At the same time, he has been a real brother to Christian Brothers High School. These tasks have required vision. Brother Lawrence Justin, F.S.C., possesses such vision. The i966 Chronicle is dedicat- ed to Brother Lawrence Justin, F.S.C., in appreciation for continuing the tradition of excellence at Christian Brothers High School. Whether it be teaching, laughing, or fishing, the action makes no difference. The difference in Christian Broth- ers High School: the Brother and his boys. Wherever they meet or whatever they do, the spirit of Christian Brothers prevails. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL 5900 WALNUT GROVE ROAD MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE 38117 MEMBERS OF THE GRADUATING CLASS: Every member of our faculty extends to each of you congratulations on having reached this most important milestone in your young lives. With pleasure, we receive you into the most devoted alumni association in the world. Wherever you go you shall be wel- comed into the society of which you are now a part. You carry an honored name, a great heritage, an impressive responsibility to be true to those who like you are grad- uates of a Christian Brothers school. Your faithfulness, personal integrity, loyalty, and dignity must always make you a worthy possessor of the title, A Christian Brothers Boy. Three things are necessary for the salvation of man, St. Thomas Aquinas wrote: To know what you ought to believe, to know what you ought to desire, and to know what you ought to do. Your education at Christian Brothers High School has, I am sure, provided you with these essentials. It has also furnished you with the knowledge and skills to do what you ought to do. Now, it is up to you to do it and I trust that you will not be unmindful of how effectively your talents and knowledge can benefit both you and your fellow man. May you live a long life, long enough to do much good. The decisions of the next few months and years are your own. We will watch, we will pray, we will be concerned, we will listen, we will help to whatever extent we can. lf you choose to let opportuni- ties pass you by, there is nothing much we can do to stop you. If on the other hand, you choose for life, for God, for your own better self, then graduates, there are many consoling, satisfying and happy days ahead. Sincerely, Brother J. Stephen, F.S.C. Fx, Students displayed real school spirit by sacrificing their Saturdays landscaping the campus. I8 SCHOOL LIFE if Q, An eagerness for learning and discovery is satisfied through the modern facilities of three new laboratories. 9:00 a.m.: A new day begins at a new Christian Brothers High School. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors crowd Through the noisy halls, tirst to their lockers and then To their homerooms. From 9:00 until 2:30 stu- dents learn. School life means school work. After 2:30 a boy's life becomes his own again: he can report to the locker rooms for athletic practice, at- tend a club meeting, or head for home. Good students are usually good workers, and through their la- bor, under the guidance of the Chris- tian Brothers, they vitalize 5900 Wal- nut Grove Road. School lite is people-students and faculty-working together to make C.B.H.S. the great institution that it it. It is a physics experiment, a rowdy but discriminating crowd, a chapel visit, or a Saturday landscaping. School life is intangible, it cannot be defined-only described. The 7966 Chronicle has attempted, neverthe- less, to capture the spirit of Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, Ten- nessee. Raising the flag at C.B.H.S. characterizes the beginning school day. of each We are the Brothers, couldn't be prouder! SENIORS Paul Hallock Editor 'ISIN FHM! 3 THE CLASS OF 766 Y I U1 . I I I I . Frequently students excel in one or two of these at- tributes, but a small minority possesses all four. C.B.H.S. recog- nizes, therefore, only its outstand- ing seniors and a few iuniors. THE LOG The school year of T965-T966 marked the beginning of the fourth year of The Log. lts first issue came out before Christmas and was greeted by sales higher than any previous edi- tion. As in prior years, The Log provided an out- let for the literary talents of the students. The poems, articles, and es- says that were written by the students and asso- ciates of Christian Broth- ers High School gave The Log its literary magazine standard. -vm at sr... ft -,ttt,,,s - r Us 'V iff I St E li Brooks Memorial Art Gallery FRONT ROW: M. The new moderator, Brother Anselme, to- gether with co-editors Bill An- dereck and Tom Pratt, brought to the paper a sense of pride that raised it to the rightful place of a school publication. The Maure- lian staff offered a complete- and often critical-account of stu- dent behavior and school events. ln addition, the future appears optimistic for The Maurelian, as a staff composed mainly of under- classmen has acquired experience for coming years. This phrase seems to aptly capture the spirit of C.B.H.S.'s 1965-66 varsity cagers. Victorious in four out of their first six starts, the Brothers ran into a late December losing streak, from which they never fully recov- ered. However, twice the young ball club took powerful Overton down to the wire only to lose in the closing seconds. CROSS- CGUNTRY It takes stamina, courage and rugged conditioning to run cross- country. An individual must be able to run at least one mile in good time to even consider qual- ifying for a cross-country team. Christian Brothers High School has five men who fulfill these requirements. They. are Paul Walsh, Jon Brownstein, Terry Ryan, Jim McGhee, and Jim Svvearingen. Following a Legion team that captured third place in the American Legion World Series in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the tu- ture appears optimistic for the varsity squad which retains many of last year's lettermen. Depth, usually a serious prob- lem to a baseball team, will be the Broth- ers' outstanding asset. A substantial num- ber ot talented senior players will be backed by hustling iuniors and hopeful sophomores. The Freshman football team of Christian Brothers, under the expert direction of Coaches Moran and Crone, fought to a three way tie for their division championship. The team opened the season with a 33-0 win over Fairview and, after victories over Sher- wood, Colonial, and Frayser, ended the season with a decisive 20-6 victory over Kingsbury. The freshman team suffered its only defeat in a hard fought 7-6 battle with Catholic Junior High. The frosh players gained much confidence and experience during their six game schedule.
