For some of the students, this will be a new experience. They will meet new teachers, new subjects, and new iriends. They will begin to grow as Christians and individuals. For other students, this will be a :ontinuation ofthe education previously started. They will try to accomplish the goals they set for themselves and new goals for the future. Many students have come and gone through these ouildings over the past years, and many more will come in the future. They too will find something different at C.B.H.S.: a spirit of brotherhood. They will find meaning in their ac- zomplishments, and learn from their mistakes. Through the years, C.B.H.S. will continue to irovide a sense of value to the students, thus keeping its tradition alive and active. School life is made up of many things. Throughout the schoo day, the student encounters z variety of academic subjects, but there is more to it than that. Durr ing the day, the student is in troduced to new ideas, nevi responsibilities, and new friends He learns to meet the challenges that face him with a positive at titude. He learns to become a parl of the school community and tc take an active interest in its processes. He builds a set ot values which will influence the rest of his life. Through these things, he carries on the traditior of Christian Brothers High Schoo and takes pride in his ac- complishments. v s c H o 0 L After i Although the end of another school day has arrived, life at C.B.H.S. continues to go on. Man activities are available to the student, such as student government, journalism, community a' fairs, science, language, drama, and school spirit. The C.B.H.S. Band, one of the oldef organizations in the school, plays an important role in many aspects of school life. Both ir terscholastic and intramural sports are open to the student. All of these are some of the activities offered at C.B.H.S. These organizations provide a balance with the academic partl school, and give the student experiences and knowledge which he cannot find in the ' , l 'l School The Brothers had a great team this year because they had a lot of good, tough prac- ticing. After a long week of practice, the team traveled to the game by bus with a positive attitude. Once at the stadium the team went through their pre-game drills, as the band and the cheerleaders started the spirit flowing through the many fans. After the many victories, it was evident that the Brothers had their best team in a few years. After the games came the Victory Dances which are attended by the student body and their dates. As the students left the dance, they went home as a proud, unified, and vic- torious school. FOOTBALL 1977 :Bak i i 4 'N H 0 M E c 0 M I N G 7 7 ln the tradition of the football season, comes the Homecoming game. At the pep rally, the outcome of the decorations contest is announced with the Class of 1978 winning for the third time in four years. During half time of the game, the court walks on the field surrounded by a banner of the C.B.H.S. fight song. The game is a success as the Brothers come out victorious against Over- ton. After the game there is more excitement as the students prepare for the big dance. During the dance, the Queen and her court are announced. Tina Donati of SAA takes Se- cond alternate, while First alternate goes to Pam Hyde of St. lVlary's. The Homecoming Queen for 1977 is lo Ann Harmeier of SAA. www: Enirinfaff 5 Q 'x 3 S S S K, fi U S S553 YW KKK! P X W KKK Y Y W H X Y X EERE X MXH! YYY Y E Y 1 Y WHY W EEE Y Y X X Y W H h YW XXX! The key play of the game turned out to be a defen- sive stand on a Grenada 2-point conversion attempt. This year's victory avenged last year's loss. The Brothers then travelled to Melrose and defeated them easily on their home field. The following three games demonstrated the Brothers' football prowess as the rolled over Kingsbury, Central, and Overton. The Purple Wave, now boasting a 5-O record, began to prepare for the meat of their schedule: Raleigh Egypt, Hamilton, and Woodale. These three games would deter- mine the league's representative to the state playoffs. In a game that was built-up to be a close contest, the Bro slaughtered Raleigh Egypt 28-0. The next encounter matched the 5th ranked Brothers against the 4th ranked Hamilton Wildcats. The game was so widely publicized, that it was decided that the site for the contest would be Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. ln the game, the Brothers dominated the first half and led by the score of 12-0 when the horn sounded. The second half was a different story though, as the Wildcats turned our mental errors and turnovers into 13 points, which led to a heartbreaking 13-12 defeat. The Brothers had lost a game in which they had clearly outplayed the opponent. With Hamilton on probation, the spot in the playoffs boiled down to CBHS vs. Woodale. The Brothers won a thriller with Wigley redeeming himself, by booting a tough field goal with only seconds to play. The margin ot victory was only one point, 22-21, Brothers. The game after Woodale was anti- climactic, as the Brothers thrashed hapless Craigmont. The Purple Wave finished the regular season with an 8-1 mark, and they had obtained the experience necessary to be STATE CHAMPIONS. T05 THE STATE With the opening of school, long-time observers of Purple Wave football expected good things and hoped for great things. Built around a nucleus of seniors who gave us a perfect record as freshmen and who had contributed greatly to teams as sophomores and juniors, the team had a firm foundation of gutty young men who wanted to win. They wanted to notch Coach Nix's two-hundredth victory during this season and bring home a state championship to a school already neck-deep in football tradition. lt proved to be a team somewhat different from other legendary teams at C.B.H.S. Talented, but lacking the super-gifted in- dividuals that gave the Brothers so much success during the sixtiesg they knew that their ability to win would have to depend on a total school and team effort. The four playoff games exemplified the total effort completely. The first two 6-0 wins over Southside and Brownsville gave the defensive unit the chance to make its contribution. The semi-final game against Father Ryan saw the defense shutting down the most potent passing attack in the state and the offense giving the Fighting lrish a lesson in how the game is played. The Dec. 2. contest against Chattanooga Baylor can only be described as a classic. For those who were in attendance, little has to be recorded in this Chronicle-for decades, the game will remain in their memory as though played yesterday. For the record, the Purple Wave relied on its most successful pass receiver, as quarterback Ronnie Skinner gathered in a Mike Pruett pass in the end zone for his first and last reception with 23 seconds left. The play gave C.B.H.S. a 22-19 victory and the State Championship. All photographs on this page courtesy of the Memphis Press-Scimitar and Commercial Appeal. Balton, Brother Joseph. Under the excellent guidance of Coach Frank Horton, the 1977 Cross Country Team proved to be one of the most Jowerful squads the school has ever seen. Team depth proved to be the deciding factor in most of the Brothers' meets. Uaced by juniors Chris Ozanne and Tim Soro and sophomore Lawson Horton, the winged runners bolted through the 'egular season with a five and one record, including an M.I.A.A. American Conference Championship-the tirst in the :chool's history. Also, the team fared well in several prestigious invitatlonals held throughout Memphis and West Tennessee. With all lettermen returning, next year's 1978 team should go a long way. The team was able to reach the regionals, and they came away with fifth place. We also sent six wrestlers to the state, among these were: Bob Wilson, Paul Averwater, Carl Pfeiffer, Walt Walton, John Gross, and Brian 0'Donnell. A record was set this year also, as Paul Averwater wrestled in more state matches than any previous Purple Wave body-slammer. The team performed up to its potential all year long, to make CBHS a top-notch wrestling contender. From left to right: lst Row-P. Averwater, B. Bernard, M. Powers, l. Fisher, J. May, J.
