The turning point in our lives came when we entered high school. You, Brother, have been the guide to many of us. For fifteen years, you have specialized in freshman instruction and have proven yourself a most capable advisor to the new Cadets who have just passed the turning point in their lives. After entering the Christian Brothers in 1930, and applying yourself to the studies necessary for your future life, you began your teaching career in the Iunior Novitiate at Glencoe, Missouri. In September. 1939, you were assigned to C.B.C. and have been with us ever since. Your homeroom, 302, is familiar to all of us. Many of us have benefitted by your untiring efforts in the class- room. At one time or another, your specialization, Math, stumped many of us. The athletically minded of us are also thankful for the help given us. It seems you were always on hand when we needed help. You have been endowed by nature with certain qualities which are needed by a good Brother and especially by one whose main duty is training boys. We have been the recipients of your gifts of kindliness and friendliness, un- derstanding and leadership. For these we thank you. We are Seniors now. Our high school days are over. Looking back on our four years here at C.B.C., we see the wonderful work you have done. We all appreciate the help you have given us, the many hours you have spent working for our welfare. In sincere appreciation for everything, we dedi- cate the l954 GUIDGN to you Brother Ioel, advisor and friend. The duty of the Council is to act as a media through which the student body can express its ideas and better cooperate with the Brothers. ln keeping with its policy adopted at its inception, the Student Council has continued to provide scholarship exams for incoming students and to sponsor various activities such as dances, newsletters, activity polls, and the street patrol, all of which tend to ful- fill the purpose of its operation. Iudging from the record thus far, the Council is headed for success in many more things which can help increase the fine reputation which C.B.C. has had for so many years. Many of the accomplishments of the Student Council are due, not only to the members and officers of the group, but primarily to its moderator, Brother Lewis Vincent, who is responsible for many of the activities of the organization. It is composed of the friends and relatives of the boys studying for the brotherhood and of the personal friends of the Christian Brothers. Each year the club holds its card party for the purpose of raising funds to be sent to Glencoe to aid the students in the Novitate and Iuniorate. As usual, this annual affair which was held on February 5, was a great success. Many of this year's accomplishments of the club were due to the efforts of its officers and of its moderator, Brother Brendan. 20 Alumni Officers. Brother Linus assumed the reins of the organization not long after its founder and helped consolidate the organization. Brother Luke, present moder- ator and also a graduate of the school, has continued the fine work of his predecessors. The object of the Alumni Association is to keep the graduates of the school interested in the work of their Alma Mater: it fosters a spirit of loyalty and support to the present student body. One of the main attractions of the organiza- tion is the annual banquet. lt is on this occasion that the graduates of the school are brought together and renew old friendships. Thanks are in order to the Alumni Association for the aid and interest which they showed in helping in the drive to purchase the new Retreat House. Officers: I. Baumeyer, Treasurer: U. Whenever anything is needed in the way of athletic or school equipment, the Fathers' Club responds beyond compare. For this and many other reasons the biggest event of the year is the Fathers' and Sons' Banquet. 'lhis year, as in the past, the Banquet was held in the Gold Room of the Iefferson Hotel. Here the main purpose of the Fathers' Club is mani- fested, that is to foster real understanding and affection between father and son. This year the Seniors are especially grateful to the Fathers' Club. Through their financial, as well as physical help, Vaugirard was opened to us for the first retreat. There is no doubt of the time and effort this opportunity required. This book could be filled with praises of grati- tude. Under the able direction of its officers, the Mothers' Club has contributed funds to the furnishing and renovating of our C.B.C. library. The calendar of events for the Mothers' Club reflects the great work and planning for which it is so well noted. In September the year's festivities opened with the