The Varsity Pre-Season began on September l, 1971. At first the squad looked bad and after the first two games looked even worse. In the first two games the Colts were destroyed by Steinert, the num- ber one team in the state, and rival team, Saint Mary's of South Amboy. But after these two disap- pointments the offense began to score and take the load off the defense which was playing far superior than anyone had expected. Front liners were Brian Kean, Steve Orban, John Peel, Bob Orban, and scor- ing leader Mark Sucheki. When this line clicked it ranked as good as any, and when it didn't the' terri- fying defense held the fort. Led by co-captains Phil McCutcheon and Phil Kuhlthau the defense became a weapon in the Colt arsenal. Supporting the cap- tains were Dave Galligan and Randy Kalinowski as fullbacks, at halfbacks were Kevin Corcoran and Mark Parry, but the team didn't end there. Without the rest of the team the 7-4 record would not have been possible. Phil Portantino, Kevin McCaffery, Mike Gorman, and Jim Catley were the main defense replacements backed by Keith Peppas, Dave Flynn, Ken Moore, Mike Boem and Mike Loncola, and on offense Mike Sheehan, Tom Raffa, Marty Lonnigan, John Ayers, Mike Squillante, Dan Jones, all contrib- uted to the Colt cause. The dream of Varsity Soccer started the previous year with the painting of Henderson Hall. The soccer team would like to thank Coaches Brother James Far- rell and Mr. Thomas Lackey.
