I hope you will excuse my fhoughflessness. I lefl' for Camp Dix on January fhe 28 iusf one hour before fhe graduafion exercises sfarfed af fhe 'Loew's American.' We arrived af Dix in fhe midsf of a ferrible hail sform. We remained in Camp Dix for six days, drilling, faking examinafions, and being classified. On February 3, we leff Dix wifhouf fhe slighfesf idea of where we were going or in whaf branch of fhe Army we were fo be placed. Once fhe frain Ieff Dix we were informed fhaf we were in fhe Army Air Corps, buf fhey would nol' fell us where we were going. Well, as fhings furned ouf we found ourselves in Miami Beach, Florida. While we were in Miami, we lived in luxury. We were living in luxurious hofels. Each room had ifs own shower and we had soff hofel beds in place of 'lhe Army's G. I. beds. We wenf fhrough an eighfeen day basic fraining period in Florida, and we were classified as fo whaf branch of fhe Air Force we would be puf info. I chose Aerial Phofography and fhaf's whaf I received. When fhe basic fraining was complefed, we wenf info advance fraining and fhose who had safisfacforily complefed fheir basic fraining were puf onxg lisf of men awaifing shipmenl' fo one school or anofher. I shipped ouf of Florida on fhe sixfeenfh of February and spenf six nighfs and five days on fhe frain. I am now sfafioned ouf here af Loury Field in Denver, Colorado, and fhis coming Monday I will sfarl' a fwelve week course in Aerial Phofography. Incidenfally, iusf before I was shipped oul' of Florida, I received my firsf sfripe. I was raised from a Buck Privafe fo a Privafe Firsf Class. I really like This life a lof, buf fhere are fimes when I gel' so homesick fhaf I iusf don'1' know whaf fo do. I fhink fhal' if I can iusf gel' home 'lo see my folks once I'll be all righf. In my fraveling from Dix fo Florida and fhen here 'ro Denver I have mef quife a number of boys 'lhal' came from Columbus. I'm very sorry I didn'l wrile any sooner, bul I was very busy wilh shipping and school. As you probably can see by lhe envelope, I am now in Soulh Dakola. From Sunny Florida lo lhe hills of Dakola, and boy does il gel cold up here. The week I came we had 360 below zero, so you imagine how cold il gels. I lell Miami Beach aboul a monlh ago and as soon as I arrived here I slarled going lo school. My course consisls ol lheory and code. They are lrying lo make a Radio man oul ol me. bad, bul hall lhe lime lhe class lalls shill, and il's prelly hard lo sleep in l0:50 P.M., al 2:30 A. M. we eal, and leave school al 6:20 and back lo our barracks lor caleslhenics lrom 6:45 lo 8:I5. Then we clean our barracks and gel ready lor inspeclion. Al 9 A.M. we have our supper, and al I0 we gel our mail. We are nol allowed lo go Iellers and gab. Before lwelve comes , so we hang around lor a lew hours Well, lhal is all aboul me. How's lhe lhe army? Boy, I sure wish I had been The course is I8 weeks, and il isn'l asleep because we have lhe nighl lhe day lime. We slarl school al we have lo be in class al 3:l5. We lo bed unlil I2 P.M., so we wrile around we are nol lired anymore more, bul we leel il in lhe evening. school? Did any leachers leave lor al gradualion, bul lhal was impossible. I wonder if lhere is any chance lo gel lhe school paper. ll lhere is, I would appreciale il very much, because I miss lhe school, and I would like lo read aboul everyone, and gel all lhe dope on aclivilies. Liffle River, Soufh Carolina Dear Mrs. Helfer: Well here I am in Soufh Carolina. We passed Norfh Carolina yesferday and fhe day before. Chrisfmas Eve we sfopped in a liffle fown called Bel- haven, N. C. If was quife a nice fown. I fried fo call home buf was fold I'd have 'ro waif af Ieasf fhree hours for fhe call fo go fhrough. So fhaf ended fhaf, I fhoughf. A couple of fhe boys and I decided 'lo drown our Chrisfmas Blues. While doing fhe same I happened fo become acquainfed wifh fhe chief of police. Well anyhow, he 'look me over fo fhe sfafion house and fold me I could call any place in fhe U. S. and folk as long as I wanfed as a Chrisfmas presenf from fhe fown, fhrough him. As if was an official wire my call wenf righf fhrough. Boy, was I a happy fellow. Affer making my call I fixed if so fhaf fwo ofher fellows could do fhe same. In fhe wind-up fhe score was fhree happy families, fhree happy sailors, and one proud police chief. We also gof an invifafion fo fhe chief's home for Xmas dinner buf we had fo shove off early fhe nexf morning. We lefl' N. Y. as I suspecfed early Sunday morning I3 A.M.l.
