FOOTBALL 195 3 - INDIVIDUAL GAMES CENTRAL- HELENA On September 12th, a spirited Maroon team outclassed the vaunted Helena Bengals. A hard-running quintet of Central backs, Hocking, Bolton, James, Roache and Freebourn, led the way in gaining the tie. A second Central T.D. was called back on a backfield-in-motion penalty. Hocking scored the only touchdown for Central. CENTRAL-BUTTE On September 18th before 10,000 people in Naranche Stadium, the annual Central vs. Butte game was played. It was regarded by many as a toss-up. Early in the game Central began a determined march, and on the first play of the second quarter, after Central had driven 57 yards, Freebourn plunged over from the two yard line for the first and the only touchdown of the game. Late in the last period, Butte High drove 68 yards to the Central six yard line, but they were stopped on downs and thus ended the only Purple threat of the ball game. Again it was Hocking, James, Roche, and Freebourn along with Bartsch, Shannon, and Burby who starred for Central. This was the first time that Central had beaten Butte in 28 years, and it was followed by a wild two-hour victory celebration throughout the streets of Butte. CENTRAL-DILLON Before a record crowd of fans in Dillon, Central wheeled off runs of 60, 57, 52, and 30 yards. They completely outclassed the Dillon Beavers with a score of 39-12. Scoring touchdowns for Central were Burby, Freebourn, Lester and Hocking. CENTRAL-ANACON DA HIGH In their first conference game of 1953, Central amassed a record breaking score of 60 to I3 against the Copperheads. The game was featured by long runs, and the Maroons outgained the Copperheads in rushing 375 yards to 84. Central's 60 points was the highest score that was ever attained by a Maroon squad in Mfestern Class A competition. CENTRAL-LIVINGSTON On October 9th, the Maroons traveled to Livingston where Burby, Freebourn, Hocking, and james headed a 27 to 0 victory spree and helped the Maroons gain their second conference win. CENTRAL-HAVRE At Havre the Central squad, with runs of 70, 48, and 12 yards by Freebourn and 80 yards by James, soundly defeated a much heavier but also a much slower Pony team by a score of 31 to 12. CENTRAL-KALISPELL Using numerous trick plays, Central scored a 33 to 13 victory of the Braves, and were left unbeaten before the Divisional Championship game with Bozeman. CENTRAL-BOZEMAN The Maroons won the zone title with an unexpected 25 to 6 victory over the Bozeman Hawks. Central's deception had the Bozeman team and at times even the officials foiled. The Maroons outrushed Bozeman 258 yards to 86. In capturing the zone title the Maroons be- came eligible to play Glendive for the State Class HA Championship. CENTRAL-MISSOULA Central suffered her first loss of the season at the hands of the Missoula Spartans. The State Class AA champions proved too much for Central, and although the Maroons made two major scoring threats, Jim Pickens played a stellar game, and the Spartans would not be beaten. Final Score: Missoula 13, Central 0. CENTRAL-GLENDIVE November 13th found almost 500 Butte fans boarding the Butte Central Football Spe- cial for the Championship game at Glendive. On Saturday afternoon, Glendive kicked off to Central before 2,000 fans. Early in the game, Central fumbled near their own goal, and this set up a Glendive score in the second period. In the third period Glendive scored again, and the score stood 12 to 0. Central's only touchdown came in the third quarter with a steam-roller march to the goal where Freebourn put the ball over. Central could not make another T.D. however and lost her state title to a much bigger Red Devil Team.
