The 'Twelfth Night Club was organized on a -democratic basis in 1916 when all sororities were abolished. The Campus Sunday School was organized the fall of 1922 by Reverend Haus- halter and President E, D. The most friendly co-operation exists between the two branches and interesting exchanges of talent in special numbers for opening exercises are frequent. r NQYES WARE DRUMMOND Page Sixly- nine 1 I is 2? VVe're all camp-fire bound. How we love playing a peppy base ball game, and lying full length on the cool grass by the brook! WVHS anything ever more temptingly delicious than hot coffee, baked beans, rolls, cheese, apples, pickles, potato-chips-and ginger bread? No! A second onslaught charges against the kitchen squad, and carries away every crumb. Now quite content, we gather, and march hand in hand around the camp-fire singing. Its high red flame lights up the happy faces in the twilight. Once more we sing the dear songs of old C. C. It brings to mind countless memories, most vivid of which is the memory of the Christian College Masqued Ball of October 31. The gym, in a setting of bright leaves and lanterns, became a softly lighted stage Whereon a scene of revelry was played by the representatives of all climes and ages. Beauty, grace, and mystery surrounded each-merry figure. each lending charm and color to the whole. A Grand March, stately and majestic, opened the dance. First a column in pairs, then fours, then eights, swayed rythmically up the, length of the gym. As the last meas- ure of the march melted into a strain of jazz, joy burst into being, and the dance was on. The entertainino' feature of the evening G cr 77 - - D - - - was a series of stunts. ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, given by the State Clubs. Spark Plug and Barney Google, Young Lochinvarf' and many others appeared to call forthgales of mirthufrom the merry-makers. Page Ninety-two l i l Dances never ceased, even during the Heats. Here you caughta glimpse of Chu-Chin-Chow and Senor Don Fernando, munching a pop-corn ball and drinking cider while in the clutches of a foxtrot. There, you 'saw George Vtfashington and a charming little Senorita making the most of their time combining a waltz with pumpkin pie. I Home, Sweet Home, howeversweet, brought cries of disapproval. A pre- monition of the fun ended, was answered by three pert winks of the lights. One was sur- rounded by a great moving mass of color with generous splashes of black, made up of the beautifully gowned girls on the arms of their guests. The pleasure of making new acquaintances was enhanced by the evident fact that everyone was having a wonderful time. Needless to say, the bulletin board over the Week-end bore proof of an increase in Saturday and Sunday night dates. The friendly hand clasp, with merry Word and Warm smile, that signifies real graciousness, was extend- ed by the Twelfth Night Club and student officers and Faculty members in the re- ceiving line. They were: Dorothy Yale Wells, Margaret Hall, Vera Tepe, Mildred Packwood, Elizabeth Burlingame, Lyndall Fisher, Alma Gray Hill, Constance Boyer, Dorothy Chapman, Helen Mullin, Marie VVare, Annabelle Bagby, Imogene Cox and Ercie Noyes. Dainty gifts, candy, horns, and all manner of costly ornaments, changed hands,-as the venders called their wares. The Senior colors, yellow and white, line all the sidewalks on the cam- pus, and the juniors even dare to decorate the water tower with their purple and gold. Excitement runs high throughout the day and at eight o'clock the doors of the gym are opened. The junior pep squad, lead by their little mascot appears. What a din from the sidelines! As soon as they finish their yells, the floor is given to the Seniors. Behold the young gallants and dainty misses in yellow and white with their mas- cot dancing capriciously before them! The Seniors then portray a court scene in which Miss Junior is being tried. This is followed by a Jackie Coogan dance by the Senior mascot. 