Freshmen Mothers' Tea. October saw the Fall Card Party. In November the Mothers held their Communion Breakfast. The month of December ended with the traditional Christmas Party. A Fashion Show was presented by the Club in February. In March the Mothers' Club attended its annual Day of Recollection. Along with the budding flowers, April was the month of the Spring Card Party. Of course in May we were very proud to escort our Moms to the Senior Mothers' and Sons' Banquet. In a few words we have tried to show the accomplishments of our Mothers' Club. This entire book could be filled with words express- ing our gratitude to our wonderful Moms. From the Seniors to you, a sincere THANKS. Mrs. M. Luedde President Mrs. L. By late autumn a well-balanced and promis- ing team had been selected. Under the excellent and capable coaching of Mr. Iohn Murphy and Iody Connell the Cadets became masters of the game by defeating their first two opponents 40-0 and 13-O. Due to the injury to Iohn McCartney and other key players, the squad was not able to function as was expected. Captained by Tony Gioia and Dick Roeder, the squad still retained their fighting spirit, and ended the season with a 4 and 5 record. 26 The four horsemen and a colt. For this contest, Mr. Smith had secured the rights to an original play by Ioan Hoogstraet ot the St. Louis University Theater entitled No Way Home . This play was Written as a con- test piece, and the club had high hopes for success in the competition with twenty-five other local high school groups. Unfortunately, their hopes did not materialize. The play was rated an excellent piece of work, but did not win either first or second place in the competition. Three of the cast members did receive acting awards, however. Charles Mowery and William Henning were granted Honorable Mention Best Actor awards, while Mary Beth Smith of St. Ioseph's Academy received the Best Actress title. Block, C. Mowery, T. Lowther. This year's speech and debate squads were greatly handicapped by the loss of most of last year's experienced speakers. Only two members of the club, Bill Henning and Tom Lowther, had ever been finalists. There were several promising speakers who could be counted on for contest points, but most divisions had to be filled by new recruits from the sophomore and junior departments. The whole energy of the club was directed toward build- ing for next year and the year after. Results, as expected, were not too good. In the first C.I.S.L. league meet of the year, C.B.C. placed three contestants in the finals. In the second meet, that number dropped to one. A complete team was not entered in either of these contests, so group results also were poor. Under Mr. Murray Smith, the debate squad had the same difficulty. Only a handful of experienced debaters returned from last sea- son. Results were better than expected in the first practice meet of the year, but when the league opened, the Cadets could not duplicate this feat. Again the impetus was toward building up a powerful squad for the coming year. The bright spot in our drab season was when Tom Summers placed second in the Voice of Democracy contest. This contest was open to all high school students in St. Louis County. 826' W-.41 On the air in the radio workshop Members. lst Row: B. McKernan, I. Giambalvo, R. Leysaht, I. O'Neil, W. Zinzer, D. This is what the people of many years past have said. Today it is a reality. The Potamian Science Club of C.B.C. prepares its members for the future. The club, under the very able direction of its moderators, Brothers Charles and Brendan, Biology: Brother Henry Alfred, Physics: and Brother I. Henry, Chem- istry, has more than supplemented the scien- tific knowledge of its members. v 0 r S ..-mea. li li' 11 us...-L... The organization was named in honor of Brother Potamian, F.S.C., prominent scientist of the 19th century, who was also credited in assisting Marconi in the development of the radio. Science has long been a popular extracurric- ular for the Cadets for they know that tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Officers: I. Ryan, Librarian: R. Hesskamp, Secretary: G. Orth, President: T. Mooney, Vice-President: R. Kurz, Treasurer. 