Therefore it is necessary for this body to have the cream of the crop of the C.B.C. Cadet Corps. And that s just what they are! This elite group excels in scholastics mili- tary neatness. The Grenadiers fo memory of Brother Iustinus Elz ' ear a past Director of C.B.C. and of Brother Elzear Stephen are comprised of unded in 1937 in sophomores Juniors and seniors Each rnominq before class under the watchful eye of The Sarqe the Elzear Gre d na 1ers drill perfectlng their intricate old A rrny Drills and their Silent Dnlls. The Ross Lancers, organized in 1940, were narned after the first Professor of Military Science and Tactics at C.B.C., Colonel Glenn A. Ross. The purpose of this unit has been to encourage, preserve, and develop the highest ideals of the military profession. Lancers can be identified by the shield-shaped pin worn on the right side of the blouse. Practicing every Tuesday and Thursday mom- ings before school, they have helped maintain the high honor rating of C.B,C. by representing the school in several public functions. Cadets eligible for this unit must be under five feet, seven inches in height, and must maintain a high personal bearing in military as well as in scholastic studies. This year the Lancers have attained excellent perfection in drill and neatness under the corn- mand of lst, 'f Sgt. Leo Mann as Captain of the Lancers. He is aided in this task by 2nd Lieut. Seniof-A lead gridmen Good Evening: C.B.C. welcomes you to its fourth Prep League game of the season. We ask you to re- member not to cross the playing field either at halftime or when the game is finished. Thank you! Here are tonight's line-ups. For C.B.C. at left end Bagot, No. 225 at left tackle Captain Busch, No. 50: at left. guard Northcott, No. 415 at center Molina, No. 465 at right guard Walsh, No. l55 at right tackle Weibert, No. 515 at right end Kargus, No. 395 at quarterback Lafser, No. 295 at left halfback Gatti, No. 385 at right halfback Taylor, No. 355 and at fullback Hennessey, No. 47 .... Although it is true that the '48-'49 football team did not have an impressive list of victories, it was perhaps the most spirited team produced at C.B.C. in recent years. This fact was not produced by a pep talk before the game or a Knute Rockne tear-jerker but by hard work from the first practice to the one before each game. Whether the Klernrnen won or lost, the score was never lopsided. A sturdy line and a de- ceptive backfield showed the results of hard work and good coaching. The Sub-Regionals saw an underdog C.B.C. quintet defeat second-seeded Cleveland, Public League champs, before dropping the final game to McBride. Advancing to the Regionals, the Cadets had the ill-fortune to meet in the first round, Iohn Burroughs, powerhouse of the ABC league, which went on to the semi-finals in the State. Bob Kipper, lack Moore, and Rich Reilly, the season's top Cadet scorers, were honored for their outstanding play by being selected for the All-Prep Tearn, a crack squad picked by the coaches of the District. Paced by a nucleus of returning veterans, C.B.C.'s thinclads had their usual victory-studded season on the oval and in the field. En- couraged by their success of the previous year, when they won all meets but three, the Klemmen engaged Clayton's Greyhounds at C.B.C. on March 29 and finished a grueling season at the State Meet in Columbia on May 14. McBride, Webster Groves,, Normandy, and Southwest in addition to Clayton furnished opposition in the usual dual meets. The Clayton Invitational, Prep League finals, and the District meets provided them with additional tests against multiple opponents. Much credit tor the success of the trackmen is due to the genius of Coach Bill Klemm who brought the squad along with his usual fine performances. C.B.C. This year's Guidon is a wor- thy testimony of the hard work and persistent efforts of Andy Rush and Bill Motzel and a host of other industrious seniors who, under the guidance of Brother Hubert Gerard, put long hours filled with anxious moments into producing what is undoubt- edly one of the finest annuals presented to any graduating class. The l949 Guidon went into production in May, 1948, when the present seniors under the leadership of Rush and Motzel began submitting pages of orig- inal and not-so-original layouts. During the summer months Rush mulled over the many splendid ideas presented and in the quiet of Grand Lake, Colo- rado, high in the Rockies, tossed together the novel treatment for this 1949 annual. In September, Hush and Mot- zel joined the results of their labors, presented their com- pleted layout, designed a cover, assigned articles, and waited. The splendid cooperation of their fellow seniors resulted in this different 1949 Gurdon. Because we wished this 1949 Guidon to contain all the cadets, we picture to the right those boys who had the misfortune to be absent when their names were called for picture-taking on Guidon Day. The C.B.C. Variety Club, a new talent organization at school this year, had its debut at the annual Christ- mas Party thrown for the cadets the last day before the holidays. Almost every member of the cast got the chance to show what he could do and the Cadet Corps received him heartily. Phil Hola stole the show by his tantalizing solos. Vying with him for first honors were members of the cast of Dirty Simon, and the Barbershop Notecrackers. Andy Rush and his trun- cated band furnished the theme for the show with their playing of ln the Mood. After this auspicious be- ginning the Variety Club had no trouble in finding spots to present its offerings. Appear- ances were made in the lo- cality at St. Mary's Hospital, three shows for doctors, nurses, and help of the insti- tution: St. Mary's, Bridgeton for the pupils: St. Ioseph's Bottom Row: Walter Bisch, Thomas Massaro, Robert Maret, Ioseph Dockery, William Naber. U I lelere may Ke an Ymmvrtal Paw tear Under the direction of its new moderator, Brother Edward, the Potarnicm Science Club is still prospering. This year it boasts a capacity membership and many had to be turned away. Every Friday evening the chemistry lab hums with the murmurs of the amateur chemists. Sometimes the hum increases to a shout as an eager student pours compound on acid instead of acid on Compound. This year the Science Club is dealing mainly with biological subjects, a very beneficial extra- curricular, for C.B.C. does not embrace this course. The study of qualitative analysis is their principal work, while frequent movies provide knowledge and entertainment. The Science Club received its name in honor ot Brother Potamian, F.S.C., very prominent scien- tist of the 19th century. lt is the hope of the moder- ator that, with his guidance and the initiative of the individual student, some of the club members may someday become famous chemists, biolo- gists, or physicists. VY. Brother Edward, Potamian Science Club moderator, points out some interesting data to two of his senior club mem- bers. From the left: Brother Edward, Don Steinman, Eqon Doering. Pd!-0 Boom lllotlcel-A lllodernqe Chapel This year as usual the Mothers' Club has played a large part in the Cadet Life at C.B.C. by centering all its activities on the redecorating of the chapel. Perhaps, because of this the an- nual card parties were the most successful in the history of the club. The book review by Brother Iames Alpheus drew some 450 people. The proceeds from the foregoing activities were used to modernize the school chapel. lt was repainted, new kneeling pads installed, and new light fixtures put up. In addition to this grand gift to the school, the Mothers' Club plans many more which will make the C.B.C. Cadets proud of their school and of their mothers who have worked so hard to make C.B.C. the wonderful place that it is. Special gratitude is due to Brother Austin, moderator, and to the officers No of the club for the fine work they are doing to keep this organization the top activity at C.B.C. The year's undertakings by the Dads' Club include uniforms for both the basketball and the track teams, renovation of the tennis courts, and financial assistance to The Turret and various other clubs about school. Under the guidance of the club's president, Mr. Ioseph H.