4 ' The whistle calls the girls from their fun and again the struggle is on. Each team is determined to Win but when the whistle blows the scoreboard says Seniors-27 Juniors-13 The cheer leaders jump into the center of the floor, giving yells for their op- ponents and the old gym echoes and reechoes with yells first for the defeated juniors, then for the victorious Seniors. The second game, equally interesting and exciting as the first completed the Basket Ball season and determined the Senior championship. LIUNIOR PEP SQUAD e l i Page One Hzmzlferi Eleven l 1 A GYMNASIUM LLASS VOLLEY BALL BASE BALL C Spring Sports There are many sports beside basket ball and hockey which are of interest to Christian College girls. Baseball has become the rival of tennis for popular favor on the campus this spring. At the first of the season the girls played indoor baseballin the gym classes. Later in the season practice was begun on the outdoor diamond. The class teams were chosen and the match game proved to be one of the most exciting events of the year. In the regular gymnasium classes both indoor and outdoor volley ball form an interesting part of the class period. Hiking is a sport in which all girls can participate. It provides an opportunity to explore the many beautiful places of interest around Columbia. The old covered bridge and Lover's Leap are favorite objectives for the energetic hikers. Many girls have hiked the maximum one hundred miles, thus earning points toward their letter. 1 Page One flunafreci T lzirteen vi ,+V ww ff ? Tennis It is in the Spring that tennis comes in for its share of attention. Tennis is es- pecially popular this spring because of the great improvement made in the courts. The courts are filled from 5:30 in the morning until the study hall bell calls the players in. A The annual tournament is held at the end of every school year. Both single and double entries are made and the final contest is anticipated with great interest. Max The Bulletin Board - Only a vast expanse of rough brown burlap, littered here and there by gaily decorated posters, or insignificant scraps of paper, but how much of our school life centers around the silent information bureau! Dinner time finds us pushing and shoving and rudely elbowing our way through the crowd that surrounds the bulletin board, that we too, may eagerly pursue the notices posted thereon. 'Firmly tacked in the center of the board is a large and important looking sign which announces to the world at large that the St. Cecelia Club will entertain with an after dinner recital. So impressed are we with this information that we completely overlook the insignificant scrap of paper pinned beneath it which earnest- ly requests, in a school girl scrawl, that the party who borrowed Lou Gunn's red hat will please return it at once. ' Certain terse suggestions that the Dean would like to see so and so strike terror to the heart of the culprit, while the statement of a Student Council Meeting is suf- ficient to cause even the meekest and mildest to pause and reflect suspiciously over her whole year's past history. A ' For real human interest and excitement the telephoneucalls are to be recomf mended. They are always greeted with unrestrained expression of joy or dismay, and woe be unto the young man who, in his ignorance, dares put in two calls. Never, so the story goes, has this been done undetected. Verily, it is an easy mat- ter to keep a check on onels rival by means of this trusty guide. Running a close second to this as an excitement producer is the special list. Of course, there is some satisfaction in seeing a public proclamation that your lover has squandered a whole ten cents -that you may receive his letter sooner. At rare intervals the thrilling news that T here will be no swimming classes today receives a hearty welcome which reveals beyond a doubt that even the would-be mermaids rejoice in the fact that the life of their marcels may be pro- longed somewhat, even if it is at the expense of their education. A bit of Botany paper, bravely offering a scarf or a pair of gloves for sale is a suitable warning as to what happens when one carelessly and speedily spends her allowance, but in direct opposition to the effect created is the tempting sugges- tion that New Blonde Satin Pumps are in at Miller Bros. We pause, undecided between the two influences, hesitate and are lost. Mentally we resolve to charge a. pair-just this once. Q . l Announcements of club meetings serve only to fill you with an irksome sense of responsibility, and you wonder vaguely what chance there is to cut, but the word cut conjures up in your mind such vivid and horrible possibilities that you