45 .,, cm The C.B.C. Pep Club underwent reno- vation this year under the able tutelage of Brother Brendan. The sale of booster pins, C.B.C. headscarves for the fairer followers of the team, pencils with the football and basketball schedules printed on them, programs Cknow your playersl and fireworks after the Mc- Bride game all aided in bringing spirit to the school and the teams. New officers will replace the leaders of this year with high hopes of a bigger and even better club for next year. Oificers: D. Godfrey, Vice-President: W. Dillon, President: D Kenny, Secretary: I. N I845 1900 Late in the year of 1848 gold was discovered in California The news spread l1ke wildfire and soon there was a mad rush of fortune seekers to the Pacific Coast For several years there existed a wild almost barbaric civilization in the gold rush towns Then the ore supply began to run out But the people who came to make a fortune decided to stay to make a living In a short time the West coast became a very important part of the United States become so 1mportant to our nation s economy needed commun1cat1on and trade with the East To f1ll this need a company was formed to construct a transcont1nental railroad On May 10 1869 this railroad was completed with the driving of a golden spike at Promontory Point Utah With the beginning of extenslve trade with the East western development began anew at a much increased tempo As in the growth of the rest of our country God played an 1mportant part in the growth of the far west One look at the C1l1eS of the West will show that this 1S true San Franc1sco Los Angeles Santa Barbara San Bernardino-all were or1g1nally mlsslons started by the early Spanish explorers Father Iunipero Serra first brought the faith to this area when he built a chain of missions in what is now California during the 18th century It was during this period of 1845 to 1900 that America was officially taken off the list of mission- ary countries by the Vatican authorities No longer were the United States considered infants in the Church. The religious development which began with the Spanish priest-explorers had reached the point where our nation was considered a full- fledged member of Christ s flock One of the most important events in the religious history of our country happened during this same period. At the Sixth Provincial council of Baltimore in 1846 the Blessed Virgin Mary was proclaimed the patroness and protectress of the United States Now her shadow spread from the Atlantic to the Pacific, guarding our country from harm. sid, of me pm, pw M, The cities and towns in California which had S unior acu fy BROTHER H AMBROSE BROTHER HENRY ALFRED Room 102 BROTHER L MAURICE Room 104 Room 203 Relrgnon III Plane Geometry Englrsh II Rehgron III Physxcs Extra cumculur Relrqron III Englxsh II Plane Geometry Enghsh III Extra curncular Basketball Lockers Sctence Club Extra curncular Iumor Dept Moderator Moderator Mrlxtary Px Fathers Club BROTHER I GEORGE BROTHER I HEGIS Room 308 BROTHER TIMOTHY Room 404 Room 405 RSIIQIOH III English II Engllsh III Reltglon III Soczology Amerlcan Hls Relxgxon III Latm I and II Extra currlc Extra currxcular Speech Gurdon Pub tory Extra currxcular Baseball and ular BBVC Speech Mrhtary P lxclty Track Moderator tAsstl 56 oom l02 CLASS OFFICERS ' WILLIAM CRAFT ,, 2' ff 5? The squad was organized in 1937 in honor of Brother Elzear Stephen F.S.C. The Grenadiers are composed of Sophomores, Iuniors, and Seniors who are capable of meet- ing its high requirements. Under the direction of SFC. Iohn Beck, the Grenadiers have risen to even new heights in popularity. They appear now with light blue scarves and in Company strength. Also this year the crack squad has learned many new drill exercises. Many public appearances highlighted the year for the group. Grenadier Oliicersz lst Row: Col. T. Lowther, Commander. 2nd Row: Lt. The end of the year found the C.B.C. Rifle Team in second place in the greater St. Louis Ir. Rifle League. The team lost one match throughout the year and that was a heart- breaker to St. Louis U. High. The team shot a record high of 736 1000 against Western Military Academy. The sharpshooters made a splendid showing in every match they entered. Any honor the team may have gained was due ot the expert coaching of M Sgt. Schroeder. This was Sgt. Schroeder's first year as coach of the Rifle Team. Executive Committee. lst Row: R. Although the school as a whole smashed records, the Seniors ended the drive in third place in department standings. A newcomer was seen in the winner's circle, the Freshman Department. A special note of praise is in order for Brother Anselm's 303 who had the highest number of returns in the Fresh- man Department with no perpetual returns. Led by Stanley Domijan, with over 800 re- turns, Brother Iames' 402B had the highest re- turns in the school. Stanley Domijan received a silver plaque for the highest returns of the year. Ken Karsten, Senior, received a gold plaque with the most returns for four years. The trip club will leave sometime in May for a trip to Chicago as a reward for the fine work done during the drive. March