During these years it has sent into the dif- ferent walks of life young men who have made outstanding records in their chosen professions, and who have reflected credit upon the institution and its teachers. The Christian Brothers' advent to Albany was in 1854, at the earnest entreaty of Rt. Rev. Bishop McCloskey. Shortly after their arrival they opened a school on Western Avenue, the first prin- cipal and director of which was Brother Jeremy. A few years later Brother Urban was appointed director of the rapidly growing Academy. The facilities of the Western Avenue establishment proved to be inadequate, accordingly, in 1862, a beautiful and extensive piece of property along Madison Avenue was pur- chased by the Brothers. This property extended from Madison Avenue to Hamilton Street. During the summer of 1865 Brother Urban was succeeded by Brother Paulian. It was under his administration that the Broth- ers Band gained prominence in the area. ln 1868 Brother Hugh assumed charge and shortly after transferred C B A to a spacious building on Beaver Street The number of classes increased from four to eight The year 1869 witnessed the incorporation of Christian Brothers Academy by the New York State Board of Regents Brother Leontine became the next director of the Academy During his term of administration the Academy was again moved this time to a five story structure on State Street ln 1882 Brother Leontine was replaced by Brother John Evangelist during whose scholarly administration the Academy again sought more quiet and adaptable environments At this time the old Normal College on Lodge and Howard Streets was placed on sale by the State and purchased by the Brothers Shortly after occupying the newly renovated building Brother Alexander succeeded Brother John as director In 1887 the Alumni Association was organized Mr Frank lin Danaher was its first president During the last decade of the century Brother Constantius was director of the Academy and it was during his term of office that the military training became part of the curriculum of the Academy Daniel E Lynch was ap pointed the first mayor of the cadet corps Malor McGowan USA was the first military instructor Shortly after the turn of the century Brother Arator Justin was appointed director succeeding Brother Constantius It was during this period that the Academy experienced one of greatest eras of growth The Battalion was increased in size from three companies to five Brother A Edward became the next director in 1919 and he has the distinction of having paid the final part of the mortgage Brother Clement became the next director in 1925 and it was during his admininstration that the uniforms were changed from the the Civil War Zouave to the dress blues that are presently 3B xa The Lodge Street School we I I I - ' i l f I - ' ' I . 4 ' - . Brother C. Brendan succeeded Brother Clement in 1935. A second battalion was added making the cadet corps a regiment. The military band was organized and a cavalry troop was intro- duced into the regiment. The facilities at Lodge Street were rapidly becoming inadequate. Brother Brendan realizing the situa- tion began to make plans for the financing and construction of a new C.B.A. lt was during his administration that the Ladies Aux- ilary was organized with Mrs. James E. Rooney as its first presi- dent. In 1937 the Academy was accredited by the War Department as a military academy. Col. Bertrand T. Fay, USMCR, was appoint- ed to the position of P.M.S. 81 T. The year 1938 witnessed a great event in the history of the Academy-the laying of the corner stone of the new C.B.A. on University Heights on October 23, by Rt. Rev. Bishop Edmund Gibbons, Bishop of Albany. The new school was opened in 1939 and the first Mass was celebrated in the Cadet Chapel by Bishop Gibbons. - ' 1940 saw the organization of the Men's Association ilater called the Fathers' Associationl with Mr. John Salm as its first president. This group brought together once a month the fathers of boys in the school and many others who were interested in the development of the Academy. In 1941 Brother Aloysius, a mem- ber of the faculty, was made director succeeding Brother Brendan, the founder of the new C.B.A. During his term of office the plans for a new gymnasium were drawn up and in 1944 the new building was completed and blessed by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edward Maginn, V.G. On April 12 of that same year Brother Paulian celebrated his Golden Jubilee. While on way to the summer retreat in 1946 Brother Aloy- sius died suddenly and Brother B. Thomas was assigned to take over the directorship of the Academy. Although the Academy was located in the University Heights area the Brothers residence was still located at Lodge Street until 1948 when it was abandon- ed. The faculty lived at La Salle School on Western Avenue until January 14, 1950, at this time they moved into their faculty house adiacent to the school. It was shortly afterwards that Brother A. Francis celebrated his Golden Jubilee. During these years our athletic teams were bringing fame to the Academy and the Rifle Team won many high places in the annual Hearst National Rifle Contests. In 1955 Brother Cornelius Peter was sent to succeed Brother Thomas as director. Many improvements made about the grounds of the Academy. The erection of a grotto designed by Brother A. Gabriel to Our Lady of Lourdes was the most notable of these improvements. As one looks back over this span of a century of progress, one can not but admire the faith, determination, hard work and foresightedness of those that helped to make the present C.B.A. the outstanding educational institution that it is today. With God's help this work will continue so that those of the future may share in the great traditions as those of the past have shared and