im- mediately dismiss it from your mind to turn to the more agreeable pastime of re- garding the list of afternoon dates. A comment upon them made in an undertone to the person next to you is quite permissible, in fact, customary. Slowly your gaze wanders over the whole display and you find there every phase of your life and activities. So engrossed you are in the present though, that you are entirely unaware that in future life you will look back with longing on the time when concrete information on a subject you were interested in could be ob- tained by a mere inspection of the C. C. Bulletin Board. Page One lfumlred Nineteen K n ,, i ' fx . . r i ,v Qilf np 1 , UH 1 f :via 24: ' 5 5af+'7J ' by -'l 'pl St,,,-.+ 5ff 'rSa 3 if 'L sv.ff 5 iii: SL f- . A heated debate was held in Mrs. Eikenberryls English class yesterday on the subject Resolved: that Auto Riding should be prohibited at Chris- tian. The affirmative team was composed of Allyne Waller, Nell Jones, and jill Maas. p The negative team consisted of Con- stance Mayens, Carol Rutledge, and Lucille- Cameron. Miss- Mayens made a particularly good point when she said in a loud voice, 'fWe go auto riding with dates at home, don't we? Then why should we not be permitted to ride here P The judges were Miss Julia Spalding, Miss Ann D. Gibbs, and Miss Cather- ine Blanton. The decision was two to one in favor of the negative. DECLARES BENCHES TOE BE PLACED ON C. C. CAMPUS Miss Julia Spalding announced yes- terday in a private interview with our reporter that hereafter dates will be permitted on the campus. It isn't fair, she is reported as say- ing, for the poor dears to have to do their sparking in a crowded parlor, and I shall see to it that this heinous crime is stopped. She stated that in the near future benches would be placed on the campus at intervals of about 25 feet, in order that the students might not be in- terrupted in their perusal of the little god Love. HI never realizedf' said Miss -Spald- ing in closing the interview, what a mistake our former method was until I read the 'Philosophy of Love' by Elinor Glynn, and now I am convinced that our new way is the only way. T he girls are not taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the school infirmaryf' according to Mrs. Mary Gilliam, nurse. Many a day passes without a single girl coming to me for medical aid, she said sadly. I fear that they are working too hard and do not take the proper care of themselves. ' In the course of her conversation, Mrs. Gilliam stated that if the girls could only be persuaded to go to the in- firmary when they are tired and do not wish to attend classes, or on the days when they have tests, the school would feel that they had accomplished a great deal. A ' As it is they struggle through their classes half dead, and never dream of coming to the infirmary unless they are conducted here on a stretcher, she end- ed with a rueful smile. And I've writ for you all a sweet little pome And sed that I'm glad that you're soon goin' home. Now donit up and get mad as if you hadn't good sense 'Cause when all's sed and done, I mean no offense. The reason I'm glad, my dear little dames Is 'cause Iive had sech a time a learnin' your names. I'll tell 'you right now these names git my goat, They twist in my tongue and they stick in my throat. Take-the alphabet thru from the A's to the Z's, To recollect all them names is a pretty tight squeeze. Now think of such names as Hoelsher and Hurt, Broverman, Blount, Blakey and Burt. It's a good thing by names ye don't save your souls, Fer what would become of Blount, Boykin, and Bowles? The C's make you wish you'd never been born, I h For there's Curtright and Courtright, Craver, and Chorn. Cadle, Charleton, and Cotter are names quite absurd, And is it Crisler of Crislar? I never have heard. And there's Cameron, Collins, and Campbell to make matters worse, And I only know Childers because she writes verse. The S's are more than a teacher can bear, Schlicter, Scholler, Schouten, Stubblefield, Skaer. , And for Swedish there's Olson, and for Scotch there's Adair, And for French there's Richard and an Indian is VVare. There are high brows named Boyer, and Carson, and Brooks, Drummond, Mitchell, and Smiley who make E in their Books. Arnold, Hamilton, Macy, Bohannon, and Blades May also be remembered because they