brought thoughts of baseball and track to all of us. Much to our satisfaction the final sports events of the year found our seniors stars of the field. Cadets and their dads journeyed to Hotel Iefferson for one of the major social affairs of the year when the Fathers and Sons Banquet was held in the Gold Room on Wednesday Ianuary 27th. It was a grand party and evening but it brought to our minds one more reminder that the final year at C.B.C. for all our class was gradually slipping away. Other events soon stressed this prelude to graduation day even more The first was La Promenade Militaire our Military Ball which was featured for the month of April Brother Lewis Vincent worked miracles in transforming the gymnasium into a lavish ballroom and the glitter of sabres the rustle of silk the play of lights all underscored with dancing music made everyone forget that on other days the place was a gymnasium Miss Ann Murphy after being escorted through the arch f Sabres by Cadet Colonel Thomas E Lowther was crowned Queen and Honorary Colonel of the Regiment Candidates for that honor nominated by other Catholic girls high schools were named Honorary Officers holding various ranks and were permitted some weeks later to lead their battalions companies etc when the final Retreat was held on the campus Next came two military programs. The day of the Federal Inspection a subject of contro- versy and preparation for weeks in advance arrived. We felt that we and all other Cadets had been thoroughly coached and prepared for the test and our hopes ran high that we would retain the coveted honor rating for the school. This we could hope with all our hearts even though the results would not be known until mid-summer. The second military program of the Spring was the Military Review which featured a mock battle for the enjoyment of our relations and friends. Finally the Mothers of the Seniors went with their sons to the annual Banquet given in their honor on May 20 and we knew that one more week full of those exams though it would be would bring us to the day for which we had waited so long Graduation Day On May 30 as we received our diplomas and having kissed the flag saluted the Professor of Military Science and Tactics Lt Col William G Blake we knew the time had come to leave the classrooms of C BC But we shall never forget the four wonderful years spent within the walls of Christian Brothers College High School nor shall we forget the Brothers who have worked so hard to teach and quide us during the time we spent with them We want to thank these Brothers our parents and God Himself for all the help we have had on our Way to manhood We pray we shall never forget what they have done for us nor the place in our hearts called C B C Senior Members of Student Council lst Row I McC1rtney M Keating I Mimltz R DAgost1no R Lauck 2nd Row W Dillon D Albers R Roeder I Tompras T Lowther Ql'll0I HCM, I if BROTHER IOHN MARK Room 205 Relrgxon IV Enl Ec g rsh World Hrstory onomlcs Extra curncular Band Choral Club K D C C S M C Retreat House BROTHER LEWIS VINCENT Room 210 Relrglon IV Mechamcal Drawrng Tngo nometry Agebra II Extra currlcular Senior Dept Moderator Student Council Moderator Guxdance Testmg La Prom enade MIIIIGIIS Member of Amenca Personnel cmd Guldanc ber of N em ocatxonal Guidance socxatxon BROTHE R I GIRAR D Room 211 Relxgzon IV Engllsh IV BROTHER I ALFRED Room 212 Relxgron IV Typmg I and II Selllng Bookkeepmg Extracurricular Procura tor Moderator Natronal Honor SOCIGIY Public Belahons Drrector oi Catholnc Busmess Educatron Assocratlon Execu trve Board Member oi M of CB EA I 'K - -lu 1 l I I . n ' e Program, M - ational V ' ' As ' ' . Wdfarfe La Prominade Militaire of 1954 is now history but its memory will long endure. Through the artistic endeavor of Brother Lewis Vincent, a drab gymnasium was converted into a regal ballroom. The color scheme consisted of vari- ous shades of American Beauty Rose and white. These same colors appeared on the bids along with the piece of jewelry in a ballerina design. The ceiling of the ballroom was covered in white with a gigantic star in the center. The walls were adorned with panels which literally glowed when illuminated by black light. The evening reached its climax with the playing of the Triumph March from Aida and the crowning of our Queen, Miss Ann Murphy, from the Academy of the Sacred Heart, St. Charles, Missouri. The Cadet Officers formed the traditional honor guard with the arch of sabres. Miss Murphy was crowned Queen by Brigadier General William H. Harrison. The melodic arrangement was presented by Mr. Iules Blattner and his orchestra. Arthur Murray taught him too. Officers Club?
