The city has grown from a fur trapping base, first settled in 1764, to the eighth largest city in the United States. With the decline of the fur trade, Mississippi River steamboats brought new prosperity and made St. Louis the chief supply depot for the new frontier: the West. lndustry came next and with it the railroads, permanently establish- ing the Mound City as a commercial metropolis outranked by few other American cities. St. Louisans proudly recall the founding here in 1808 of the first newspaper west of the Mississippi, a Jesuit college, forerunner of St. Louis University, in 18187 the founding of Washington University in 1853, and the establishment of Christian Brothers College in 1851. Student Council This year's Student Council was surely an outstanding organization con- cerning achievement. ln addition to many detailed accomplishments around CBC, it provided the entire student body with an efficient loan system. The Student Bank was one of the major year-round functions of this organization. With the expert advice of Brother Joseph, the various projects were carried out in an orderly and proficient manner. This skeleton of the student body completed many small changes for the comfort of the cadets. One of the more inspiring projects was that of providing a full scholar- ship to CBC for some deserving eighth grade student. Candidates for the scholorship were to have been judged by the Student Council's Executive Board. Generally the Council through the agency of the five committees, Rules, Student Bank, Athletics, Student Activities, Publications, made everyday life at CBC more pleasant for everyone I8 e x ,.,, f i 8 James Monika, Student Banker, stands ready to do business with Art McManus, Pat King and Stephen Pieschel. The school seemed to be bursting at the seams with confused, lost freshmen. The Brothers were probably just as nervous as we were when we stumbled into our first homeroom. They tried to organize our schedule, inform us of the schooI's policies and give us confidence to go on to the next class, all in one hour. We can look back at the many trials and troubles we had: our first inspection when the inspecting officer couldn't believe we left our belt at home, our first but not, alas, our last, Latin testi and, of course, our first demerit. Going back to the innocent freshman year, we can also recall the joys that only a freshman could enjoy: Such oddi- ties as an A in Religion, a study period at military, or getting one's name in the Daily Bulletin. Now that it is all over, we can look back on those heroic seniors who taught us the fundamentals of military, who struggled to march 40 freshmen in three inches of snow, and who sheltered us from other seniors trying to give us their M-1 at parades. Our first impression upon entering CBC was that of alarm. Being separated from the Sisters for the first time and being put in the clutches of men twice our size, was quite a shock. Some of us panicked and lost all confidence. Others sat down and went to work on their studies and did their best. Still others took hold of the situation and achieved greater heights than they themselves expected. We, as freshmen, were innocent, ignorant and ignored, but we made up for it as sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR We knew it all, or thought we did, when we reached our second year. We had passed that crucial freshman ordeal and decided that the school and everything con- cerned with it was ours. The military program was our personal novelty, the five classes we attended each day were used mainly to plan the future assassination of our Company CO, and our after school hours were spent cutting up the neighborhood cats for biology. This cryptic hallucination was shattered after six weeks, or when the first marking period grades came out. All seemed lost! The Brothers just didn't seem to realize that we had other things to do besides study. But when all seemed a failure, the wonderful guidance of our homeroom Brothers instilled in us the idea that all was not lost, and, if we changed our ways a little, our grades might improve. It was during this time that so many of us were stricken with Sophomoritis. This is a disease which does not hurt or pain, but does give certain people a sense of superiority and greatness. Of course, only Sophomores can enjoy the sensation. We often wondered during that Sophomore Year why everyone else in school seemed so inferior. In the course of the second year, our natural athletes sprang into existence. Many of us, outgrowing our shyness, joined various teams around the school and found a new and worthwhile pastime. Athletics proved very interesting and taught us the fundamentals of certain sports, plus the important virtue of sportsmanship. Others joined the Science Club, Speech Club, Library Club, The Turret, and many of the other outstanding extra- curriculars about the campus. Our spiritual life was strengthened in the Knights of the Divine Child, and frequent reception of Holy Com- munion in the Chapel became part of our regular schedule. All in all, our Sophomore Year became the symbol of our real awareness of growing up. Now we were children no longer. It would be our duty during this year, and for the rest of our high school years, to make men of ourselves. The Brothers, using their valuable experience, aided us in this endeavor. Then after nine months of study and an active school life, we were given the green light to move ahead to our next step in our high school career -OUR JUNIOR YEAR. As juniors we became more and more interested in the events concerning CBC. School spirit seemed to blossom out everywhere, as the rest of the school