J ' ' ' Dr. James Conelese Miller Dr. and Mrs. Miller in their home. l On November 16, 1956, the death of Dr. James Conelese Miller was felt as a great loss by many persons. He had held his po- sition for nearly nineteen years and was loved and honored by all who knew him. We miss him now, but we still have the example set for us by his life. He gave his best years to us, the students of Christian College, because he realized the importance of knowledge as a working material of life. Because of his kindliness and insight into the problems of learning, he was able to smooth the way toward enlightenment for thousands of young women. The greatest memorial we can give him is to keep alive the ideals for which he lived. With this memorial in mind, we dedicate the book representing this important year of our lives to Truth, hoping that all our following years will be equally filled with accomplishment. i I !j'r rv W: I!! 5 VY' '1 , jx 4 The office of President of Christian College was not long empty. ln De- cember, 1957, Dr. Kenneth H. Freeman arrived from Geneseo, New York to fill the vacancy. Under his competent leadership, the students of Christian continue to grow - both in the ways set down by our rich traditions and in the fresh new ways of the modern world. To our president, Dr. Freeman, and his family, we extend an enthusi- astic welcome, we know their stay here will be a profitable one for us. Above, Dr. Freeman pictured in his office. One hundred and forty girls enioy the luxury of having the tearoom, dining room, and Dor- sey Hall connected to their residence. These girls need never brave the Missouri elements to attend classes or dinner. This year St. Clair boasts all three iunior officers, senior Halloween queen and her share of club presidents. 1 Mention must be given also to St. Clair's own personal guiding spirit - the Grey Lady. At twelve o'clock every night she walks the halls watching over her slumbering girls. As each class graduates, it adds a living mem- ory to St. Clair by the planting of a sprig of ivy beside her walls. And every girl takes away a memory of what St. Clair meant to her. ' missouri hall The spirit of happiness and good will seems to float in the atmosphere of Missouri Hall. Perhaps it's 'because of Mom Jay's loving, kind attention, perhaps it's because Davey and the other council members are never too busy to be of help, perhaps it's because everyone has a smile and a cheery hello for everyone else. - Or perhaps the alcoves, the pink train station, the rec room, the foods lab, the clothing lab, and the dignity and beauty of the French parlor produce that friendly atmosphere. Events during the year, such as the first surprise party, Down on the Farm, the annual Christmas coffee, the surprise visit from Santa, the Home Ec Club's spring and fall style shows, the senior spring dance, and the numerous other parties and good times, also help to make the memories of Mo lasting ones At any rate, whether it be the building itself or the people therein, that special feeling seems to soar through the soul of every Mo Hall girl. C., but ten Cathies feel iust as for- tunate to live in the White House on Christian College Avenue. They enioy the feeling of being part of a family as well as having many conveniences. One of the most popular spots, the mail box, is right outside their front door. They have washing machines and dryers in their basement - so no lugging of heavy clothes across the street for them. The infirmary is handy, too, not to mention the walks across campus in the beauty of early morning. The fun, the conveniences, and their first lady, Mrs. Harlan, add up to a wonderful home. 68 'im llughe hall From the first noisy hall meeting and the first sing- ing of .... for one and all are we, Hughes girls are a group that cannot be surpassed for enthusi- asm. Hughes newness, special conveniences fsuch as a phone on every floor and the buzzer systeml, and attractive rooms give Cathies good reason to be proud of their temporary home. Her recreation room, the largest on campus, seems to inspire par- ties, and the efficient teamwork made possible by Hughes capacity of only sixty-six assures the ac- complishment of great things when her residents go to work. The spring auction, the profits of which are used when Hughes plays host at an all-school party, is an example of Hughes ingenuity and her own kind of tradition. New ideas sponsored by this year's hall committee were a hall scrapbook and bulletin board decora- tions that changed with the seasons. Proof of Hughes' enthusiasm was also in her number of campus leaders-including the student body presi- dent, senior class president, Vesper Board president, co-editor of the Microphone, and the College Widow editor. Hughes girls will never forget the good times and the close friendships of their hallp and their opinion that Hughes is the best at old CC will never change. Mrs. George B. This is the source of those problems we have been having. It is what we laughed be- hind in the tea room and hid when even our roommates might be looking. It is what we wrote notes about in class and discussed hurriedly as we passed in the halls. And all this was in anticipation of one day, the day when you could know our secrets and perhap-s share our enthusiasm for the ideas we put on these pages. For nine months it has been our book, but during this time we have worked only to make it belong to you when the time came. We have succeeded only if each of you finds here some of what you want to remember always. Many fine people have helped us to make this Widow what it is. The people of the Newsfoto Publishing Company were not only our printers but our friendly guides all along the way. No matter what the time of day or night, Mr. Bob Ghio was ready at a moment's notice to take the activity and organization pic- tures you have iust seen. Westoff's Studio made the class and faculty portraits, which will enable you to remember your friends' faces so vividly, and Julie's Studio made the perfect portraits of the queens you chose. Finally, the business firms in thetcommunity supported our book through their p-urchases of advertis- ing space. Our thanks to all these people and to you, too, Cathies, for your cooperation in meeting picture schedules and in lending us your snapshots. Now the time has come for us to say goodbye and wish the editors of next year good luck, Here's hoping that the staff of 1958 finds as much pleasure in its duties as we have found in ours.
