O crystal ountain of faith, batheour minds with the eternal truths! O frag- rant Lily of all holiness, captivate our hearts with your heavenly perfume! O Con- queress of evil and death, inspire in us a deep horror of sin which makes the soul detestable to God and a slave of hell! U Well-beloved of God, hear the ardent cry which rises up from every heart in this year dedicated to you. Bend tenderly over our aching Wounds. Convert the wicked, dry the tears of the afflicted and oppressed, conform the poor and humble, quench hatreds, sweeten harshness, safeguard the flower of purity in youth, protect the holy Church, make all 'men feel the attraction of Christian goodness. In your naine,i resounding harmoniously in heaven, may they recognize that they are brothers, and that the nations are members of one family, upon which may there shine forth the sun of a universal and sincere peace. ' ' C' C Receive, O Most Sweet Mother, our humble supplicationsgand above all obtain for us that, one day, happy with you, we may repeat before your throne that hymn which today is sung on earth around your altars: You are all beautiful, O Mary! You are the glory, you are the joy, you are the honor of ours' people! Amen. x Jxgfx,,xJx fggfx Jxagfx Jxuigxgx 1 . .,..,.., ,,., F., .,,,. , 1.153 l 'Q 3 i Z ,M W ivy? Every student in Central has at one time or another turned to Mary for help, and always he finds that in the bosom of Our Blessed Mother we can always find sympathy, assistance, and most of all love To the High School boy and girl especially Mary is a constant link with God. It is with deep devotion then, that we dedicate this the 1954 edition of the Maroon,' to Mary in her Marian Year. But one fixture of Central is the man whose humor makes a drab, dreary day bright, and whose understanding sympathy makes a d0wncast student cheer up. To the Freshmen this man is Mr. Quinn, but to those who have known him for a while he is just Tom . '6Tom, did you find a pen? Tom, did you see an English book? For 17 years, Tom has answered these questions, as well as doing his required jobs plus much more. Tom has certainly been the finest example of a conscientious Christian worker that could be found anywhere, and may we the Class of '54 say we hope he'll continue to do these things for another 17 years or more. May we propose a toast. A toast of long life, good health, happiness, and the fullfillment of every wish, along with our heartfelt gratitude for making our stay at Central so much more pleasant. Every years also, the time seems to go faster and faster and every June, a class graduates from High School. And this year it comes time for us to leave the school which has been our home-away-from- home for four years. As Freshmen in September of 1950 some of us came to know and fear Bro. Dunphy's Doctor Brown . However we were determined to be successful, and thirty-two of us made the honor roll. Nineteen of our class were chosen to play Frosh basketball. Some entered the band, one was on the ski team and three joined the tumblers. At the end of our Freshman year, we had made a mark for ourselves at Central and could hardly wait to come back as Sophomores to further our fame. In our second year eleven again made the honor roll, and five of our players won a place on the A football team. Nine were admitted to the Monogram Club, seven to the newly formed Key Club, and three were on the Varsity Basketball Team. W'e had now gained a little more confidence in ourselves and we became more at ease. As Juniors, we were nearing the end of our High School days. Twelve of our class were on the State Class A Championship team, thirteen were on the honor roll, and ten were in the Key Club. Eight were on the speech team, seven in the Monogram Club, and seven won places on the Varsity Basketball team. None ol' us will ever forget the day when the senior class graduated, and we at last began to call ourselves seniors. As the oldest students in the school, we have enjoyed a varied year. XVe led the school in cheering and in celebrating when Central won her first city football title in twenty-eight years. Most of us were present when the 'Central Special took off for Glendive to attend the State Football Championship game. The class was also well-represented at the Northern Divisional Basketaball Tournament in Great Falls. Central has always been a school of leaders, and we, the graduates of 1954, hope to carry on in the best traditions of our Alma Mater. XVhat lies ahead of us, only time will tell. Some of us will probably go to college, some will enter the Armed Forces, and some will undoubtedly begin working immediately after graduation. But whatever we do, or wherever we are, we can never forget the wonderful influence of the Brothers. Our thanks go also to Tom Quinn and the faculty, and to the students of Girls' Central. To them and to all of our friends, we do not wish to say good-bye, but rather, A Dieu. The Class of 1954 A H 2 2? THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1954 can look with