make grades. The M's are a mouthful when all's said and done, Mullinax, McGlothin, Montgomery and Munn, And some others beat anything ever know in C. -C. Marriott, Mayens, Mereness, McBee. And that girl named Meaders, I mean what I say, To remember her name I have to think hay. And that Mary Gardner, to remember her name I think of a singer of opera fame. Page One flumirezi Tufeuty-seven The three syllable names confuse anyone, Winchester, Stevenson, and Marie Ellington. VVhen I think of such names as Pearsall, and Pipe, Tepe, Tatum, and Tomlinson and all of that type, Iim thankful for names that 'donit sound like a myth, Good old Morgan, and jones, and Snider, and Smith. I tell you it's enough to make you have fits To have to learn names like Faubion and Fritts. From Frazer to Fraser my heads in a whirl, And how to pronounce Anthis you have to go ask the girl. To get the ROB's right, it just isn't fun, For there's Robison, Robnett, two Roberts, Robertson. Reid, Bailey, and Guffy we know pretty well, Can't help it, you see, the way they all yell. But the names just alike, they tax my brain cells, All of them Coxes, and VVells, VVells, Wells, VVells, Wells. And all of them 'VVilson, and three of them Neals, Two Hayses, two WVrights, one Fields and one Shields, And two girls are named Hart, and two are named Hall, Three Reed and two Reiley, not spelled alike at all. There's both Hubbell, and Hummel and a girl named Gil Maas, And then there's a Dawson, and also a Dawes. We're used to the seniors, they've been here a year, But some of their names do sound mighty queer. For there's Mullin, and Mullins, Puryear, Packwood and Gunn, And Oblander's the queerest name under the sun. And some of their first names just puzzle the Deans, Idita, Juanita, and all of them jeans. Some names are not hard, they're just a job lot, Perkins, and Perry, Mills, Major, and Scott. In this list come Gilmore, Stanley, and Moyleg All of them pronounced according to Hoyle, And Stewart and Talbot, and Waller, and Denny, Easy enuf to remember if not mixed with so many, I But when jumbledin with Haynie, Henry, and Hext, Hocker, and Haldeman, you wonder what next! Barron, and Bagby, Breed, Beasley and May, Andrews and Davis, easy enuf you will say. Ashbrook, and Crawford, VVillis, and Clark, Anyone could pronounce these names in the dark, Page One Hfzfzdred Twenty-eight But when thrown hit or miss with WVhitmarsh, and Noyes Fisher, Finley, and Flynt, you quite lose your poise. You get Hogan for Hogue, and Heckman for Hill, Kirkland for Kirby, and you're mixed fit to killg You say Edwards for Eley, and Kimball for Key, And McKinney you say when you mean McAfee, You think Reily is Rutledge, and Nixon is Nash, , You get Warren for W'eaver, and your mind goes to smash- In despair you grab your old thinking cap, And learn cHamilton by ham and Sappington by sap. When you've learned Darnell by darn, and Holeman by hole, There are dozens of others that still vex your soul. Then Hansonuand Hardy you think you can catch, H When Lindsay and Larson get mixed up in the batch. And Israel's odd, and Quisenberry queer, , And Mairs, Mathews, and Mosby throw your mind out of gear You're so glad you've known Froman and Lib Burlingame Ever since their ancestors gave them a name, For you know you won't be calling them King, Or Tudor or Trent or just any old thing. I You're glad you knew Chapman and Grundy before, So you wonit call them Glascow, or Gresham, or Moore. And when you think you've learned all, and you're ready to drop Up bob Vernor, and Wageck and your mind goes ker-flop. And because they came late we must add to this jingle Three girls named Nelch, McCarthy, and Pringle. So I'm tellin, you now, course all in good jest, From this confusion of names I need a long rest. And I promise you too, cross my heart hope to die To learn all your names in vacation I'll try. I'll take the whole list, put it under my head Every night of my life when I go to bed, I'll go to sleep sayin' jest over and over Dearing, and Dodson, and Daly, and Dover. And if I walk in my sleep like Lady Macbeth I'll say Lily, and Lillard, Lipscomb, and Landreth. And when you get back you'll' find that I,m game, I'll say Happy New Year, my dear, I know you and your name Page One Hundred Twenty nzne . ' ,I E I 1 1 i 1 1. N , 1 I X . 1 x I, 1 w I F . Y I , N .
