Members of the various religious orders as well as diocesan priests give the closed retreats to the CBC Cadets at Vaugirard. Steve Pieschel and Pete Houghton show how it's done. The boys take care of their own rooms and the other household chores during their three days at Vaugirard. Attentive response is a keynote of the retreats Leaving Chapel, George lggens, sacristan Bob l-loelscher fills the holy water fonts. them to a well known mulutary hugh school Although not fully aware of ut at the tume we were takung one of the most umportant steps of our luves For un September of that year we gave ourselves wholly to the Chrustuan Brothers These deducated men would be our guudes for the next four years Now at the end of our hugh school days we look back on our accomplushments both as a class and as unduvuduals Thus us the record of some of those that stand out most vuvudly un our munds Our Freshman Year When we arruved that September we were umpressed by the newness of the school by our fellow students and by those amaz ung Brothers Gradually we became settled only to be rudely awakened by those furst demeruts and that long walk that goes exactly nowhere And then agaun we were pleasantly delughted by that furst A We cannot now say that studues were duffucult they were just so dufferent and untruguung Only a freshman dreams of the days when he wull be able to speak Latun luke Brother or when he wull be able to arrange those x s and y s un the proper manner or even the days when he wull see the prophecues of a certaun World Hustory Teacher come true Englush Latun algebra world hustory they came we passed Sports became an umportant part of our luves We felt that we were at least partly responsuble for our great vuctory over our fruendly ruvals and for the truly great football season we enuoyed At the end of the year we had a great sense of accom plushment and understandable prude We had leaped the furst hurdle and the next lay ahead lt was our year of duscovery and plannung Our Sophomore Year A sophomore thunks he knows everythung Well maybe not everythung but we sure thought we dud Now old tumers were ready for almost anythung Many members of our class became untegral parts of our excellent extra currucular program We contrubuted members to all the athletuc teams and our own Bee football team had an undefeated season Many unnovatuons occurred thus year wuth the startung of the Student Bank and wuth a Sophomore Class goung on a closed retreat for the furst tume The value of thus retreat was soon seen un the overall attutude of the Class We wull always be grateful to the Brothers for makung thus opportunuty avaulable to us How to have fun an class we trued hard to fund out how to do ut thus year Our football class ll mean bualogy wuth Mr Kungl was most unformatuve l can stull dussect a frog ln our study of plane geometry Brother Muchael showed us all the trucks an educator needs to get a pount across We shall never forget hus board of educatuon hus trusty 36 Lead by our almost forgotten mascot wuth cherry bombs and wuld antucs we began the attack to break un one who was rela tuvely new to the Brothers and the teachung professuon un general the tumud recruut Brother J Charles We loved our soph Englush We lost teacher thus whole class arranged our desk lFrogs always showed through by tuny presents from the Our luttle hearts would burst wuth uoy as we neatly frog legs and dussected cray fush un a pule on hus and fush compluments of the buology classl two of our best fruends thus year In September Brother Joel dued and un January Brother Francus went to hus reward These two men who started us on our hugh school ca reers wull never be forgotten Because of theur personal sanctuty and theur fruendly manner of dealung wuth people we are sure thy have attauned a very hugh place un heaven May they rest un peace' When June came we were proud of ourselves and of our school Thus was our year of trual and we passed the tests wuth flyung colors Our .lumor Year The hughlught of our gunuor year was the wunnung of the Class L basketball crown for the furst tume The CBC Hu Pounters entered the state reguonals wuth on lmpressuve record and went to State wuth a 2l 4 entry Drawung McBrude for theur furst match the cagers handed them defeat by the uoyful margun of l7 pounts Next Lafayette fell prey wuth a decusuve loss The next contest was not only for the rught to contunue on the road to the State Champuonshup but also to avenge our prevuaus losses to our fruendly ruvals the Jr Bulls We handed them defeat un an unspured game marked by terrufuc cheerung to the tune of 69 48 Funally ut was the tume to really show our abulutues under fure and ut proved not too much trouble to tame the Joplun Eagles as we clupped theur wungs un a 76 63 vuctory Our Junuor Class had the honor of havung three of our class mates on the furst strung State