During these years it has sent into the dif- ferent walks of life young men who have made outstanding records in their chosen professions, and who have reflected credit upon the institution and its teachers. The Christian Brothers' advent to Albany was in 1854, at the earnest entreaty of Rt. Rev. Bishop McCloskey. Shortly after their arrival they opened a school on Western Avenue, the first prin- cipal and director of which was Brother Jeremy. A few years later Brother Urban was appointed director of the rapidly growing Academy. The facilities of the Western Avenue establishment proved to be inadequate, accordingly, in 1862, a beautiful and extensive piece of property along Madison Avenue was pur- chased by the Brothers. This property extended from Madison Avenue to Hamilton Street. During the summer of 1865 Brother Urban was succeeded by Brother Paulian. It was under his administration that the Broth- ers Band gained prominence in the area. ln 1868 Brother Hugh assumed charge and shortly after transferred C B A to a spacious building on Beaver Street The number of classes increased from four to eight The year 1869 witnessed the incorporation of Christian Brothers Academy by the New York State Board of Regents Brother Leontine became the next director of the Academy During his term of administration the Academy was again moved this time to a five story structure on State Street ln 1882 Brother Leontine was replaced by Brother John Evangelist during whose scholarly administration the Academy again sought more quiet and adaptable environments At this time the old Normal College on Lodge and Howard Streets was placed on sale by the State and purchased by the Brothers Shortly after occupying the newly renovated building Brother Alexander succeeded Brother John as director In 1887 the Alumni Association was organized Mr Frank lin Danaher was its first president During the last decade of the century Brother Constantius was director of the Academy and it was during his term of office that the military training became part of the curriculum of the Academy Daniel E Lynch was ap pointed the first mayor of the cadet corps Malor McGowan USA was the first military instructor Shortly after the turn of the century Brother Arator Justin was appointed director succeeding Brother Constantius It was during this period that the Academy experienced one of greatest eras of growth The Battalion was increased in size from three companies to five Brother A Edward became the next director in 1919 and he has the distinction of having paid the final part of the mortgage Brother Clement became the next director in 1925 and it was during his admininstration that the uniforms were changed from the the Civil War Zouave to the dress blues that are presently 3B xa The Lodge Street School we I I I - ' i l f I - ' ' I . 4 ' - .