followed the ex- ample of the seniors. Studies became more involved. Such trivial subjects as Algebra II, Religion III, English III and, of course, physics, became so intriguing that we spent hours and hours of study on them at home. fl must admit that of all the sub- jects taken during our junior year, PHYSICS takes my award. While studying it, I learned bits of German, a little philosophy, Church History, and the Brother Charles' Thesis on World Affairs. We spent more time at home trying to figure out what Brother Charles said in one hour, than we did on anything eIse.J Sports became a big item that year. It seemed that victory was the most common word in the newspapers in regard to CBC. Our undefeated football team, State bas- ketball team, District Champ soccer team, and undefeated track team, shared honors equally when the sports season was over. Military became more important to us as we realized that our job as future leaders at CBC was about to reach is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tr The enior tory its apex the following year. Yes, we were learning and, for our own sake, we hoped that we were learning right. SENIOR YEAR Class of 1958-yes, that was our title as seniors for those nine wonderful months. The year started as do all senior years with Officer Candidate School. Then as classes began and we figured that this was IT, many strange things happened. Along with the usual happenings around the campus, we were astounded by the fact that we, as seniors, held much responsibility in both military and academic matters. We were the one who would be the co-captains of the various athletic teams: we were the ones who would be the officers of all the activities around the school: we were the ones who would be the Cadet Officers in military: and, as we found out, we were the ones who would take the reputation of Christian Brothers College and try to raise it to even greater heights. We represented CBC on a television show, explaining to the listening audience the three phases of education at the school: the scholastic, the military and the religious. Extracurriculars became more and more active, with each group working on its diversified proiects and ideas in the hope of accomplishing more good for the CBC Cadets. This they did very well. Perhaps the most active of the clubs in this regard was the Student Council. Through its hard work, two scholarships to CBC were awarded, the Student Bank was founded, and the revised Buzz Book was published. The Turret changed its format and recap- tured its pre-eminence among the high school papers of the city. The Blessed Brother Benildus Vocation Club re- instituted the idea of a Mass at 7:40 a.m. once a month for the seniors. Our sports program was highlighted by a fine football team, State basketball team, trophy-winning soccer team and a very fine track squad. Many other events such as the Father-Son Banquet, the Officers' Luncheon, the Military Prom, Final Promotions, Brother Ambrose's English tests, Map Reading tests, chem- istry homework, all these and many more can be recalled to our advantage, in our process of becoming men. But now it is over. Our job has been given us and we have tried to the best of our ability to finish the task satis- factorily. All who started did not finish their career at CBC. We have lost in death three of our classmates: Tony Meyer, Tom Sexton and Dan Pfister. Maybe they won't be on the stage with us on Graduation Day, but in spirit they will, because our class is one and always will be one until the last of us has died. We will not forget those three members of our class, nor will we forget the two dedicated Brothers, who gave their lives to God during our Senior Year. Brother Joel and Brother Francis were a large inspiration to us in life and we shall not forget them in death. We thank the Brothers for their unsurpassed helps to us in our difficulties, and we thank God for giving us the chance to attend CBC! To all those who read these words, l can say this: Maybe there will be other Senior Classes with better ath- letes than we had, or better scholars, or better leaders, but add these three groups together and you will never arrive at any answer other than the Class of '58. -Jim Mittino Remember? RIGHT: Oops, wrong team! BELOW: Give me a 'C'. Beginning another football season and a hard one for CBC with a comparatively new team. Most of the men of last year's varsity had left the campus for college grounds. Only two of last year's undefeated and untied cham- pions, co-captains Dick Musial and Denny Reinhart, re- turned as lettermen. They outplayed themselves and did their best to bolster the others. But inexperience proved the Cadets' worst enemy. Time and again, CBC went to pay-dirt, only to lose the ball on fumbles. Two of these bungles set up both McKinley's scores. Only in the second half did the Cadet eleven seem to catch fire as they slashed and ripped their way the length of the field to score their lone six points. The game was disastrous in more ways than the loss, for from the opening contest, CBC was unable to field a team not riddled by injuries. s CBC 33 ROOSEVELT 13 In the season's second contest, our foes, the Roosevelt Rough Riders were favored. One of the reasons for this was the fact that we had lost our first game. However, that initial loss brought us to realize that while playing a good, clean game, we must also play hard. Victory in this game may be attributed partially to the fine runs made by Dick Musial, Bill Otten, and Charlie Sapienza. Just as Dick had shown his ability in the sea- son's opener, so in this second contest, he seemed to blos- som. One of the highlights of the evening was his 65 yard T. D. run. Otten's gallop was shy 'IO yards of match- ing Musial's but did pay off in a score. Finals for the evening showed CBC 33, Roosevelt 13. UPPER LEFT: Let go! Get your own ball! UPPER RIGHT: T.D.