Champuonshup team ln addutlon one of them was chosen MVP un the tournament Our most educatuonal class Thus tutle surely belongs to no other than Brother Charles Physucs Class What other groupung uncludes polutucal scuence what to talk about on a date lnaturally a slude rule and Archamedes pruncuplel how to make a good pony the art of constructung proyects posters made easy and last but assuredly not least Physucs We remember those tests, every last one of them lt wasn t that Brother used duf fucult words ut was just the many languages he used them un Ergo Zungo Plunko ummortal words these, they wull never cease to be part of our vocabulary Dress parades and those dust choked Wednesdays formed a memorable part of thus year They always came off well and gave our famulues a chance to see how well we were doung un a mulutary Iune ln May one of the most umportant events of the Edward Karst, Section Leader. .,,,T. 'Z' First organized in 1957 for the purpose of assisting the cadet officers in maintaining discipline and stopping infractions of school regulatons, the Guards' Platoon has finally obtained the respect of all students. This respect it has long deserved Csays the writerl. This year the Guards have come unto their own under the able guidance of Sgt. Leonard King. Together with Capt. Mike Murphy, Commander of the Guards, Sgt. King has completely reorganized the group, distributing direct leadership more widely by the formation of internal fire teams. Adding precision drill to their curricula, Sgt. King has molded the group to the point where they rival their older competitors, the Grenadiers and the Lancers. In addition to performing their everyday duties, the Guards have been honored this year by taking part for the first time in the Veterans' Day parade. Ross. They are a select group of cadets who have become pro- ficient in close order drill and certain related movements, All members of the Ross Lancers are five feet six inches or below, The Ross Lancers perform their precision movements at the Spring and Fall Reviews, and any other military function downtown. ln addition to the height required, Lancers are chosen especially for their military records and their marching skill. A total of 41 cadets comprise the Ross Lancers, Of this total, there are four eight man squads that account for 32 cadets. With them there are four officers who are selected from the ranks by popular vote of the members them- selves. The men also choose one drill master and one Guidon Bearer, ln addition to the foregoing 38 cadets, there are three supernumeries whose degree of training and skill enable them to fill the position of any member who is absent. Members of the Lancers practice for five days ci week, and for a half-hour between 0730 hours and OBOO hours. Through this continuous drill, the Ross Lancers are concentrating on being the No. l drill unit in the school. i -1--...... .t ,. , ,,.,,, , flf Honor Men 123 Come on Weenie' fm . Since their founding in l937, the Grenadiers have participated in the Fall and Spring Military Re- views, the annual Federa Inspection, and Gradua- tion Day exercises. They also serve as Honor Guard for the Archbishop in the Youth Day ceremonies at the Cathedral, This year they also acted as Special Honor Guard for Father Thomas English, CSC, a past Grenadier Commander CClass of l95Ol who, after being ordained at Holy Cross Seminary, Santiago, Chile, celebrated his first solemn Mass in the United States last November. The G-men are named jointly in honor of Brother Justinus Elzear who introduced the Mili- tary Program to CBC, and Brother Elzear Stephen who, for nearly AO years, was a member of the CBC faculty. Grenadier personnel are selected early in the school year and cadets who make the grade can be proud of that fact, for they represent the best of the Corps, Through the years, the Grenaidiers have main- tained the highest standards of neatness, discipline, and precision drill, This year has been no excep- tion as the Grenadiers have upheld the high degree of proficiency expected of them in all their ap- pearances. The Grenadiers use basic military formations, supplemented by such unique movements as the pinwheel and the distinctive Grenadier G. These and other precision movements give the unit a well-balanced drill presentation. -gk-0 A XJ ea , 'Il 8' 'I P, Q '39 1 0 P nb . K. g:,. Q veg-Xa. G A Q , 4- 1 ' 1 wa. 