The spirit of progress which was an integral part of its foundation has become increasingly apparent in its operation today. We have expanded our facilities: physical as well as academic, athletic, and social. Our 'Faculty has increased, both in volume and in scholastic stature. ln general, C.B.C. is a school in a state of educational progression. This is necessary to function with the times, we advance in systems texts, laboratories, laboratory techniques, as well as individual responses. Given these tools our pro- duct, the Graduate, will greet the world with great spiritual, mental 81 physical vitality. The confluence of this, we wish to outline as a theme in the 64 GUIDON C.B.C. Jerome Francis, Mike McNift, Pat Kelley, Bob Signorelli, Gil Roosmann, Tom Fitzgerald, George Brennan, Greg Holzhauer, Bill Craddock, Roger Browning. This year's Legion of Mary, under the direction of Bro. Jerome Francis and Mr. Joseph Power, has been one ot the least known yet most active organizations around C.B.C. Members of the Legion are required to attend a weekly meeting at which the rosary is recited, spiritual readings from the Legion handbook are heard, reports on the previous week's work are given, and assignments for the coming week are handed out. The Legion- naires' assignments include visiting hospitals, teaching religion to public school students, visiting homes for the aged, and various other works of Catholic Action. .,, B.B.V.C. Dedicated to vocation analysis, as a mar- ried mon, single, or in the religious order, the Blessed Benildus Vocation Club is in its twentieth year. Through the efforts of our moderator, Brother Jeffrey, great speakers have appeared before the group and given their directives and perspectives on various vocations. Attendance has seriously ham- pered the functions of this worthwhile or- ganization and we're sure the future will show a marked improvement. N'-...A Mike Mazzoni, Guest speaker Bro. The proiect is being subsidized by grants to Washington University and is generously supervised by Dr. Falls B. Hershey, Dr. James Nelson, Brother Jeffrey Anselm, and Miss Gloria Johnson. This year three stu- dents are participating in the proiect which is designed to investigate the effects of mammary cancer in rats. The work they do is original research and is being used in correlation with the research being done by Dr. Hershey at Washington University. CBC'S 1963 Football Team on The Go! Presented with a great challenge, the 1963 Football Team came through, and did the iob. Before the season, most people felt that this was the year the bubble would break, we had one of the smallest teams, we had less talent as a group, and we had the pressure of keeping alive one of the area's longest and most respected win- ning streaks. Every team was up for us, some teams had only one goal in mind for their season, that was to beat C.B.C. We plowed through McKinley, McBride, Vianney, Quincy, Helios and Assumption. We had some close ball games with DeAndreis, Beaumont and S.L.U.H., but when the GOING GOT TOUGH, THE TOUGH GOT GOING and we came out NO. 1. ln the goal line stand against S.L.U.H. in which we repelled the JR. BILLS for 8 downs 74 within their own 20 yclrdline, the 1963 team did the iob it was presented with. A major factor in our success was the fine leadership given to us by Coaches Kersting, Gerdeman and Staub. Mr. Kersting and his staff taught us to be great players of the game of football and great players of the game of life. They showed us the value and rewards of sacrifice and hard work. They taught us, do everything in a NO. 1 way, to be a the NO. 1 team. The coaches strove to make us good, aggressive players on the field, and quiet, polite gentlemen off the field. We hope we can accomplish both. This team was the finest coached team in the Golden Era, and one of the top Football Teams at C.B.C. .. - IA l Il I-QM ,, ,-Tn The Mouse lifts a poss ogoinst S.L.U.H. This teamwas much better than its 1.3-11 rec- ord might indicate be- cause some tough breaks and a lack of confidence during the losing streak proved to have taken an unfortunate toll on the overall record. I-YN, if -1-rl-e The swimming team, under the coaching of Mr. Gerdemann, ended up with an 3-8-1 record. This is not a bad record considering the team's limited facilities and tough schedule. Contenders on the schedule were O'Fallon, Normandy, Ritenour, Lindbergh, SLUH, Beau- mont, and Western Military Academy. Special credit should be given to sophomore Pete Darby, who broke the standing school record in the 160 yd. individual medley with a time of 1:56. 89 Soccer . . . En route to their championship, which demonstrated their superiority over all Catholic cinder- men in Missouri, the Cadet relay teams set meet and school records in the 1140 yard relay and the mile relay. Jim Smith, Mike Piel, Don Usselman, and Austin Tinsley combined to sprint the quarter in 43.8 seconds. Even more impressive was the mile relay quartet of Tinsley and Usselman, John Hobold and Rick Balducci, as they shattered previous records by over 3 seconds, covering the route in 3:27. Other outstanding performances included 4th place finish in the 2 mile and 880 yard relays and 2nd places in the shuttle hurdles and 880 yard sprint medley.