-bound. Fans in the stands. CBC 12 DUBOURG C DuBourg's team was strong last year and was suppose: to be even better this season. As a result of last season' close contest between the two teams lwe emerged victor ious, 'I4-122 it was expected that this year would be nc exception. But the Cadets, inspired by their Roosevelt win, went oi to crush the Crusaders, 12-6. Musial and Sapienza strengthened their records by do ing the scoring for us in this one, too. A highlight o this contest was Jackie Haugh's quick-kick for 60 yards. Play was rough and tumble with the men of DuBourg really pushing all the way but their best wasn't goo: enough for the King's men. ,Lui :f f l, UD' 'Q 1 , ff-wk, .W x f i '4 ' K f 49 ,-H212 X at , mg 1-A T fi! ff., . ....q?y f 4 Jfw' w 1 . Another of the junior members of our varsity squad unquestionably proved his worth to the team. The man in reference is Bill Eigel who cut loose for several 30 and 40 yard runs. This was one of his best, if not the best game that he has played. Co-captains, Dick Musial and Denny Reinhart, couldn't do much in this game, as Denny was in- jured and Dick was well bottled up by the Assump- tion players. Jim O'Rourke was also injured during the action of this encounter. It was the bitterness of the weather that in- fluenced the quantity of the crowd but the quality of the spirit that was present was not hampered in the least. CBC 6 UNIVERSITY CITY 20 Yes, that was the final result as the Cadets landed on the short end of the scoring. The Cadets, who after defeating SLUH, and just a week later dropping a close one to Assumption, were trying desperately to bring victory to the homecoming crowd at CBC. U. City struck pay dirt first and led from there on in. The Cadets who were trailing by 'I4 points at the half, came back to score in the third quarter on a pass from quarter-back Jackie Hough to right- end Bob Steiert for their lone tally. The Indians then put a finishing touch on the game by pushing another mate across the goal line. The Cadets thus ended their season with a record of 3 wins, 5 losses, l tie. f 'N ,f l 'S X f I ARRL . , Top Right: Bill Eigel, CBC quarterback, didn't sneak far or fast enough in this one against SLUH. Not quite in gear yet, they lost 12-O. Following this upset came the Irish of McBride. Getting into the swing of things, the Klemm-coached lads took this one, 7-0. Next came St. Mary's and another win for the Cadets, 18 - 0. The Cees continued their winning ways, taking Cleveland Public, 7 - 0. SLUH Cees broke the skein, 6 - 0. They plowed through their opponents with- out let-up, compiling an eight and zero record. Under the excellent coaching of Mr. John Findley, the team had a powerful defense to go with their strong offense. The backfield consisting of Jerry Strange at quarterback, Rich Block at fullback and Fred Dashman and Mike Leonard in the halfback slots combined power and speed for their scores. With the exception of the Ritenour game, the Cadets scored almost at will against their opponents, while holding the foe to very few scores. In at least three of the games, the Bees completely routed their opponents with tricky plays, gaining most of their scores with long runs. First and foremost, his team com- piled a very fine record of 14 wins and 8 losses with a green team, and secondly he built the squad into a po- tentially strong machine which should yield many victories in the years ahead. This year's team was composed mostly of underclassmen with just three seniors-Jim Mercurio, Charlie Guimbarda and Marty Hadican-on the squad. They formed the nu- cleus of the team and led the others to a iustifiably good season. And yet, followers of the Cadets at one time or another did not see anyone but sophomore and iuniors on the floor. High scorer for the Cadets was six foot one inch Gary Garrison. Young Garrison, only a sophomore, was not expected to do much to help the team. However, he im- proved slowly and surely throughout the season and de- veloped into a fine scorer, averaging about 'I4 points a game and was a tower of strength on the backboards all season long. He reached his peak in our first encounter with our friendly rivals from Oakland Avenue, scoring 24 tallies in a losing effort. The team reached its peak, seemingly, in the Normandy Tournament. They entered the tourney with a string of five consecutive victories. Their first opponent was the always powerful University City who, at that time, had one of the better teams hereabouts. Leading by as many as 'I6 points at one time in the period, the Cadets completely outplayed the lndians in the first quarter. At the end of the third period, the whole starting five fouled out and midway of the fourth quarter, U. City caught up with the inexperienced underclassmen and went on to win, 59-54. The Cadets then won the first two games of the consolation bracket, defeating Lindbergh and Riverview Gardens, only to lose to St. Charles, defending State Champions and winners of the 1958 Suburban League title. The iniury to Charlie Guimbarda in mid-season was ex- pected to hurt the Cadets quite a bit but the splendid play of Bill Eigel, Phil Noser, Jerry England and Jerry Strange made up for Charlie's loss. All four plus Gary Stilt Garri- son will be back next year. At the time of writing this article, the Cadets were entered in the Clayton Regional Tournament. We know that they will make a creditable showing. If they were to go on to the State Tournament the season would be most successful. Potentially, they have the ability to do it. Congratulations to Mr. D. C. Wilcutt, our extraordinary basketball coach, and to the team for a very successful season. 