much justified pride at their last year at Cen- tral. They have a record which any graduating class would be proud to hold. Five Seniors placed on the first string of the A.P. All-State Team: jay Sullivan, Herb Shan- non, Dick Roche, Glenn james and Harry Freebourn. Ralph Hocking placed on the second string and .jim Lee received honorable mention. An amazing record of seven players out of eleven receiving this honor. -jim Lee also was chosen among the Top Ten in the Northern Division of Basketball. Football is not the only thing that excelled at Central. The leadership of the Senior Class and the spirit displayed by it equal any high school anywhere. With President, Dick Roche, Vice President, Steve Frankinog Secretary, Tom Schumacher and Treasurer, jay Sulli- van at the healm of Senior 202, and Skip Dunfee, President, -joe Nevin, Vice President, and Don Murphy, Secretary-Treasurer of Senior 102, the Class of 1954 has left some very impres- sive footprints in the sands of time. The leadership of the group was not confined merely to class, however. The various organizations of the school also bore the earmarks of the reigning seniors. Neil Bolton and Dick Roche were Co-Captains of the Football Team. Ralph Hocking, President, and Dick Roche, Vice-President, conducted the affairs of the Monogram Club. The Key Club had a most successful year under President, Steve Frankinog Secretary, Con Foley, and Treasurer, -john Sul- livan, while Bill Finlen served as Convention Chairman. The spirited Band had an extremely successful year under its officers: Con Foley, Presidentg Tom Schumacher, Vice-President, -john Sullivan, Secretary, and Ray Gilmore, Treasurer. QContinued on next pagej The Senior USXEIIHIJH can also be found in the various activities sponsored by organizations of the city and state. Gene Hogan won the American Legion contest in the District and placed second in the Zone. Con Foley took first place honors in the Key Club Oratorical Contest for the state of Montana, and Tom Schumacher took first place in the talent contest for the Montana District of Key Clubs. Steve Frankino placed first in the Elks Scholarship Contest. Con Foley also won first place in the Apologetics Contest for the Diocese of Helena. Con Foley was chosen as Editor-in-Chief ol the IQ54 Annual, with .lim McCarthy, Assistant Editorg Bill Loughrin, Business Managerg lim Driscoll, Photography Editorg John Sullivan, Liter- ary Editorg and Steve Frankino, Art Editor. Gene Hogan and Brian Tierney were Journal- ists, Skip Dunfee was typist, and Toni Schumacher did the lettering. And finally there are those boys who were always willing to help out. Those boys whose spirit, even though they are not participants, is equal to that of the participants. To these too, Central owes its greatness. Its greatness comes from spirit. The spirit of fight. The spirit oi 'Anever say diem. Yes this spirit of greatness is the spirit of Central, but more especially the spirit of the Senior Class of I954. It was through the time and efforts of these men, who sacrificed so much for youth, that Boys' Central has risen to heights in all activities that equal any high school any- where. When the Roundtable was organized in the fall of 1943, student activities at Central were at a low ebb due to lack of public support-both financially and otherwise. Under the lead- ership of Joseph L. Markham, the first Chairman, and the interested men of this city a unique organization was established. An organization which raised finances to carry on sports and other activities at Central and at the same time raised the interest of the public in the teams which they built. The greatest example of the success can be measured in the yardstick of the time it has existed. In the eight years of the young life of this organization Central's gridiron teams have won two Class A State Championships, and was runner-up, three times. Her basketball teams won the Northern Division Tournament once, and was runner-up twice, While in 1950 Central won her first Big 16 Basketball Championship. Centra1's well organized and well equipped teams, and her tremendous coaching faculties are a direct result of the untiring efforts of the men who make up our Roundtable. It is to these men that we the Class of '54 take off our hats. It is with deep affection and humble gratitude that we offer our heartfelt thanks. To the Roundtable members of the past, more especially of the present, and with a pledge to the future, we the graduating class of 1954, Salute You! In just two short seasons, Jim has made an enviable record for himself. As the first graduate of Central ever to coach Central's varsity teams, he has already proven that Central graduates are of superior stock. In his first year as mentor at Central, he coached the Maroons through an undefeated Class Championship. In his second year as coach, the past season, he did what no other coach at Central has been able to do for 28 years. This was, of course, to coach Central to a victory over Butte High for the City Championship. After this game, his fighting Central squad played an undefeated season in the Class A Western Division. Although they were defeated in the State Championship game, the Maroons displayed a fiery spirit that was induced into them by their spirited mentor. A star football player in his own high school days, Jim has shown the team the pep with which he played. He has invented various trick plays and has developed the backfield into a smooth-working, precision machine which has completely baffled their opponents. 