The 1969 Chronicle has found for its dedication a man who shines forth brilliantly in the field of education. His classroom manner and mode of teaching have endeared him to all those fortunate enough to take Problems of Democracy. And out of the classroom his superior foresight and cunning have made him one of the finest football coaches in the city of Memphis. It is for the above qualities and contributions that we, the editors of the 1969 Chronicle, dedicate our effort to Mr. Nafe David. , ,A--K .. . THE C B H S TRADITION The first era of the new Christian Brothers High School has passed and now, after four years, we can look back on a memorable period in our lives. Although ten miles from the old school, we have strongly upheld the tra- ditions of Christian Brothers High School in the true spir- it ofthe Brothers' Boysf v -' va, 4 ,W , N, 9 1 , Ut H, ff Y its ,mf W ' .M 8' V , if ' g flu 1? f 77 Riff WL M 4 1:1 Maw 1 M M 1 .rr MN. 4,lV,,y xqvihfy, ,I v,,,, ,H fy, , v, 7, ., I ,,, ,V ww W, My QM f F ,L lj' ,mai V4 Mmfx, V A, , ,Y , XM, M ff, 4, 'jrf 3 f ' Z ,, ,, ' ff , ' jffwzz-A ,A '-Q , ' ' ,,p,f WM , I A ,,, , Aw I qwiffyq . if , ,ww ,M ,M . w,,rV,4r, nf.4,aW W It A, , , ,W W W ' JM , 4, wfvg,43m,i,fZ ' A-f fic , v .Q 'xr x Z' 4 A 4 Y ,, 241 1, ., ,V 'A , M gum 2 V, 3 .l.L..u..A..t .LH mZzz,,,..,..4 413 QQ Q' I Activities Athletics Acad CITIICS .Q 4 i 5 fi-'I-NK? ff--4 .-f ,.., .4- vi ,.- --fi The Administration BROTHER H. Championship Game After three quarters of struggling, arch-rivals Melrose and C.B.H.S. re- mained locked in a 0-0 tie. The Purple Wave had had a frustrating night. In the first quarter, fullback Duane Don- ahoo raced 39 yards for an apparent touchdown-the mn being nullified by a clipping penalty. With 70 seconds left in the game the Brothers, under the leadership of sub- stitute quarterback Tom Schaffler, had driven to the Wildcat 22. Unable to budge another inch with a fourth and six situation, Coach Nix sent instruc- tions for John Fox to attempt a field goal. Every Brother supporter present took to the air as the ball sailed 39 yards, easily splitting the uprights. For the second straight year the MIAA throne was ours. T. Largely due to the lack of a big manj' the Brothers turned to control basketball and a tenacious man-to-man de- fense to equalize the height advantage that other teams almost always possessed. An especially tough schedule gave an extra challenge to Coach Reid's charges and victories over South Side and White Station highlighted play. The one thing that seemed to hold back this year's team was a 2-minute jinx. Nu- merous times the Brothers were tied or ahead only to see the victory fade away in the last 120 seconds. Whether his im- mediate role may consist of academic advancement, military service or business, every 1969 'CBHS graduate not only looks backward gratefully to his parents, teach- ers, coaches and fellow students who have contributed to his emotional, intellectual and physical maturity, but he also looks forward, anticipatingly, to his capability and responsibility in assuming a positive and forceful role in the ranks of humanity, not to drastically change the world but to make it a little bit better for his having lived in it. Because every man is his brother's keeper, it is the wish of the Chronicle Staff that each man in the Class of 1969 motivate himself throughout his life accord- ing to the principle of what he can do for others as well as for himself. Since the future of the world belongs to the young, it is the responsibility of the young to make the community, the nation and the world a more habitable place for all people. Graduation, then, celebrates an accomplishment of academic success, anticipates the acquisition of a cer- tain degree of independence and demands a pledge of responsibility to oneself as well as to humanity. Every 1969 CBHS graduate would do well to take for his personal motto the challenging message of Robert Browning in his poem Prospice',: No! let me taste the whole of it, fare like my peers The heroes of old, Bear the brunt, in a minute pay glad lifels arrears Of pain, darkness and cold. 2 vf X 1 !
