel, wllile llle qualily ol line goocls prociueecl ancl line wages ol lime worlcers wiio proclueecl lllem inereasecl. ' g,JLJS..2 LITERATURE OUR The world today is ours in many ways. It belongs to us individually. and as individuals we may do with it as we choose. However. it is as a single unit that this class and other classes graduating with us will have the world to mold and direct according to the ideals we presently have. This is the unit which will guide the world. There are hoys fighting now who are part oi a group which did not thinlc that it would have to light. Yet, these young men are laying the necessary ground-worlc for us. hy their sacrifices on all hattleironts. They are malcing it possible ior the world to he ours. We owe them more than simple gratitude lor what they are doing: we can repay them only loy accomplishing all that is expected of us and even more in the years ahead. We must not rejoice and feel satisfied hecause the world that will be there for us in the iuture will he more pleasant than the one we live in now. We must contrihute our concerted energies toward malcing that world. our world. a hetter one. Unless we fulfill this ololigation completely. we cannot have the lcind of world that everyone is looking forward to. One might thinlc that it is strange for a group ol sixteen and seventeen year olds to consider the world their own. However, there is nothing at all unusual or illogical about this premise. This group is, perhaps, more democratic. more tolerant. more willing to work than any other group in the country. As yet. they have won nothing: therefore they have nothing to lose. They are capable oi having iaith in the ideals that most people refuse to consider practical. Brotherhood is not a mere word to them. There is nothing more alien to their minds than uneasiness and distrust. They aren,t afraid of equality. for they have seen it succeed in their schools. The world helongs to those who are fighting for it now, and to those who will not he afraid to lead it along the designated paths later on. That's why these boys and girls call the world their own. Tomorrow's leaders will come from those who claim the world today. These leaders will not resemhle those oi the past in any way. and it is certain that they will not commit the same disastrous mistalces. There is no douht that they will diizier from our present leaders in many respects. lVluch will account for this change. hut there is one reason more prominent than all the others. It is the realization that these men will he leading people who have, themselves. helped in the shaping of the world. They will, of their own accord. have decided the direction in which to go. They won't follow blindly: they will act intelligently. And these are the stu' dents who are graduating now. These graduates have difficult worlc to accomplish. The world is theirs to in- fluence and guide. The way ahead will not he easy, hut the route is ohvious and must be talcen. FLORENCE XVINKLER H WDRLD Our world is dilllerent from any other generations world. Prohahly that is hecause we are more conscious of the fact that it is our world than any other gen- eration helore us, and, because it is our world, we want everything in it our way. The way lwlom wants the curtains just Uthat way in her kitchen-that's how we want our world. Up to this point in our lives we have seldom thought of this gigantic litho- sphere as our world. VVe've thought in terms of the lew streets which offered a haven for Hour gang. VVe've lived in expectation of a chocolate malt in the Rear Admiral alter the eighth period. Qur world was a whirl ol' proms. zany Easter honnets. and the Savoy. Our world is all that, hut it includes one thing more. mingled among the laughter and jazz is a war-just as plain and simple as that. hut we are poignantly aware of it, more so than you will ever lcnow. Every time we piclc up a newspaper or turn on the radio or wallc into the auditorium and see 550 girls and 45 hoys. we are reminded. Because we refuse to listen to Lowell Thomas' gruesome details ol loattlelronts and ignore aunts' and uncles' morbid conversations of death and haslcet cases. doesn't mean that we are forgetting ahout it or trying to shrinlc from it. VVe're merely trying to talce it in our stride and live the lives we would have lived in normal times. Vve want our ideas ol' normalcy imhedded deep. now, because those ideas insure peace. Vve want our ideas installed in our world hecause the nucleus of our ideas is a peace which will last until the end ol' time: a peace which will pro- vide colces, and boogie. and zany Easter honnets to future generations ol' Seniors until Alma Maters cease to he. EILEEN PRICE EPITAPH Here iie the Seniors who died in expectation Vvaiting for the hats, the prom, and graduation! Ensns EICHNER Z0 TYPICAL SCHOOL DAY Yesterday was a rather uneventful school day. The aIarm cIocIc announced its presence at promptIy 8 o'cIocIc after which I I'eII asleep again. I was awakened however about 8:30 hy a terrified shrielc from my mother. Somehow my clothes were thrown on, my Iarealciast thrown in. and I was thrown out hy 8:55. After dashing under cars. dropping my hoolcs, and forgetting my Iunch. I managed to pant into school with the Iate hell. I was quickly relieved of my aI- Iowance hy representatives Irom senior hats, senior dues, senior prom, class ring. G. O.. Red Cross. and a multitude of others. This was Iollowed shortly hy the ceIestiaI chimes of Dr. I.oughran's broadcast. We all greeted with joy the an- nouncement that IVIrs. SnycIer's class was the first to have IOOWJ G. O. memhership. After ahsorhing that tidbit. we had the pleasure of Iearning just which morons had departed from their vaIuaIJIe possessions the previous day. The rest of the home room period was spent in doing English homeworlc. The start of each period found one oI my riIJs popping through my new white sweater. Gaunt with hunger. I IinaIIy rushed down an up staircase and collapsed into the cafeteria, where I was eventually revived hy the delightful aroma of an egg sandwich. Alter hungrily devouring my Iunch, I applied fresh Iipsticlc, hlotted it on the Inaclc of my Latin hook, and prepared to copy my Iriend's Eco. homeworic just as the hell rang. Naturally my next period class was on the 4th floor. As I started on my journey. I wished vainly for a hrolcen arm that would entitle me to an elevator pass. The first iiight of stairs Wasnyt too had. It was made with a minimum of effort and I was hearing up admirahly as I attaclced the second flight. That was a Iittte more diI:I:icuIt. I gasped a hit and shifted my hoolcs. hut on the whole managed to withstand the strain.
