A NT LOUIS S I MISSOURI 631 17 VOLUME 39 1965 GUIDON CHRISTIAN BROTHERS COLLEGE MILITARY HIGH SCHOOL The Place Take away the life from a living body and what happens? Silence falls, activity ceases, and Olde Man Tymev places his rustic arm upon the object which remains. The Students of C.B.C. are the very life of the school. Their activity and participation enliven the school with a spirit which is the key for its success. This personification of Christian Brothers College gives every student something to respect and a tradi- tion to uphold. In turn, without the students, the school would deteriorate and eventually collapse. It is up to the Cadets to combat the diseases of Mediocrity and Senioritis and thus prolong the life span of the School. Take a look. Watch a school come to life! Dedication Faculty . . . S- ,ff C.B.C, has been blessed throughout the years in winning State Championships, Military Ratings, and Scholastic Honors. An- other blessing was bestowed upon the school when Mr. Robert Christian entered the halls of Christian Brothers College. He has instilled upon almost every Cadet a desire to uphold a great school tradition. In his own quiet manner he has bolstered school spirit and led many C.B. teams to victory. In the class- room he has Won the respect of the student while contributing to the Social Studies Department. We, the Class of 1965, dedicate this yearbook to a truly great teacher, coach, and most of all, generous individual. We soon were inducted into Cocky and ready to take on .digits J accept a new title, Sophomore. : lg The football team took up v??77T-i .,,.5,:, where they left off last year Senior Class in Retrospect gan. We entered lH'1kI10Wing , IM 1 tl another year, we were readyto .. .f , L the life and spirit of the school. The football season began, a season that was to be without defeat or a tie. During the season we developed a school spirit characteristic of C.B.C. Our introduction into the rigors of high school was softened by nearly two months of half-days due to the fact that the new addition and cafe- teria were under cdnstruction. Weekly parades were marked with freshmen ignorance as we tried to learn our right foot from our left. Within the first five months of school, most careless freshmen discovered the hardship which the demerit system can inflict. Most of us were walking on thin ice, uncertain of our next steps at C.B.C. Semester exams proved to be a new experience for most of us however, the thought that we had finished half of our first high school year was an incentive to finish the year in great style. With the year drawing to a close most of us began to feel, by our numerous experiences, that we had found a place to respectg C.B.C. By the time we reached our Junior year, such things as the Mass of the Holy Spirit, weekly parades, Auxiliary Drives, and six week report cards, became a natural part of our school lives. The foot- ball team trounced all of its opponents and finished with a three year record of 27 wins and 0 losses. This great team was ranked 8th in the na- tion. Bro. Baldwin accepted the role as principal of the school and with his discipline, kept us in line at all times. A very quiet fellow, Mr. Robert C. Horgan, led his soccer squad to the district championship. For the second year in a row we distributed W.F.C. around the St. Louis area. One of the greatest status symbols which all seniors hold dear to them is their senior rings. We received them in the last week in March and the pride which we had for them could not be measured. The apex of the Junior social life was the La Promenade Militaire. This affair, held at the Sheraton-Jefferson Hotel, will always be remembered for its splendor. Junior year came quickly to a close and the climax to a high school education was drawing nearer. . and marched on to another un- defeated season. A great thrill was beating the Jr. Bill two years in a row. Sophomore year was made even more en- joyable with the coming of' Bro. James Daniel to take over the job of Director. We began to enjoy some of the privileges which were denied us in our freshman year. Dances and mixers lwith girlsl became more and more a part of our life. However, with these privileges came responsibility. The first pro- motion list was a reward for those Sophs who had shown by their grades, uniform, and example, that they deserved the responsibility of rank. A new P.M.S. Captain William J. Forrell, was introduced to C.B.C. and worked hard to improve the military aspect of our school. One of the most spectacular events of 1963 was the State Basketball Tour- nament in Kansas City. The Cinderella team, C.B.C., ad- vanced all the way to the finals by knocking off some of the best teams in Missouri. The papers on March 10, 1963, read: C.B.C. NEW STATE CHAMPS! It was a great year, our Sophomore, and all of us left on June 5th, happy that we had finished another year. With nine months of school to go, the Class of '65 was grow- ing in age, wisdom, and under- i l-'.l.,.'i'f5 ' standing. With the loss of Mr. '41 g '5Ci ' ... Kersting as head coach of the ,,w..,L, 'gf-3 t Q 'J'i'51' football team, Mr. Gerdemann took over and led the team to a good season. The team's win- ning streak ended at 29 straight games. The Fall Review marked the time for officer commissions. Cadets dreams were made reality as they led their respective Companies