MBU N950 Christian 4 A junior College jbr Columbia, M z Z A... A . Chrz'stz'an Is cz Sjyecial Place . . Hello! I have been asked to be the narrator for the Christian Col- lege story. Legend has given me a title which completely over- shadows the importance of my real name. I am the Gray Lady. I was not acquainted with Christian during her first years, but my spirit became inextricably linked with the college during the Civil War. I have watched Christian's story unfolding for one hundred years and it is truly a special one. On January 18, 1851, the Missouri legislature chartered the first college for women west of the Mississippi. Christian Female Col- lege was the realization of the hopes of men like D. P. Hender- son, T. M. Allen, and James Shannon. These zealous leaders of the Christian Church and supporters of education created a col- lege which would give women an education equal to that which men received at the University of Missouri. Though the majority of the founders belonged to the Christian Church, they stated in the charter that ... no sectarian influence whatever will be exertedf' 2 + X W W w l I l 1 1 v l r l l x l A Slbecial To guide this new college, the founders looked for a man that had the right grit. This man was John Augustus Williams. In those days it took grit to propose higher education for women. Many felt women were either incapable of grasp- ing advanced ideas or that women needed only in- struction which would enable them to raise a family and run an efficient household. These ideas President Williams sought to change. On April 16, 1851, President Williams delivered his inaugural address to an enthusiastic crowd gathered in frontlof the courthouse. The next morning he waited for the first students. Elated with expectancy, I went early to matriculate the throng. .. . In an hour, all had assembled: seven girls! In those pre-Civil War years girls came to Chris- tian by steamboat and stagecoach. When the girls arrived the first year, Christian had no dormitories nor even a school building. The girls boarded in the homes of prominent Columbia families. Uni- versity boys also boarded in these homes, so many girls were lost to marriage. A one-room building on Hitt Street served as a temporary school build- ing. The college soon purchased a brick mansion belong- ing to Dr. James Bennett, a Columbia physician. This dwelling, now known as the Conservatory, was near the northern limits of Columbia. i , l H -L as -jf ' viz'-iLg., 1- 3:1-' 7- ff -' we - la 1 Q Zam i, 3 ff l? 2,,9f:- 1 M 5. Christian College girls have heard the sounds of three major American wars. Battles in the 186O,s brought the war to the Christian doorstep 3 in 1918 there was the Liberty Loan parade, during the 194O,s, dances with the men home on leave Students were expected to wear' the cheap plain uniform. For winter plain worsted dresses, hoods and white aprons. For sum mer: lawn dresses, sun bonnets, and aprons Some interesting regulations set down in the circular sent out by the college in eluded: flj No pupil shall visit any public place except by permission' CQD no pupil shall receive the attentions of gallants' and 35 no young lady shall make any purchases without express permission from parent or teacher. President Williams stressed the high educa tional standards in the Circular of the Chris tian Female College of June 28 1851. Those who cannot, for the time being, abstract their minds from the fascinations of society, or who aspire merely to superficial or fash- ionable education are earnestly advised to seek elsewhere. . . . The course of study for the school year was to give the students a thorough and ex- tensive course in the Mathematics, in Nat- ural Science, in Belles-lettres, in Natural His- tory, in Language and in Philosophy. In those days examinations were given in public and were avidly attended by the townspeople. During their first public ex- amination the girls composed, extemporane- ously, verses from subjects given them by members of the audience The girls assured Christians future when they came through this examination triumphantly 5 9 . . . . . .. , s . . . . f f 7 1 f f My ff ,WW , W WW' 'G f MMM 1 f , f I I W W W W! ff! ,, W WQ,Z :.f':f 1. Rogers was president of the college at this time and tried to keep the college neutral by banning all newspapers from the campus. Often girls would gather together and talk over the news from home. One girl wrote in her diary: Our glorious Ship Union is a ground. Her traitorous pilot Lincoln with the rest of her crew have be- trayed her passengers and now we are beating against the ter- rible shoals of Revolution. God protect us . . .U During the Civil War Christian became an isolated world. Girls who had stayed in spite of the war led a very routine existence. Every morning at five a hired man came into the room and built a fire in the pot-bellied stove. After dressing, girls took unchaperoned walks over the college campus and then returned to study for an hour before breakfast. Food for the meals was grown on the campus, and girls were given a hoe and seeds to plant. The diary of a young student shows how reluctantly the girls started the routine Mondays: Early to rise as usual. That gong is never tardy. It is still dark yet I am dressed and ready to begin the duties of the week. Oh how steep and arduous is the hill of knowledge? One summerday in 1862 the girls of Christian had their closest contact with the war. Union soldiers stationed in