I -Excerpts from The Mike Page 101 . PHUPHEEY The year-19653 the place-Christian College Auditorium, the time-a September morifingg the occasion-the inauguration of a new faculty. A hushed stillness comes over the audience. This is a great day-an unusual day. For the first time in the history of the school, the entire faculty is made up of graduates of one class-the class of I 1945. Other members of that great class are present to witness the ceremonies. Still others have been pouring wires, calls, and messages into the office. The newly appointed president of the college, Cay Howland, stands before the speaker's stand. The music starts, and the new faculty congas sedately down the aisle. Leading the procession is Margaret Brown, Dean of Women, followed by the Dean of Faculty, Mary Frances Hunter, and Elizabeth Hutcherson, Head of the Conservatory. Then come Lucy Garton, Chemistry head, and Jayne Cox, Botany professor. Marge Groves, clad in flowing robes, is the new Math department head, and Lolly Strong is teaching Psy- chology. Pat Cartwright, Art department, is followed by members of the Conservatory: Eva Sue Fidler, voice, Grace Fisher, harp and violin, and Lois Adams, piano. l Suddenly the line is broken-there seems to be some confusion! But it's only Billye Abbott, riding the bicycle she inherited when she took over Mrs. Keeleyis job. Behind her walk Deanie Ballew, dramag and Vivian Alexander, voice and diction. The librarian, Billie Browning, is next in line, beside the l nurse, Lynda Cathey. The Spanish department is now headed by Bobbie Cook, famous for her Cook Tours To Mexico. After her comes Wilma Bicknell, national authority on Mar- riage and the Family. Andy Anderson, noted economist, is teaching at Christian while her husband is on a secret niis- sion in Africa. She is followed by Estelle Stewart, director of the orchestra. i Betty Hoegh, head of the dance studio, glides down the aisle beside Betty Wickersham, owner of the Christian Stables. QHer assistants, Shirley Blattner, Eleanor Shannon, 'lk and Frannie Houlton, are responsible for the improved stables.j i Marily Bowman, head of the Home Ec. Department, leads her experts, Dot Young, who has won various prizes for her unusual sewing methods, and Betty Lasley, recently voted Amer- icais Best Cook. This department is now responsible for the meals served in the dining-room, supervised by the new dietician, Maxine Falor. Margie Hood is in control of the Gym, -assisted by Betty Crowe, sports director, and Jan Cary, physical fitness instructor. The school now furnishes the gym clothes, designed by Hood, and consisting of pink tights and purple, turtle-neck sweaters. A Howland introduces and welcomes the new members of the faculty, and then adjourns the assembly. Everyone wanders over to St. Clair parlors, by way of the escalators, which were installed with the new building. QThe old hall of our days burned to the ground in 1955.5 There we are greeted by the house mother, Helen Black, still as healthy as ever! She's assisted at the tea-table by the other house mothers. Jane Mullen, of Missouri hall Cwho insists that she still can't smell a thingb, launches into a description of the Mo. alcoves, that are now glassed in for you-know-what. Q Page 1l72 l 1 l l LLLL l She is interrupted by the Hughes' house mother, Patty Evans, who brags about the other wing being added to Hughes, with the new third-floor ballroom. Joy Arn, who is still watching out for the Annex, and Sue Arnold, Cottage hostess, enter the conversation, and we learn all about the new air-field on back campus. Thelma Kitch is the instructor, and has some two hundred students, among them Mrs. Hertig, who is still running CC! We walk over to Mary Cleland, Permissions Secretary, to hear about Johnny, who is at home on the farm. She is talking to Glenna Graham, assistant Dean of Women. Clt seems that Brown needed an Hexpertv to listen to the girls' troublesj M. F. Johnson, Admissions Secretary, informs us that CC will have the largest enrollment in history this year. - 4 Danny Gregory, who puts up the mail, tells us that the V , 'Q 1 book store is still the same-no kleenex! Pancy dx ' l l ' l Allton, a second Amelia Earhart, is also snapped. Tance Boyer, college receptionist and cashier, an- nounces that there will be a short style show. Kreig Jenkins, who writes, directs, and announces for her own radio programs, is the commentator. She introduces Pinky Walter, head of the new Powers School, and mother of five boys. Her beautiful models, Shirley Jackson, Pat Wharton, and Jamie Branch, wear the latest creations of glass. Dulce Watson, concert soloist, beats out an unusual composition on the piano. The vocalist is Stella Melton, night club entertainer, and the words were written by Pat Burnett, who now gets paid to write songs about CC life. F A few more members of the Faculty arrive, and are introduced. Martha Zigler, of the French department, is accompanied by Janie Swinney, who teaches Texas jitter-bugging. Eleanor Nelson, Home Ec. expert, enters with