Inspired Courtesy of Massie-Missouri Resources Division Through the years and under three flags, St. Louis has been the cultural and commercial leader of the Midwest. The city has grown from a fur trapping base, first settled in 1764, to the eighth largest city in the United States. With the decline of the fur trade, Mississippi River steamboats brought new prosperity and made St. Louis the chief supply depot for the new frontier: the West. lndustry came next and with it the railroads, permanently establish- ing the Mound City as a commercial metropolis outranked by few other American cities. St. Louisans proudly recall the founding here in 1808 of the first newspaper west of the Mississippi, a Jesuit college, forerunner of St. Louis University, in 18187 the founding of Washington University in 1853, and the establishment of Christian Brothers College in 1851.