'lim has already proven his value as a coach, and all of Central and the City of Butte know that next season, and in seasons to come, he MR HM SWEENEY will produce a brilliant record of victories and championships for Central. MR. DAN McCARTHY MR. STEVE KASUN The capability of producing outstanding teamwork as was produced this past football season by the assistant coaches, Dan McCarthy and Steve Kasun, with head Coach Jim Swee- ney, reflected brightly on the Maroon Football team of 1952. Messrs. McCarthy and Kasun did a masterful job of helping Mr. Sweeney round out a group of willing boys in the latter part of last August into a hard charging, aggressive line and backfield and a smooth work- ing outfit that was to be dreaded in September, October, and November by the opposing High School's of Montana's Big l6. May we of Central, and all her loyal followers pause a moment to salute you, Steve Kasun and Dan McCarthy for transferring your grand spirit to the 1953 football team which in our opinion is the greatest football team ever produced in the annals of Central. Fas There are men who work behind the scenes in Centralls athletic program and one of these men is Rev. Bro. E. T. Beyer, our Athletic Mod- erator. The job of athletic moderator is very tiring and requires much patience and dili- gence. Brother Beyer's genial personality and great interest in the welfare of the participants in athletics has gained him the friendship of students both in the classroom and on the ath- letic field. Brother Beyer is deserving of the highest praise and thanks for a job well done. Kc.-W BROTHER BEYER, ATHLETIC MODERATOR MR. GEORGE PERRY MR. FRANCIS DOLAN The two men seen so often with the team, but never acknowledged are Mr. George Perry and Mr. Francis Dolan. A very great debt of gratitude is owed these men who have given so freely of their time, both at practices and during the games. The credit for these two victories goes first to the two wonderful young coaches, Steve Sullivan and Jim Sweeney, and the tremendous spirit of the teams. The football season of 1953 is one that will long be remembered by all Central students and supporters. After scoring a tie in their first game with a fighting Helena squad, Central went on to perform a feat that had been long awaited by their friends and supporters- Before a crowd of over 10,000 people, Central delivered to Butte High a stunning blow, in beating them for the first time in 28 years. A most-successful Class A season followed this, and on November 13th, hundreds of local supporters boarded a special train for Glendive and the championship game. Although they were unsuccessful in retaining the state title in Glendive, the team dis- played a fighting spirit which won them the admiration of both the Central and Glendive fans. It was this spirit which highlighted a most successful gridiron season for Central. A hard-running quintet of Central backs, Hocking, Bolton, James, Roache and Freebourn, led the way in gaining the tie. A second Central T.D. was called back on a backfield-in-motion penalty. Hocking scored the only touchdown for Central. CENTRAL-BUTTE On September 18th before 10,000 people in Naranche Stadium, the annual Central vs. Butte game was played. It was regarded by many as a toss-up. Early in the game Central began a determined march, and on the first play of the second quarter, after Central had driven 57 yards, Freebourn plunged over from the two yard line for the first and the only touchdown of the game. Late in the last period, Butte High drove 68 yards to the Central six yard line, but they were stopped on downs and thus ended the only Purple threat of the ball game. Again it was Hocking, James, Roche, and Freebourn along with Bartsch, Shannon, and Burby who starred for Central. This was the first time that Central had beaten Butte in 28 years, and it was followed by a wild two-hour victory celebration throughout the streets of Butte. CENTRAL-DILLON Before a record crowd of fans in Dillon, Central wheeled off runs of 60, 57, 52, and 30 yards. They completely outclassed the Dillon Beavers with a score of 39-12. Scoring touchdowns for Central were Burby, Freebourn, Lester and Hocking. CENTRAL-ANACON DA HIGH In their first conference game of 1953, Central amassed a record breaking score of 60 to I3 against the Copperheads. The game was featured by long runs, and the Maroons outgained the Copperheads in rushing 375 yards to 84. Central's 60 points was the highest score that was ever attained by a