and Battalions. Every school affair which we attended at C.B. would be our last. Mr. Horgan led his kickers to an- other District Title. Mr. Wilcutt and the B-Ball team de- feated Maplewood in a big game fremember the game against the Leafs two years previous?J. For some reason the Girl Representatives seemed to be more beautiful than ever before at the Officers Luncheon. The Prom symbol- ized an anti-climax to a great play. In all its austere beauty, school life at good ole C.B. was coming to an end. The last command at the Spring Review brought back memories of our Freshman year in 1961-62. May 28, that was it! The great curtain was coming to a close and all our memories would be filed away forever. Senior Poll MOST TYPICAL SENIOR . . RICH MIER BEST STUDENT . . TOM DORAN BEST LOOKING . . Its purpose is fully explained in the title. It is a religious vocation club to help seniors find their state of life. Although it furthers religious vocations for seniors, it also helps each enrolled student to find his vocation, whether religious or secular. While keeping this goal in mind, this year's club was composed of two groups. The first were those who wished to be active, made up mostly of Seniors and Juniors. The other group were those who wished to attend the meetings and say the required prayersg they were mostly sophomores and were known as associate members. It is this type of improvement which helps to make the Benildus Club a valuable asset to C.B.C. F11-St Row left to right Cradock, Ryan, Breheny, Costello, Maloney, Brock, Riozanski.. Weeks of practice preceding this an- nual event made it one of the most im- pressive in years. After marching onto the parade field, the Corps looked on as awards and decorations for the 1963-1964 school year were pre- sented to over ninety deserving cadets. It was at this time that Major General Robert H. Adams, Commanding General, XI U.S. Army Corps, presented the ROTC Honor School Streamer to Captain William J. Forrell, P.M.S. This marked a milestone in CBC history as this was the thirtieth time CBC has been the recipient of the award. Next on the agenda was the announcement of officers commissions for the 1964-1965 school year. The Review was climaxed by the appointment of Thomas J. Casey as Cadet Brigade Commander and Richard J. Mier as Brigade Executive Officer. The ceremonies concluded as the entire Cadet Corps paraded before the reviewing stand. , A if Til. f?' Q- 5.1.4 , .1 Egg' :Ii K , . f'1 s.Xi 1 L . During the football season, the band performed before the home games. The band provided march- ing music for the brigade at all parades during the school year, and at the Spring and Fall Reviews and the annual Federal Inspection. Besides this, the band also gave a performance at each of these military functions. These contributions played an integral part in the success of the military program at C.B.C. this year. Although the band's main function is to provide music for the various school activities each year, it was again much in demand for other public performances this year. The most notable of these were the Veiled Prophet parade and the premier of the movie My Fair Lady. The band's efforts were greatly appreciated by those in charge of these events and by those who attended them. This year the Student Council continued in its efforts to coordinate the ideas of the students with the ideas of the faculty. With more spirit than in recent years, the assembly has reached into new fields, untouched by previous Student Councils. In the category of dances, our endeavors were un- matched by any other school. The date dances sponsored by the S.C. were the Roaring Twenties Dance and the Bob Kuban Christmas Dance. Highly successful mixers were held in September, November, and May. These achievements, how- ever, are not extraordinary. The new element in the Student Council this year was the service it H2 performed for the community. An all out effort was given to the Christmas Basket project, in which all students participated. Also, on Palm Sunday Weekend, many C.B.C. boys collected money for the Crippled Children of St. Louis. Two scholarships were given to needy incoming fresh- men. What was the reason for the Student Coun- ci1's outstanding accomplishments? First of all, the industrious and ingenious moderator, Brother William, whose efforts were greatly appreciated, Secondly, the hard-working Executive Board, contributing original ideas and hours of labor. Under the competent leadership of co-editors, Senior Rich Mier, and Junior Jim Walsh, the members of the staff compiled news in an entertaining and informa- tive manner. The various events that were not too well known around the school were publicized for a new awareness in the student body. The editorial aspect of the paper brought attention to the areas of school life that needed correction or deserved reward. In the Veiled Prophet Parade early in the fall, the band represented the school and did a fine job under Drum Major, John Lane. Also, the band played at all the football games. If not the Whole band, at least a pep band lended music to cheering. In its annual Christmas Concert, the band traveled to Maplewood High School. Shortly afterward, C.B.C. played host to six other bands in a Music Evaluation Festival. The band practices two hours a week with section practices on Wednesday. There is also a