104 Two! One which usually gets little is the Cee Basketball squad. This year, however, we cannot help but note the extraordinary record it has compiled. It has been a long time since any team equalled that record but if the Cees continue to develop it may not be too long before another team will do as well. a Mr. John Kersting, who has proved himself a capable coach in other sports, scores ag again in basketball. Full credit can be given to no one-man, rather, joint effort is the only explanation for an extra-special season. Some of the Cee starters were Freihaut with 748 points who also led the team in rebounds, Beth, with 722 points, was also top scorer in one-third of the games, Baker, who tallied 83 points, Johnson with an average of 5 points a game, counted 76 points, White, team leader in 4 games, with 68 points and DeClue who racked up 54 points this season. These were the nucleus of the team this year. What is the record, you ask. Well, out of 75 encounters CBC emerged victorious in all but one. Now all that remains to be said is Congrats to Coach Kersting and the Cee team for a job well done! Bees Have .667 Season Unsung heroes might be an appropriate name for this squad of boys who play their hearts out week after week before a minority crowd only to be over-shadowed by a varsity team. The Bees' hopes seemed pretty glum when they dropped three out of their first four games, to DuBourg, Mercy and St. Mary's with a win over Normandy sand- wiched in the string. Then the team bounced back to overpower Southwest, St. Louis U. High, Soldan and Central to brigten up the overcast sky. Paced by Joe Mimlitz and Mike McCotter the team continued in the winning column running over Beau- mont, St. Louis U. again, Assumption, Laboure, Lutheran, St. Francis Borgia and Priory. The only set-backs in this period of play were from Chaminade, Sumner and a two-point loss to DeAndreis. The starting five was composed of Mimlitz, Mike Mc- Cotter, John Archer, John Butler and Jim Prow who paced the team for their 'I2-6 record. Remainder of the roster provided ardent support and keen competition resulting in an ever keener starting quintet. Pace-setters for the team were high point man, Mim- litz with 230 points, McCotter with 200 points, and Archer with 110 points. The Concert Band aims at a basic objective: the furtherance of its members' knowledge and artistry in the universal medium of music. A well-disciplined organization, it demands of all its musicians regularity and cooperation and subordination of indivdual talent to the success of the whole group. Mr. Fred Eckels has iust completed his first year of firm and respected conducting of the Concert Band. No traditionalist, he enlivens his musi- cians and his audience with the selection and direction of modern num- bers. This and the sustained high quality performance by brasses, wood- winds, and percussion earned for conductor and men praise and instant applause at both the Christmas Concert and the Spring Concert. Band and Choral Club ioined their talents in both of these long-prepared-for events. The Marching Band is an indispensable part of the Fall and Spring Military Reviews. Choral Club Under the direction of Mr. Fred Eckels, the CBC Choral Club has sung its way through another year. In addition to the annual Christmas and Spring Concerts with the Concert Band, the chorus sang for the Mothers' Mass at St. Luke's as well as at several of their other functions. Although considerably smaller in quan- tity than previous groups, the Choral Club offset this seeming inequality by sterling performances whenever called on for service. rit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tradition Spirit is tr 112 ire? r . in 1 si S S X 3 at so .S if Nt ,' Xi Hd Q ,z 5 ,il 1 5 sg. jf ig fp rf T3 rr ' l'Sffz3r A 1 1 ' I F' S 3 Z 5 - p i 'TY' S V ,y A S S tr S s .rr--so-f-r if Y ' ssriipl . Guidon Reps Mike Condit, 211, uses his pay-or-else classmate, Ron Cognac. tactics o Most of the graduating classes of CBC wish to remem- ber their Alma Mater through their yearbooks. The Guidon seems to be the bond of a good class, the medium that brings the alumni back to the campus, and the key to memories of the good days at CBC.. However, a yearbook cannot be published without a good staff and a worthy moderator. Yet this is only the beginning5 the staff must have ideas, new ideas to make their Guidon an outstanding book. The ideas incorporated into this year's book are new and different in every respect. More space is given to sports, important organizations are featured, cartoons 114 and candid shots are included throughout the book. The SeniorClass hasalayout unique to Guidons of the past and the Senior Poll is different from all others. The cadets you see on this and the facing page are responsible for the book before you. Each person, from the editors to the homeroom representatives, did his part in making the '58 Guidon tops. It is the sincere hope of the Guidon Staff that each and every reader will find in the pages of this book the presentation of CBC life as he himself would like to re- member it. Such is the locus classicus of this, the Mothers' Club of CBC. Many organizations are founded on high ideals but few live up to them. Since its inception 35 years ago the amount of work these women have accomplished can never be wholly realized. Concerning the spiritual and educational well-being of the students, the club has worked tirelessly in that direction.