Maroon squad in Mfestern Class A competition. CENTRAL-LIVINGSTON On October 9th, the Maroons traveled to Livingston where Burby, Freebourn, Hocking, and james headed a 27 to 0 victory spree and helped the Maroons gain their second conference win. CENTRAL-HAVRE At Havre the Central squad, with runs of 70, 48, and 12 yards by Freebourn and 80 yards by James, soundly defeated a much heavier but also a much slower Pony team by a score of 31 to 12. CENTRAL-KALISPELL Using numerous trick plays, Central scored a 33 to 13 victory of the Braves, and were left unbeaten before the Divisional Championship game with Bozeman. CENTRAL-BOZEMAN The Maroons won the zone title with an unexpected 25 to 6 victory over the Bozeman Hawks. Central's deception had the Bozeman team and at times even the officials foiled. The Maroons outrushed Bozeman 258 yards to 86. In capturing the zone title the Maroons be- came eligible to play Glendive for the State Class HA Championship. CENTRAL-MISSOULA Central suffered her first loss of the season at the hands of the Missoula Spartans. The State Class AA champions proved too much for Central, and although the Maroons made two major scoring threats, Jim Pickens played a stellar game, and the Spartans would not be beaten. Final Score: Missoula 13, Central 0. CENTRAL-GLENDIVE November 13th found almost 500 Butte fans boarding the Butte Central Football Spe- cial for the Championship game at Glendive. On Saturday afternoon, Glendive kicked off to Central before 2,000 fans. Early in the game, Central fumbled near their own goal, and this set up a Glendive score in the second period. In the third period Glendive scored again, and the score stood 12 to 0. Central's only touchdown came in the third quarter with a steam-roller march to the goal where Freebourn put the ball over. Central could not make another T.D. however and lost her state title to a much bigger Red Devil Team. B AND FRESHMAN FGOTBALL Left to Right: 'lst Row: E. Burby, T. Konen, j. Bugni, D. Bolton, A. B TEAM AND 'FROSH FOOTBALL Xflfhile the Varsity practiced at the Emmett Street Field this year, those who watched hardly ever cast a glance at a group of timid Freshmen and Sophomores who were gathered in one corner of the field. These boys wearing an assortment of various colored jerseys, were recruits for the Frosh and B teams. It did not take long for the coaches Jack Coyne and Spike Pelletier to show the sophs and freshies who were fresh from the laurels of grade school victories-that here was where the men were separated from the boys. At these young years the will-to-win and the spirit of Central is instilled in the boys of Central's gridiron-A spirit that overrules even the bruises and cuts that might be suffered in play. It is in this corner of the field that future championship teams are formed. At the seasons end, it was a tough bunch of aggressive, seasoned, hardboiled, players who hung up their uniforms until next year. Central can well be proud of the fine job that both ,lack and Spike have done for the Frosh and HB teams. In future years the fruits of the labors of these unselfish men will show themselves plainly, and victories of future teams will be traced back to the dedication of these men to their tasks. XVith such men as these, Central builds not only football teams but also men, who upon graduation will be ready to take their places in the world. COACH SWEENEY Coach Sweeney in his second year of coaching Basketball at Central, produced a much improved and more co-ordinated team than that of last year. Jim is popular with coaches, players and students from all over the state, and is noted for his mild manner and true sportsmanship. He has improved Centrals' Basketball fortunesg and will, no doubt, in the near future place Central on the road to great teams and many champion- ships. Renourd, VARSITY BASKETBALL 1953-195 4 A rnuch improved Central squad started off the season by winning nine of their first twelve games. Their peak was reached at the end of january, however, and their fortunes began to decline. Out of their next ten games, they managed to emerge victorious in only two. At the Northern Divisional Tournament in Great Falls, Central won one out of the three games they played and so wound up the season with a record of twelve wins and thir- teen losses. Although they did not qualify for play in the State Tournament, they had one consolation in regaining the City Basketball Championship from Butte High, and thus held city championships in both football and basketball. Credit is due, of course, to Coach Jim Sweeney for turning the Maroons into one of the finest ball handling clubs in the State, and also to the members of the squad, especially the Seniors, who always extended themselves in the best traditions of Central. Beyer, won all of its games against other Freshman Teams throughout the state, and even beat a Senior Intramural Team. This speaks well of Brother Beyer's Coaching because this undefeated season gives him 26 straight Wins in the past two years as