l DEDICATIO : ,M-ilu...-...,,, BROTHER ANTHONY FRANCIS WOLF, F.S.C. 1884 - l972 Strong son of God, immortal Love, Whom we, that have not seen Thy face By faith, and faith alone, embrace, Believing where we cannot prove, Thine are these orbs of light and shade, Thou madest Life in man and brute, Thou madest Death, and lo, Thy foot Is on the skull which Thou hast made. Thou wilt not leave us in the dust: Thou madest man, he knows not why, He thinks he was not made to die, And Thou hast made him: Thou art just. Thou seemest human and divine, The highest, holiest manhood, Thou. Our wills are ours, we know not howl Our wills are ours, to make them Thine. Our little systems have their day, They have their day and cease to be, They are but broken lights of Thee, And Thou, O Lord, art more than they. We have but faith: we cannot know, For knowledge is of things we see, And yet we trust it comes from Thee, A beam in darkness: let it grow. Let knowledge grow for more to more, But more of reverence in us dwell, That mind and soul, according well, May make one music as before, But vaster. We are fools and slightg We mock Thee when we do not fear: But help Thy foolish ones to bear, Help Thy vain words to bear Thy light. Forgive what seemed my sin in me, What seemed my worth since l began, For merit lives from man to man, And not from man, O Lord, to Thee. Forgive my grief for one removed, Thy creature, whom I found so fair. I trust he lives in Thee, and there I find him worthier to be loved. Forgive these wild and wandering cries, Confusions of a wasted youth, Forgive them where they fail in truth, And in Thy wisdom make me wise. O yet we trust that somehow good Will be the final goal of ill, To pangs of nature, sins of will, Defects of doubt, and taints of blood: That nothing walks with aimless feet' That not one life will be destrovf-f' Or cast as rubbish to the void, When God hath made the pile cor' That not a worm is cloven in ' That not a me is shriv. V -ln,-..- .. V Ts I 'EMORIAM Behold, we know not anything, I can but trust that good shall fall At last-far off-at last, to all, And every winter change to spring. So runs my dream, but what am I? An infant crying in the night, An infant crying for the light, And with no language but a cry. That wish, that of the living whole No life may fail beyond the grave, Derives it not from what we have The lil-:est God within the soul? Are God and Nature then at strife, That Nature lends such evil dreams? So careful of the type she seems, So careless of the single life, That I, considering everywhere Her secret meaning in her deeds, And finding that of fifty seeds She often brings but one to bear, I falter where I firmly trod, And falling with my weight of cares Upon the great world's altar stairs That slope through darkness up to God, I stretch lame hands of faith, and grope, And gather dust and chaff, and call To what I feel is Lord of all, And faintly trust the larger hope. So careful of the type? but no. From scarped cliff and quarried stone She cries, A thousand types are gone, I care for nothing, all shall go. Thou makest thine appeal to me, I bring to life, I bring to death, The spirit does but mean the breath I know no more. And he, shall he, Man, her last work, who seemed so fair, Such splendid purpose in his eyes, Who rolled the psalm to wintry skies, Who Built him fanes of fruitless prayer, Who trusted God was love indeed And love Creations final law- Though Nature, red in tooth and claw 'With ravine, shrieked against his creed- 'Nho loved, who suffered countless ills, Who battled for the True, the Just, Be blown about the desert dust, sealed within the iron hills? are? A monster then, a dream, discord. Dragons of the prime, -nat tear each other- in their slime, ,N music matched with 'himf -ml bless! dress? --Alfred L3 1 CMV BROTHER BENEDICT MURPHY, F.S.C 1905-1972 Ofl