'Lx , 4 . .b ,..f,,. . . These are the words of Brentwood's Coach John Lauer. Going into the toughest regional in the State, University City, the Cadets sported a somewhat unimpressed record. CBC was seeded Number 2, but showed that that was a mistake as the Hi-Pointers went all the way! First victim was Brentwood, 74-43. Garrison was high with 27 points. Next come the Uni- versity City lndians who were big but after the contest joined Brentwood in the Cadets' list of victims. Final score was 43-33. Then came the final regional game against Maplewood. To put it in the words of the Daily Paper, Last night CBC's basketball team exploded with a blast that could be heard as tar as Washington U., site of the state Class L tournament next week, when the Cadets turned on an awesome display of power to win the regional championship at University City by the score of 69-40. Then came the big time. Schools from all over the state would play, but the papers read, CBC Quintet Rates Favorite Role in State Class L Meet. This came mainly because of the experience CBC had: Garrison made the trip to State four times and Redd and Strange thrice each. First to be met and conquered were the Bull- dogs of Sumner by the score of 63-53. Garri- son again was high point man with 21, he also grabbed 26 rebounds-one more than the entire Sumner team together. Mike McCotter followed Garry with 18 points. The uniformed Cadet Corps then journeyed to the Washington University Fieldhouse to meet an outstate team from Chillicothe who boasted a 29-1 record. Chillicothe had come to meet the Cadets by defeating North Kansas City the previous night, but the big balanced power of CBC proved to be too much. Five Cadets scored in double figures, headed by Garrison and Freihaut with 20 each. The Big Team made good 34 of its 68 shots. Garrison also collected 20 rebounds, though for awhile it didn't look like he would play long enough to do that. He drew his third foul with just 10:20 gone in the game, and sat out the rest of the half. Freihaut and McCotter each drew a third foul before the half ended. CBC quickly extended its lead in the third quarter to put a victory out of reach of Chillicothe, which had a 20- game winning streak. At the conclusion of the contest the scoreboard showed the Cadets ahead, 80-58. Crystal City then rose to attempt to de- throne the '59 State Champs. One of the main attractions of the night was a duel between Kneeling: Rich Keenoy, managerj Jerry Strange, Bart Freihaut, Garry Garrison, Jim Redd, Mike McCotter, David Sanders, manager. Standing: Brother Julius, Moderator, Ken Butler, Gene Baker, John Archer, William Kniest, George Laurence, Roger Ammann, Jim Prow, Coach D. C. Wilcutt. CBC RETAI S CLASS L CROW Garry Garrison and Crystal City's Bill Bradley. The general opinion was: As Bradley goes, so goes Crystal City. Garrison held Bradley, the Cadets held the other four Hornets and CBC triumphed, 77-6l, Then came our second chance to a second straight Missouri State Class L Championship. Opponents were none other than our rivals from down on Oakland Avenue. The Cadets started off just as they had the previous games in the tournament, hitting quickly and taking a good-sized lead. Jim Redd and Garrison opened with baskets and Garrison made it 5-O before the Junior Bills could break the ice. Garrison then scored two quickies for a 9-2 CBC lead. Mike McCotter and Jerry Strange now combined for three points and when the Championship CBC C61 l FG FT F Freilhaut ...... ........... ..... 2 2 l Redd ........... ........ 2 O l Garrison ..... ........ l 2 5 5 Strange ..... ..... 4 2 2 McCotter ...... ..... 3 3 5 Prow ........... ..... Serious foul trouble came in the latter part of the second quarter when Garrison gathered his second and third personal. A rebound shot by Garry made the half score, 30-26. ln the second half, the Junior Bills never threatened and the final score was CBC 6l-St. Louis 49. Garrison was credited with 29 rebounds against 20 forthe whole St. Louis team. Garri- son was also high with 29 points. Strange had IO, McCotter 9, Freihaut 6, Redd 4 and Prow 3. The Christmas Star, the Star of Victory, came into view this Christmas week, hovered over CBC, hesitated not a moment, then settled down there, spreading its warmth into the heart of every Brother and Cadet, with the news that Mr. Robert Horgan and his boys had won their fifth consecutive Soccer Christmas Championship Tournament. Soccer is a tradition at CBC and it is followed with keen interest by Brother Bernard and all the faculty. Con- gratulations to Mr. Horgan and his team for polishing off this bright and highly prized trophy in such fine style. Their victory is well earned and surely deserved. Here are the ABCs of the tournament: KA? aggressive Ability KB? Bob Horgan . . . 