Columbia, cer- tain nothing dangerous would happen, failed to post sentries on the roads leading into the town. Suddenly a detachment of Confederate soldiers rushed down Broadway, stormed the jail, freed the prisoners, and escaped out of Columbia past Christian College. Under the guidance of Joseph Rogers, Christian came out of the Civil War prosperous and academically strong. His roles as teacher, president, and trustee truly made him worthy of the title Father of Christian College. Fashion in the l880,s dictated that bangs be pasted on the forehead in flat ringlets held in place by gummy quince seed and covered with a scarf. The girls appeared at breakfast in this manner so that their bangs would be stylishly curly by dinner time. ' 3 F M Z 52 :Aux l l A K s 2 F , Q X , i l 1 1 Times were changing, however, and a new era was to find a woman president, Louella St. Clair, a vivacious and capable young woman who took over the job of president in 1893. Her theme was expansion. In 1900 St. Clair Hall was completed. During its construction Mrs. St. Clair had each girl carry a brick as she left her classes. The auditorium was erected in 1903, the classroom building, Dorsey Hall, was completed in 1911. Andrew Carnegie contributed 325,000 to the project. The advent of the First World War halted the am- bitious building program for a time. The girls spent a great deal of their time contributing to the war ef- fort. They knitted, rolled bandages, and rode floats in Liberty Loan Parades. They also adopted a war orphan and raised money for the Armenians. After the war President St. Clair continued her build- ing program. In 1920 Missouri Hall was completed. The swimming pool was dedicated in 1919. Not only did this energetic woman change outward appear- ances, but she also gave Christian something just as valuable-traditions. The first Ivy Chain was held by the class of 1900. Perhaps modeled after the daisy chain of Vassar, the chain was made of flowers in the early years. In 1914 a new tradition was begun: the May Queen with all the pageantry retained in the Commencement Pageant of today. Christian has had its famous and not-so-famous as stu- dents, faculty, and administrators. Singer Jane Froman attended in the 1920's. Riding classes were taught by noted Missouri horsewoman Mrs. Claude Drew. Former student Artie Mason Carter established the Hollywood Bowl in 1922. 543-if.142:-i-1-isp.:-.fs.Q:il-gg..-Zg5f1g3f1-Q-1..-Zig.:-Q,' ','.',.-'l Lg 'fi-L-51,.fi-QqZ51g.1i5 ...l.PQ,I5Z, 5..Lg,Z Sjyecial People President St. Clair also started the idea that a Chris- tian girl was special: You could always tell a Chris- tian girl from others on the streets. With the advent of the tumultuous ,2O's, Edgar Lee became the President of Christian. During these postwar years there was a loosening of conventions and convictions. The first reform the president promoted was the Student Government Association with pri- vate elections and student-made rules and punish- I1'lC1'1tS. To provide a Hcommunityl' spirit, President Lee formed 'many campus organizations. The most noted was the sextette initiated in 1920 by Anna Froman. A variety of clubs centered around languages, art, and science were begun. Every girl was expected to par- ticipate. The first horsemanship class was set up un- der the direction of Mrs. Claude Drew, a noted Mis- souri horsewoman. The Microphone was established in 1927. Another woman who greatly influenced the life of Christian College was Mrs. Marion Hertig, who in the first few days of school got everyone involved in activ- ities which would keep them from being homesick. She helped to establish many traditions such as the Line- age Club, which began in 1930, and the grand march at the Halloween party. Her realistic approach and her delight in fun made the girls remember her long after. their college days. She became a tradition her- self. Yet change there has been and will be, and the next two decades in the life of Christian College promise drastic changes on the face of the campus. Certainly today there are many girls at C will go on to become recognized for their achievements in the areas of art, science however, at the moment all the girls at 1 very special. They are friends. Working s playing together they are creating memori days. E a'z't01'z'al Stajjf Stephanie Rigdon is the editor of the 1965 Ivy Chain. Producing this book has required the infinite patience, time, and efforts of many people. Although the size and number of books to be printed had already been determined, the editor, layout editor, and advisors journeyed to Hannibal in early Oc- tober to talk with yearbook consultants and to tour the print- ing company. ' Then the editor dehnitely decided upon the theme for this year's book-a historical approach to Christian through the guidance of the Gray Lady. The theme is evident especially in the cover design, the opening section, and the art work. With the allotment of the pages and the approach of the monthly deadlines, the editors of the activities, organizations, junior and senior sections had completed their respective sec- tions. They were aided by the general staff which drew the lay- outs and wrote and typed all copy. Mr. Dan Hoagland of the faculty and Mr. Earl Speidel of Chio's Studio provided the photographs. Procuring the patronage of local businessmen was the job of the advertising staff. 68 'c,,.SCf ---f The Ivy Chain staff is very grateful to the sponsors of this year's Ivy Chain.