Freshman Coach. lt is from this team, that next year will be drawn the members of the B Team, and perhaps some members of the Varsity , therefore the fine record and high spirit of this team speak favorably for future teams at Central. CROSS COUNTRY STARTERS . xu 1 .. Tw . MR. MARTIN CESARE The Band owes a very deep debt of grati- tude to its moderators Brothers O'Donnell and Regan. Brother O'Donnell had charge of the band until the end of the football season, when his many duties as Vice-Principal of the school forced him to resign. It was through his effort and untiring work that the Band was able to put on many of the fine performances during the year. Brother O'Donnell also arranged for the Band to make the trip to Livingston and he was the driving force behind the Campaign to send the Band to Glendive. He certainly de- serves a great deal of credit for his fine work. Brother Regan found things a little quieter when he took over, because the mad rush of the football season had let up. Nevertheless, Brother stepped in and continued to help Mr. Cesare make the Band one of the best. To him also goes much credit for a job well done. As always, Mr. Cesare has produced a fine repertoire of both classical and popular music. During football season he directed the combined Boys' and Girls' Bands in performances out- standing both in music and showmanship. Dur- ing the basketball season he and the Band de- lighted the crowds with the many unusual ar- rangements of the current popular tunes. With his fine musical background he has been able to arrange many unusual concerts which have been presented in performances throughout Butte. In these concerts he has combined the very best classical, semiclassical, modern and popular compositions, and arranged them for a smaller band. Central can indeed be proud and happy to have such a master of music at the head of the Music Department. REV. BRO. C. Theme , The Four Seasons , Early American Thanksgiving , and A Travelogue . Through the generosity of the Butte people, the Band and Twirlers were able to make the cross-state trip to Glendive where the Four Sea- sons theme thrilled the audience once more. IT VVAS SAID by many last year when Central tied for the Carroll College Catholic Speech- meet Sweepstakes, that they would have a strong Speech Team at Central in 1954. So far this prophecy has come true. This 1954 season of speech has been perfect in every sense. Central broke all of her previous records by doing what no other school has been able to do. That is: bring home three Sweepstakes trophies. At the beginning of the season Central amassed twice as many points as the second place team, to win the Meet for all Catholic schools in the State. It was the second time in a row that Central took this meet, held annually at Carroll College. Next, and also for the second time in a row, Central won the coveted Sweepstakes trophy at the Meet for all schools, public and Catholic in the southwestern part of Montana. Finally, to round out a perfect score, Central received the greatest honor of all, the first place, or Sweep- stakes at the M.S.U. Interscholastic Meet, held in Missoula for all public, Catholic, and pri- vate schools in the State of Montana. The Speech Team owes a special debt of gratitude to Rev. Bro. II. C. Fellows for his splen- did leadership. Without Brother Fellow's help, these things would have been neither pos- sible nor probable. All boys at Central can well be proud that a man like Brother Fellows is at the head of the Speech Team. 27:3 43 Rev. ako. 1. c. Fettows DRAMA At the Bow Theatre, on Wednesday night, February 3, 1954, at 8:15, the Boys' Central Dra- matic Club presented its annual play - - THE ARRIVAL OF KITTY Behind the scenes at the Bow there was tense excitement, and much nervousness, while the cast awaited the curtain before the in front of the scenes farce. Much relief was felt by all when the play was well received, and the comment, - best play Central has ever produced, was heard from many members of the audience. The cast included some of the Boys' Central leading ladieswz Miss Jim Sheire, Miss Tom Tipple, Miss Terry Irving and Miss George Met- calf. The leading men were Messrs. Gene Hogan, John Cashell, john Drynan and Jim Dris- coll, also Mr. GQ ehh - - Miss QPQ Brian Tierney. Nobody Qexcept Tierneyj was quite sure just what he was. Nevertheless it was all in fun and a good time was had by all. By all that is except the production staff, without which there would have been no play at all. A vote of thanks is due Mrs. Dorothy Lombardi for helping with the make-up, and to Mr. Tom Quinn for his splendid stage settings. VVith regard to the stage managers, we vote Joe Kosmak and Joe Finnegan as the best in the West, and Peter Irving as the best prompter ever. We're running Rev. Bro. L. C. Uicker for publicity president and his assistants, Joe Kosmak, Jerry Sullivan and Jim Driscoll on the very best Thanks Platform. And last but not least, the cast would like to extend to its Director - Rev. Bro. J. C. Fellows, its