'nuf said CCD Confidence . . . This Championship team has that quality, the opposition senses it instantly, it gives our team the edge. There were three rounds of play for the championship, the first against its tough and experienced DeAndreis team. This was an exciting game, won by one goal during the overtime play-off. We were playing footsy with Lady Luck that day, and she smiled on us for sure. And that big lrish smile warmed everybody in reach! The second round we Seminary. The Cadets proved to be better mud'ders than the boys in black. This was a real squashy victory, 4-O. You can be sure Christian courtesy was forgotten that day . . . that the boys rushed in where angels fear to tread. met the men from the Prep The third and final game, the Hornets tangled with the tough Laboure High in which the game was very tight ,until the Cadets broke it wide open with two goals to win their fifth straight Christmas Soccer Tournament. Another year, another trophy added to the glittering array so prominently displayed at CBC. Five CYC Christmas tourneys, five consecutive wins. Oh, the monotony of it! There's an old solid sport's slogan that goes like this: Any team looks good when they're winning, and that's why Mr. Horgan's Soccer Team always look good, all they do is win. Just a simple statement of fact. Now the spotlight turns on Mr. Robert Horgan, coach of this well-organized group. Whether he is pounding his rubber heels along the echoing corri- dors of CBC and turning in at 402, or digging his cleats into the frozen turf, he is equally confident: master of the classroom and on the athletic field. Handsome, rugged, alert, athletic looking, it is the air of competency that exudes from this man. He is a hard task-master but a fair one, and his boys go all out for him. Why, there's not an unbruised shin among them. He asks no more of his players than he is willing to do himself. Full credit it due him. After several disappointing seasons, the Swim Team finally came through with a good record. Several of their wins were posted over top-rated schools. The upward trend in victories was due to an all-around team effort and especially to the blossoming of several of Coach Tine's fish into stars. Absence next year of Riesmeyer, Glarner and Hilbert, who formed the 200-yd. freestyle relay, will be felt, but with a great percentage of the team coming back, it is predicted by many that a state team is evidently on the way. Among the returning swimmers are Mackie McCollum and Jerry Fabian, who - between them - won four events in almost every meet. Gabe Csengody who broke Ross' old breast-stroke record will also be back. Others include John Wolfberger, Ron Cox, Dan O'Neil, George Durbin, Pot Blake, Bill Stover, and Joe Hanneken. Potentially, Coach Tines' team could be great. Barring injuries it could' go all the way and bring the first state crown in this water sport to CBC. Laurels won this year included a second place in the Catholic meet, 8th out of the l6 teams in the U. City Relays, and 8th place in the 33 team State Meet. Charles, moderator, and Chuck Steib, president, has much to its credit at the end of another pros- perous school year. lts Scholarship Committee spon- sored a successful Current Events contest in addition to awarding its two annual Student Council scholar- ships. Money was raised through successful operation of the Chevron concession stand at the football games. For the second year, the Council sponsored Sunday afternoon sock hops which were held, this year, after the Mercy and St. Louis Uni- versity High football games, and after the St. Louis University High and DuBourg basketball games. The hops, run each time by a different department of the Student Council, were one of the most profitable ventures undertaken this year. Funds raised by the sock hops were used to finance new uniforms for the basketball and football teams. During the Christmas season, the Student Council backed the clothing and canned goods drive for the poor. ln addition to these obvious ac- complishments, the SC has been re- sponsible for and has fulfilled its obligation of giving the student body a voice in school affairs and in bringing about many other minor changes. STUDENT BA K The CBC students have come to regard the Student Loan Association as a common fixture around the school, a fact which is certainly not true. The bank is unique. lt is one of the few successful high school organizations of its kind anywhere. With its revised constitution and its lO-member Board of Directors, the bank has completed its third successful year of operation. Each member of the Board, fulfilling certain specified duties, has insured smooth operation. Low interest rates, fine publicity, and convenient location have done much to encourage business among the student body. The Bank, which in its early hectic days was regarded as more or less ofa novelty by the cadets, has settled down to regular operation. Tendencies of customers this year has been toward fewer loans but of larger sums. The bank, located in Room 204, Monday through Thursday before school and Friday after class, has estimated a l5'Mn dividend for stock-holders at the completion ofthe l959-60 business year. And, at the football games, it was a main attraction. Main objectives of these organizations is to fur- ther the young men's education through music. From, these dummies the layout men, Bob Stoessel and Melvin Benoist, took several