F .. l-listory. Regular attendance, lectures, and tests seem to be standard procedures for a class at Christian. But not so with Problems in American Civilization ll, a three hour course taught by Dean Jack L. Bat- terson. Its requirements are simple-a paper written on an aspect of American civilization. The class does not meet regularly, but only on a help session basis. This semester there is only one student, Marcia Miller. She describes herself as being lucky to have taken such a course in which there are no deadlines, except of course, the final paper. She feels that details fall into line much more easily when a student is able to work without pressure. Dean Batterson has this to say about the course, I think the course is of particular value to the student who has a special interest in Amer- ican history and the capacity to do independent study and research. It affords such a student a rare opportunity at the sophomore level to delve deeply into a subject of special interest to her. lt also affords the Dean, who is a fugitive from the classroom, the opportunity to continue work- ing with his subject matter and with students in the learning situation. Nancy Turner, CC's Outstanding Senior, enjoyed the distinction of being the only student enrolled in a class this year. She says of the experience: My language proficiency stems from the year I spent in Germany as an American Field Service student. Last year I completed the highest German courses of- fered at Christian. Wanting to continue with the language through my second year here, I went to talk with Dean Batterson. When German V and VI were added to the curriculum, President Hill agreed to teach the course. ln September I started reading simple chiIdren's books. But as the semester progressed, so did my reading ability. I occasionally noticed a raised eye- brow when I pulled out one of the James Bond books-but President Hill's idea is that a person should learn how to read common language found in fiction and novels before he tries to tackle Schiller, Goethe and other authors of great literature. This semester l've had a few World War II novels-told from 513 the German point of view. l've gained many insights into the German think- ing of the second World War. So often l've been guilty of thinking of the Ger- mans in the vague term 'enemies' without realizing that they were people who believed they were fighting for the right, just as we Americans did. Of class meetings, Nancy says: The atmosphere is always very informal. The hour begins with my telling him a plot summary of the book I have read that week, and he askes questions as I go along. President Hill loves play- ing the deviI's advocate-if I take one stand on a situation we're discussing, he takes the other. But the important thing is that I get from these discussions a better con- cept of values, myself and people in general. He is teaching me to develop my mind in regard to life as well as teaching me how to read German. I can honestly say that l've never had a class that I have enjoyed so much yet at the same time learned so much. .'l i l i N I I 4 l l ll i l ii l ,I l I 4 V l l i i l i I l l i , , Bienvenu a La Maison Francaise. literature. La Maison Francaise, Christian College's French language house, was established on the conviction that the only way to really learn a language is to live with it. The French House was opened to students in 1964, and it provides a learning-living situation for the students who are interested in French. lt serves as a campus home for sixteen students and pro- vides language experience for both first and second year stu- dents. La Maison Francaise is a spacious, three-story brick residence hall located on Christian College Avenue, adjacent to th ' ' e main campus. Mme. Hortense Davison, born of French parents and educated in France and the United States, serves as directrice- in-residence. The 'tFrench only, sil vous plait rule applies at certain meals during the week when French conversation is re- quired at the French Table. House meetings, similar to those held in the residence halls, follows the same rule. Parlimentary pro- cedure is carried out in French. ln this way residents make an effort to communicate in French as much as possible They also make use of audio-visual aids, supervised study, and discussion sessions. French Girl on Campus Twenty-one-year old Suzanne Gouleieff from Brison, France, assists in La Mai- son Francaise. Suzanne is the assistant to Madame Davison in the French House. She instructs classes at the University of Missouri three times each week. Outstanding Senior Nancy Turner Each year Phi Theta Kappa sponsors the selection of the Outstanding Senior. A committee composed of faculty and administration members, various campus officers, represen- tatives from Phi Theta Kappa, and representatives selected from among the student body by Phi Theta Kappa members is established to decide the honor. The Outstanding Senior is chosen on the basis of scholarship, character, interest in maintaining the ideals of Christian College, and her partici- pation on campus in various activities. This year Nancy Turner received the title of Outstanding Senior. The Outstanding Senior is chosen in the early spring, but Nancy was not intro- duced until the second semester honor assembly, where she was presented with roses. Nancy was also introduced at the Phi Theta Kappa Breakfast and pre- sented with the Outstanding Senior bracelet, which is passed on from year to year. Here, in a candlelit room with an extremely casual atmosphere, students and other members of the Christian Col- lege community are able to enjoy entertainment and to exchange ideas. Programs at the coffee house this year featured a discussion with five local hippies, debate on the pros and cons of the Viet Nam war, group discussion of the movie The Graduate, readers' theatres, and folk singing by CC students and guests from the university. The Hungry Ear is run by a student committee of six and is sponsored each time by one of the dorms. Parents Weekend Parents and young brothers and sisters from all parts of the country arrived for Parents' Weekend beginning November 2. President W. Merle Hill ad- dressed the group on Questions Parents Ask. Dis- cussions led by fathers and daughters followed. Weekend entertainment was provided by the Double Sextette. In addition parents were able to talk with instructors. New Orleans is the center of the annual Mardi Gras festival, but on Feb. 26 masked jesters and colorful ladies made their way to Christian College for the annual Senior Banquet. The banquet was held in the Dulany dining room, which was deco- rated in multi-colored streamers, lanterns, balloons, and other traditional Mardi Gras ornaments. The entertainment was pre- sented by the senior members of Double Sextette. The Rev. Jack Scott was the guest speaker, and he made it obvious that he was a native of Texas who was only visiting New Orleans for the lVlar- di Gras. The evening was one of the most memorable nights for the seniors duringthe year. King Arthur, Sir Lancelot and the maidens ofthe court appeared in their gay apparel on the night of March 19 for the Junior Ban- quet. Decorations for the event included a drawbridge entrance, brightly decorated tables, and walls covered with shining armor. Entertainment for the evening consisted of the songs lf Ever l Would Leave You and Camelot from the musical production Camelot, which was the theme for the banquet. John Burch, psychology instructor, talked on Some Psycho-Dynamic Impli- cations of Camelot. The banquet was an exciting and memor- able event forthejunior class. Banquets Entertainment at the Junior Banquet was provided by the students who presented a comedy skit involving the characters King Arthur, Lady Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot. Candidates not pictured are: Peggy Bell and Me- lissa Bell. Ivy Chain Queen Each year the dormitories nominate from their membership candidates for the titles of Ivy Chain and Commencement Queen. From these candidates the student body elects one senior who reigns as Ivy Chain Queen and one junior who, until this year, reigned as Commencement Queen. This year, however, the junior queen's title was changed to Rose Queen. Originally, the Commencement Queen was honored during the commencement pageant, which was discontinued several years ago. Since this is no longer a function of the junior queen the title was altered to Rose Queen, which sym- bolizes the roses which are given by seniors to juniors as tokens of friendship during the lvy Chainceremony. And Attendants Lora CLollij Zander and Sally Appel Shelley Garvin The senior candidates for Ivy Chain Queen werezi Dede Allen, Judy Cul- Iey, Virginia Gordon, Elizabeth QBetsyJ Lamar, Martha Lybarger, Janet lVlcDonald, Louise Paris, Nancy Turner, Becky Turner, KathyWilliams.