most humble, grateful and sincere thanks. The sacrifice of the cast could come nowhere near matching that of Brother Fellows. The benefits which the cast received from his guidance cannot be measured in feet or inches, but only in the yardstick of time. Cfaad .kedfory A YVHITE-HAIRED, energetic old lady steps briskly on the modern collapsi- ble platform, quiets the gathering with a flick of the electronically controlled gavel, and the 50th class reunion of the Girls' Central '54 alumnae is under way. There are only 35 members remaining, and all are present. Thoughts wander back to the middle of the 20th century, when . . . Approximatly 97 freshmen stormed into the old house on the hill .' They had a firm belief that they could do ANYTHING, Qlegal of courselj and under the inexperienced direction of their officers they topped all other classes in the two school drives of the year. In September after they were settled in their new school their officers were elected and inherited the traditional job of checking sophomore lists at basketball and football games. Entering into the sphere known as the Upper Class, the same fine spirit that they had shown previously was increased. The highlight of the Junior year was the spring prom, Stairway to the Stars . After waiting four years for the longed-for title Senior , they at last were allowed to sport maroon and white beanies and gold class rings. The major activity of the Senior year was the annual Pal Dance, their theme being 'AW'inter Magic . The iournalism staff regained the coveted A11-American rating for the Cen- tralite. ln this, the super-atomic age, they reminisced about the good old days. They remembered above all the gratitude they felt but were unable to express to their parents to the Sisters, Priests, and lay faculty, to Willie and Mrs. Harrington, and to all who made their high-school days a never-to-be-forgotten memory. ORIGIN OF SOME MONTANA NAMES Helena - According to the Helena Historical directory of 1879 the city of Helena was named by John Somerville for his former home of St. Helena, Minn. It was Voted by the early citizens to drop the pre- fix, Saint. Wibaux - The town was named for Pierre Wibaux, son of a wealthy Parisian silk manufacturer who settled in this area in the 80's. In his heyday, Pierre was the largest cattle operator in the world, own- ing as many as 65,000 head. Bannack - This pioneer community was named after the Ban- nock Ccorrectl Indian tribe and became Montana's first city, a boom camp roaring with a population of thousands. Missoula -- The Garden City was named for the broad river that flows through the center of town. The river was named by the In- dians, Miswoula meaning sparkling water. Three Forks - This town, steeped in historic lore and legend, gets its name from the convergence of the three forks, the Gallatin, Madi- son and Jefferson Rivers. ,, .i Wolf Point - How it was named - Great numbers of wolf pelts were stacked along the Missouri banks awaiting shipment on early day steamboats to the St. Louis market. Fort Benton - The name honors an early day champion of fur interests, Senator Thomas Benton of Missouri, and was named in 1846 by the American Fur Company. ANACONDA COPPER MINING CO. Why, partner, I never could see it. And I've lived here many a year. 'I'here's nothing pretty about her, But somehow she's strong and free. And big and rugged and well, comrade She looks pretty good to me. She's beautiful too, in her fashion In her wonderful, strange old wayg W'ith her chimneys and throbbing engines, Her hillsides marred and gray. Shels the goddess of wealth and power It's a thing my words won't reach, lt takes a man to express it . l'Vho's born with a gift of speech. But some clear autumn morning YVhen the air is like a sip From a spring of sparkling water That touches the pilgrim's lip Go out and look around you At the mountains against the skyg Those quiet immutable mountains - That carry their heads so high. And then as the day grows brighter, And the sky is limpid blue, They come in their grandeur closer And sort of reach down to you. And you feel, with a thrill of wonder That has no strain of pride, That you are one of the mountains That heart of the great divide. Then at sunset how they fill you X'Vith a sense of perfect. awe, As the colors bathe and light them N' ln faith with God's good lawg Purple and gold and crimson Painted by nature's hand, l can't begin to express it, But I think I can understand. And the city itself at night time lVhen seen from a distant place. XVith its many lights a-glistening Like flames on a snowtbank's face, They sweep in a grand crescendo, In glittering rows and lines, Till they flicker into the starlight That shimmers above the mines. Ugly and bleak? YVe11, maybe, But my eyes have learned to find The beauty of truth, not substance, The beauty that lies behind. Her faults and her sins are many, To injure her fair repute, But her heart and her soul are cleanly And shefs beautiful dear old Butte. -by Berton Braley I .