dance band which practices on Friday, and a more or less voluntary Pep Band which plays at home Basketball and pep rallies. This year the band combined with the Glee Club, the Dramatics Club, and St. Joseph's Academy to put on the Lads and Lassie's, an annual event. In a military respect, the band performs at all parades and inspections held during the year, including the Spring and Fall Reviews. Mr. Eckels directs Band at mock election. The first public appearance, at Maplewood High School's Auditorium, the club, without the assistance of a girl's chorus, performed exception- ally well considering the time for practice. Then on April 25 the combined clubs of St. Joseph's and C.B.C. put on their Spring Concert. From Brahms to Standing on the Corner the group sang and danced the concert through. All in all the concert was an overwhelming success. Also a special thanks to Sister Harriet Jeanne for her part in training the girls. ll 1 2 l, yr , , 3 W ? In the production Crime in the Streets, senior Bill Jones took the lead role of Frankie and did an outstanding job. The play was a one act adapta- tion of The Man with the Golden Arm. Next, the cast travelled to Nerinx Hall for a com- mand performance before a school assembly. After this successful presentation, the play, with the help of Brother Hugh, was entered in the State Drama Competition and received a superior rating. Sal DiCarlo received an excellent rating for his fine performance. I 5 Speech and Debate C.B.C. concluded a good season in the Catholic lnterscholastic Speech League competition with the final meet on February 14. The debaters won first place honors in the final contest. The Speech Team won many fine ribbons for individual efforts in the C.I.S.L. oratory. The most outstanding of the speechsters was James Walsh, a junior, who took ribbons in all three contests and was awarded a silver medal for the season in the field of Extemporaneous Speaking. Other winners of individual ribbons were: Joseph Barera, and Paul Rottermund, juniors, and Robert Mansco, a sophomore. The topic which gave the C.B.C. Debate Team many a headache and much hard work before they com- pleted the season was: That Nuclear Weapons Should be Controlled By an International Organ- izationf' This same topic was used throughout the entire year. The debate squad featured Ron Igou, the lone senior, and John Brock, Greg Krupp, and Tom Ryan, all junior. XJ X f . ,. JA ,f 2 y--I Seated, from left: John Brock, Jules Miller, Ron Igou. Both squads travelled to Columbia, Missouri, to take part in the University of Missouri Invitational Speech and Debate Meet, and in this contest C.B.C. team members took second, third, and fourth places. The orators had a very busy schedule, including many workshops and exhibition appearances. The Speech and Debate squads were invited to participate in a student Congress, held at St. Louis University High School during the Christ- mas Holidays. The Congress was divided into two houses, the Senate, and the House of Repre- sentatives. Senators were James Walsh and Joseph Barera, House representatives were Tracy Beckette, Tom Casey and Mark Vogel. The Cadet orators did very well and accumulated a large number of points. Brother Hugh was the moder- ator and coach of the Speech and Debate teams, and he contributed much in helping the teams to make a fine showing in all of their endeavors. And each year the banquet proves to be an even greater success, Unlike many other events, the alumni banquet is held in such renowned places as: La Chateau, The Chip 8a Plank Room, and numerous other restaurants. This year's banquet, held at La Chateau, was truly the best ever. The main speaker this year was Jack Buck, the famous sports announcer of many of St. Louis' major sports. His jovial personality and sports background provided an evening of en- tertainment which all enjoyed. Mr. Klemm also spoke a few words to his past students. All enjoyed this evening of getting together with past team-mates, friends, and life long companions. 7? ii? 'W , ',, , 11 254, - V' , xi J' 4 sf AX 9- K. A record-breaking high was reached in the number of loans taken out and conse- quently, in the amount of money loaned. Some of the big factors accounting for this sudden need of money were: Christmas presents, Junior rings, and the Prom. Another cause for the big increase was the extended hours of the organization. It was open every day before and after school. The philanthropec mission of the Bank this year was the co-sponsoring, with the Scholarship Committee, of an Essay Contest. C.B.C.'s Golden Era Continues The pressure was on this years team to continue the undefeated record. District selections had graduated, Mr. Kersting had left for a college coaching job and C.B. now had a 27-0 football record to contine. There was a great challenge for the team. When the McKinley game rolled around, the team was ready and proved this by rolling over their opposition. The real challenge came with the Southwest game. No one can ever forget how the team came back in the second half to beat the Longhorns. Then, when we played Vianney, we met our fate, for the teams dueled to a scoreless tie. The next game proved to be the breakerg Althoff beat us and broke our winning streak, but the backing that the team received from the student body was terrific. Against Helias, we made our comeback and won