Katherine Brummall, of the commercial department. Le N elle Buckley, instructor in character acting, flies in and does a quick skit for the ladies. The program now gets under way. Lou Nightwine, star of the Hour of Charm program, sings My Phil, and is followed by Doris Clarkson, another Gracie Allen. Buzz Bannon, noted for her dry humor, and Katy Kelly, always the funny-man, give a short skit-followed by the June Byers-Sis Cannonsister act Flea Gosney, Hollywood screen star, and Bobette Nash, currently' starring in the Broadway hit, Joan of Arc, stage a scene from Macbeth. Then Trudy Whiteley lectures on How to Be a Red- head and Like It, and Marguerite Carr plays a piano solo. The lighting is supervised by Judy Nash, the only lady light expert in Hollywood. Her best effects were used for Val X Loucks, sensational feature-dancer in Chicago. Kreig also introduces several famous people, many of whom hold national titles. Davis Lowery was recently chosen Na- tional Hiking champ, and Ann Mapes won the title of F an-Tan champion. Ruth Mollaun has held the women's title of Hot Pilot for ten years, and Betty Duncan was recently elected ' Queen of the Small but Mighty society. Grade school boys voted Nancy Hart The Face We'd Like Most To See on a Valentinef' and Ginny Armstrong was elected to the Healthy Cuth- berts' Club. l l l Page 103 l Several noted authors and lecturers are also in the audience: Cliff Carroll, author of Why Do People Ask Me.So Many Questions9 g Ruth Kotsrean, The Merits of St. Louis for Week- ends , Why Don't I Grow Upiw, by Pat Walker, Mickey Meinzer, who wrote Everything Happens to Mel , and Georgann Potts, author of The Good in Kentucky. 4 Q The lecturers include such notables as Jill Look Wide Awake and Alive Chapman, Mary Louise How To Fall ln and Out of Love Dawson, Elaine Stand On Your Own Two Feet Hedrick, 9 f J Wynne How To Buckle Down Saupeg and Bev Wall, The :Art J Q gfljfr of Making Decisionsf' y P Various telegrams and phone calls were received from other members of the class who were unable to attend. Carolyn Agee, 6,4 5 bone specialist, sent her congratulations, as did her assistant, Mary ,gf Braswell. Doris Young, Missouri politician, phoned, as did Mary l 3 Ann Glaub, who runs a chain of grocery stores. Barbara Downs, ,fs matron in a children's nursery, and Marilyn Hesse, flight nurse J between Caracas, Venezuela, and Kansas City, both wired their ffl congratulations. l Ardyth Hellner, typical New York Clubwomanf' and lher rival, Cherie Lou Davis, wrote letters to be read at the meeting. Jo Graham, Congresswoman, wired her greetings, as well as those of her secretary, Jean Charlton. Ruth Ann Johnson, designer of women's hats, sent various new creations for display in the style show. Several members of the class are engaged in occupations that resulted from their talents in the finer arts. Joyce Hoberecht is vocalist on a Childrenis Hour radio program, and Norma Jean Danks teaches voice in her home town. Jean Hourigan is head of the music department at Hickman High, and Jean Stewart runs a dance studio here in Columbia. Mugs Scherer started a Children's Theatre, which is competing with the Little Theatre that Pat Preston founded. Helen MoCarley teaches voice at C. C., and Theo Lyons is dancing for Arthur Murray. Mary Lyday spends her time raising horses, while Harriet Mattingly is a very successful business woman. Some late-comers arrive, and we hurry to greet them. The Hill twins are still arguing about who looks the oldest, and Betty, Carol, and Marjorie Jones keep insisting that they are not line of the Jones girls! Nancy Johnston has just returned from a trip to Alaska, where she tried in vain to establish her identity as an Eskimo. Annette Faulconer, an Army wife, is seen talking to Alice Owsley, who has just completed another of her brilliant experiments. Suzy Boeder, who is the best dress designer in New York, but 'cstill confused, confers with Mary Ann Shelton, who is talking about her latest marriage. Georgene Seaman, socialite horse- woman, enters with Jo Leavitt, star of a ballet group in Hollywood. Baby Heyl surprises us with a picture of her three six-foot sons. A l The meeting is ended by Howland reading several letters from grads who were unablel to return for the reunion. Corinne Chandler, Jackie Lindley, Dot Louden, and Dorothy Woody all report t.hat they are happily married, as is Helen Tilley, and Vir- I ginia Dodson declares that she's the happiest married woman in m l Muskogee. Anna Lee Glenn has been coaching her .children in A 'J J ridingfsince they could walk, and Elizabeth Itsclmer plans to send - f V . i' 4 I her three daughters to Christian. One A l of the most outstanding wives is Marcheta lvens, who married 'Z y General Keith Simmon--the Marine who took an uninhabited I AQ island singlehanded! - Now the crowd gradually thins out. Soon the parlors are ut Q g empty once again of the class of 1945. Some will see more of Q' .J i A y school, others will never see Christian campus again! But all W-c 'f ,f2 will remember C.