ideas and incorporated them in this i960 edition of the Guidon. Since they are not concentrated but scattered widely throughout the book, their use adds to the readability of the yearbook. The format, determination of the editors to edit copy thoroughly, adherence to the rules of style-CBC style, that is--contribute to making this 1960 Guidon well worth the effort expended. Two major changes were made this year in Guidon business. For the first time in its history, lower classmen are on the staff, Their experience will aid them greatly when they take over the reins of editing. Second change was in the sales depart- ment where all cadets received billing for the book. Each year has seen an increase in the orders. This year, under the new system, more than 800 copies were ordered. Only those who requested books, will receive them this year. Every effort has been made to have an ac- curate account of the school year at CBC. Both serious and humorous interpretation are made of the many candid shots throughout the book. This has been the editors' privilege for all years. Nine- teen sixty is no exception. All in all, the editors feel that they are giving you a book that is different in many respects from those of yesteryear. The one idea in the minds of the editors and others associated with this book was that the 1960 Guidon be treasured by all those getting a copy. On the last Friday of the month at 9:15 A.M., it is a familiar sight to see a cadet walking down the corridor to his second period class, books and Turret in hand, with his eyes glued to the latest edition. The newspaper's excellent bal- ance of news, features and sports keeps the student body well in- formed and entertained. ln this line, the paper contains many unique columns and features un- available in many high school pub- lications. Due to Brother Hubert Gerard's successful journalism classes, the editors have been blessed with a well-trained and competent report- ing and writing staff. Under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Dave Hess, The Turret's dual News Ed- itors, Jim Collum and Jack Cooley, present the news in an entertain- ing easy-to-read style, usually cov- ering the first two or three pages of the paper, Following logically, the next sec- tion falls into the capable hands of Chuck Steib, Sports Editor. Since the sports pages are read thor- oroughly and enjoyed by all cadets. they must do a good job of relating CB's losses and victories, not to mention sidelines on the school's teams, coming athletic contests and, of course, the Player of the Month column which tells the tale of senior members of the Varsity teams who have merited recogni- tion. Jim Taszarek has command of the feature page, the purpose of which is to express the voice of the students. Besides timely edi- torials on topics of interest to all cadets, Jim edits feature articles compiled by the news staff. The pages of The Turret are also enlivened by the traditional Senior of the Month column, purpose of which is to immortalize monthly a deserving member of the Senior Class who has merited this recog- nition by four years of hard work. In addition, the Seeing I pro- vides sidelights of school life, and Mike Peters adds a humorous note to The Turret with his comical in- terpretation af things around school. Let's not forget Art LeGare, who is responsible for the paper's photographic excellence without which The Turret would seem quite dull, and Jolly John Pohl, circula- tion editor. But, most of all acknowledg- ments go to Brother Hubert Gerard and Brother Kenneth Edmund, moderators, without whose hard work and patience The Turret could not exist. Under their di- rection, Dave Hess and his editors have been able to continue The Turret tradition in i959-60 and have teamed with the staff of trained writers and reporters in turning out a journalistic publica- tion worthy of the students and faculty of Christian Brothers Col- lege Military High School. .v J SKBTKOT Noqv Otvzte, acl Dave Hess ews 590 Editor-in-Chief 'tor Jim Taszarek Feature Editor 0' 4 0999 of D W' s 96' 6or0.i:G're THE T RRET ST TTS Freshmen: Dennis Walker, Fred Speckmann, Gary Gebhardt, Rich- ard Lilie, Tim Ayers. Better than previous years, the club has thus far sur- passed all other Science Clubs of the past in both numbers of members and in work done. More facilities were made available to members working on either a Science Fair project or on a project for class use. Membership requirements were upped to include stress on good scholarship in other subjects in addition to the scientific courses being followed, Further, members must be willing to devote spare time to working on their projects. Science films were shown at each meeting of the Club, each of the films pertaining to a different topic. Along with this at each meeting, a new topic was outlined and discussed by the members.
