Jusf whaf fhe ulfimafe nafure and scope of fhaf work was fo be resfed in fhe hands of God. The Brofhers were cordially welcomed by Arch- bishop Kenriclm, who assigned for fheir use a sub- sfanfial building wesf of fhe Old Cafhedral. This house had been af one fime fhe residence of fhe sainfly Bishop of Sf. Louis, fhe Mosf Reverend Bishop Rosafi. If was fo serve as school and resi- dence for fhe Brofhers unfil such fime as definife plans for fhe fufure could be made. During fhe firsf years fhere were many privafions fo be borne, buf fhe worlr prospered. There were already more sfudenfs applying fhan could be ac- commodafed in fhfnarrow quarfers and fhe number of Brofhers was inadequafe. In fhis growing wesfern cify fhe Chrisfian Brofhers found a wide opporfunify for doing much good and doing fhaf good under mosf congenial condifions. Far-seeing Superiors recognized fhe possibilifies and answered fheir de- mands by maferially increasing fhe personnel of the communify. Adequafely equipped as fo sfaff, fhey soon found, as applicafions for fhe coming year began fo come in, fhaf fhey would have fo furn many away. Af fhe suggesfion of fhe Archbishop fhey purchased a building af Eighfh and Cerre Sfreefs. This building was fo be used for classes. A new problem soon faced fhe Brofhers. Thus, C.B.C. was fhe firsf esfablishmenf of fhe Brofhers in all fhe Americas fo funcfion on fhe collegiafe level. Among fhe names of fhe five charfer members of fhis corporafion fhere is one fhaf will ever be held in benedicfion in Sf. Louis-Brofher Paulian. Then came 'fhe Civil War. The College fided over fhis crisis, b'uf only af fhe cosf of greaf sacri- fices. During fhe enfire period of fhe war, school sessions were confinued wifhouf inferrupfion, de- spife frying inconveniences. Federal froops were quarfered in 'rhe College and as Confederafe pris- oners were confined in adioining buildings, fhe prison guards found if necessary 'lo occupy several of fhe classrooms days and nighf. This made feach- ing rafher difficulf and af fimes very excifing. For fhe sevenfeen years immediafely affer fhe war, fhe College lrepf pace wifh fhe gianf growfh of fhe cify only fo come face fo face wifh anofher problem. The encroachmenfs of business were mal:- ing fhe locafion of fhe College unsuifable for edu- cafional purposes. The old parishes were doomed fo be overrun by facfories and warehouses and fhe people were already moving ouf in ever-increasing numbers. To meef fhis new condifion fhe faculfy purchased a fhirly-acre fracf of land af Easfon Avenue and Kingshighway Boulevard. If was known as Cofe Brillianfe and fhe name ever clung fo fhe second College.