in the second half after a hard fought first half. with Fine 6-2-1 Record Quincy proved to be an easy victory for the team. De Andreis also fell to the Fighting Cadets. Ole' C.B. then met their rival forces from Oakland Avenue. S.L.U.H. was one of the best teams in the area and they proved it by a victory over us. We fought hard and again had one of our great goal-line stands to end the first half. But we could not get rid of goalitis, which seemed to be our problem all day. After losing this game to the Junior Bills it was really hard for our team to come back the next week for our final game with Augustinian. Coach Gerdemann told the team that there were a lot of good football teams, but that only great teams could come back. In keeping with the spirit of all great schools, we trounced the Braves, thus finishing a fine season. Win, Lose, or tie, our Gridiron Cadets gave 1 100729. After watching our var- sity tie Vianney, the Bee's took our revenge out on their Bee team. The long jir1x of C.B.C.'s Bee teams continued with a hard-fought loss to Assumption. Mehlville and St. Louis proved to be the Bee's next victims. Again the Bee team took revenge, this time against Althoff. Finally Rosary and Mercy, who were rumored to have good teams, were defeated by Mr. Martin's Bee's. Under the able leadership of William Klemm, the team began the rugged workouts in early August, and continued into November. Cross Country consists of a two mile run over hills and creeks, and through woods. The first five men from each team are assessed points ac- cording to their place, and the team with the low score wins. This year's senior stars are Captain Rich Mier, John Lane, and Dick Fox, who led the squad to a winning season. The high point in the season was the District Meet at Normandy, where the Cadets finished a respectable 14th out of 32 schools. This team will win some games you won't expect them to win, but they will also lose some games you wouldn't expect them to lose. These were the words spoken by Mr. Christian at the beginning of the season. How true these words were to be. Under the tutoring of Mr. Wilcutt, our team finished off with 10 in a row, before ending the season in overtime on a spectacular 70 ft. football toss in the finals of the Webster regional to the host team. But highlighting the season were victories over Ritenour, Ma- plewood, two Kansas City teams, and double victories over St. Louis, the first time in the last ten years. There was a fourth place finish in the DuBourg tourney, and a second in the Regionals. Honors went to Captain Jim Healey. He was voted to the All-Suburban first team, All-Independent, All-Metro Second team, and Honorable Mention in the All-State voting. This team truly finished in fine CBC fashion, and can be proud of a fine 17-10 season. With many of this year's players back next year, we can expect much of the same next year. Their first real test was on Soccer Appreciation Night with DuBourg. The game was decided in the last minute of play on a goal by Tim McEvoy. The team did not taste defeat until the Semifinals of the Christmas Tour- nament when they were defeated by McBride. The Cadets had put together a 28 game winning streak which began late in the 1963-64 season. The Cadets got back on the winning way by humiliating the Baby Bills twice. The St. Louis High School Soccer League title was in the balance when the Cadets met Assump- tion. A tremendous team effort brought the title to CBC for the ninth time in eleven years. The District Championship was the final test for the Cadets, since the district title is equal to the state title in soccer. Fighting from behind they defeated Ladue 2-1. They then played DuBourg to a tie 0-0, lasting 8 overtimes. The next day they were rematched with DuBourg and defeated them on a goal by Tom Hutchinson and gained a berth in the finals against Mercy. A goal on a penalty kick by John Pisani 'proved to be enough as the Cadets won the title for the second year in a row and seventh time in ten years. This was the final high school game for the two senior starters on the team, Terry Michler and Rich Clay. Under the able leadership of co-captains Tracy Beckette and John O'Brien, the '64 - '65 swimming team boasted an eleven and five season, the best record yet attained by a C.B.C. swim team. Among our team's defeated opponents were: Normandy, McCluer, Ritenour, Western Military Academy, and Central. This year's team was highlighted by such juniors as Pete Darby, Bill Woods, Rick Brockman, and Mike Lanahan. Sophomore Jim Wahl set a new school record in the 200 yd. freestyle, and Paul Lodewyck broke the 400 yd. freestyle record. Its time for my Sardo bath. Watchout for fish!!!!! The varsity's dual meet record was six wins and seven losses. Al- though it was predominately a sophomore squad the team showed a strong desire to compete and win. In all levels of competition the squad won fifteen matches and lost seventeen matches. Highlight of the season was the entrance of a CBC wrestling team in state competition and dual victories over Hancock and Northwest. Individually, captains Al Simmering, Ray Neiner and Charles Gilbert accounted for winning twenty-four matches. Coaches Martin and Staub feel that with continued hard work and meet experience the team will contribute to the athletic prowess of CBC. - .-s , - -iv Y-A ' '-4: if E 3 ., .