those of the present are now sharing. Beside being the graduating class of the Centenary Year of Christian Brothers Academy, we, the seniors, have been privileged to have been instructed by two members of the faculty who are celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary as Christian Brothers. These religious, Brother B, James and Brother A. Patrick, received the Habit of a Christian Brother September 7, 1933 and then spent the next four years of training together. Upon com- pletion of their scholasticate, they were separated, each being assigned to different communities. Brother James received teach- ing assignments in St. Joseph's School, New York City, Holy Name School, New York City, LaSalle Academy, New York City, St. Patrick's, Newburgh and Christian Brothers Academy, Albany. During the same period, Brother Patrick was assigned to St. Gabriel's School, New York City, St. Raymond's School, New York City, Good Shepherd School, New York City, Lincoln Hall, Lincoln- dale, LaSalle Academy, Providence, R. l., Bishop Loughlin, Brook- lyn, La Salle Military Academy, Oakdale, L. l. and Christian Broth- ers Academy, Albany. A hardy band of brothers set forth upon the rugged slopes of the city in 1859 -- to lay the foundations of a unique Christian school for boys. This institution has prospered and grown strong. Dedicated men they Were, imbued with a strong Christian faith, and a conviction that the American boy is willing and ready to serve his God -- and his country too. lt is our happy privilege to extend our congratulations to the Christian Brothers of this generation, who carry on the glorious tradition established by those pioneers a century ago. We pray that God will bless their labors as Christian Brothers Academy marches on to another century of devoted service Faithfully yours, 1 ' ' ff + WILLIAM A. For a hundred years the Academy has labored in the Field of Catholic education, and it has long enjoyed in the United States of America a well-deserved reputation For its achievements, both scholastic and otherwise. Pride of place, however, has always been given to the training and Formation For a Full life oF staunch Catholic citizenship, thereby continuing a tradition that dates back to our glorious Father and Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle. May such aims and ideals ever flourish in our lnstitute, For it is by them that we carry out the apostolate the Church has given into our hands. l join you in thanking God For the countless graces He has showered down on the Academy during the past century, and in praying that, through His Blessed Mother, He may long continue to bless and protect you and your important work. The vicious block- ing, tackling and hard running of the Brothers left Draper on the short end of a 27-O score. Rod Bobbins caught a Ron Devey aerial for one, while Bill Byrne skirted right end from 31 yards out for another. John Pariseau plunged over from the three in the third quarter for the Brothers third T. D. of the night. Then linebacker Dave Yezzi blocked a punt into the end zone, where Rod Bobbins recovered for the final score. Good blocking was displayed by Dave Oberting and Tom Barton. The Brothers, on defense, were led by Barton, Oberting, Dick Lavigne, Jack Griner and Brian Buckoff. may i Sept. The hopeful Brothers were out to avenge another of last seasons six defeats. The game was fought on even terms for several minutes until Dick Stack broke it wide open wtih an BO yard touchdown run around left end lead by good blocking. From that point on it was all Brothers with the Purple and Gold run- ning through, passing over and stopping the Crusaders cold for a 26-O shut out win. In the third quarter, J. Griner recovered a LaSalle fumble at midfield. From there a Devey-to-Byrne pass and runs by J. Pariseau and R. Stack got the ball to the LaSalle TB. Devey then pitched to D. Oberting, who made a spec- tacular catch, for a TD. The great C. B. A. offense was overshadowed by a greater defense. The defensive unit held LaSalle to 36 yards. A Fred Tallman Tackle record 7,000 fans iammed into Hawkins Stadium to see the annual fall classic, with the outcome of the game deciding the champions of the Diocesan League. The Brothers struck fiercely at the start trying to end the Lions eight year domination of the annual homecoming game. The Broth- ers got their two scores in the first period, behind marches of 66 and 52 yards by fullback John Pariseau and halfback Bill Byrne. With Byrne carrying 45 yards in 3 plays and Dick Stack carrying for I0 the ball was brought to the VI 5, with fullback John 'Pariseau plunging over for the T. D. It took only six plays to get the second score. Byrne went off tackle from the seven to climax that haul. Rod Bobbins dropped kick the PAT to make it I3-0. A 20 yard TD pass kept the Lions hopes alive early in the second quarter. An untimely fumble on our own I0 yard line set up the Lions second score which tied up the game. Co-Captains Byrne and Oberting were this years winners of the Brother Aloysuis Memorial Trophy. Bill Byrne lugged the ball I2 times for 94 yards, 9 more than the entire VI team accumulated on the ground. Oberting was a stand out on defense and a fine block- er and receiver on offense which merited him his share of the trophy. ff , f 2 fi - thbb INDIANS SCALPED . . . 26-O For their 5th game of the season the Brothers took to the road traveling north to take on a highly regarded Glens Falls' eleven with a 5-O record. The Purple and Gold, facing its third undefeated team in a row, met the Northern Conference Champions on a rain-soaked field. The Brother's drew first blood with a Devey-to-Bobbins aerial at the end of the third quarter. The steady drizzle didn't effect the Brothers passing attack as Devey hit Stack in the end zone for his second of three T. D. aerials. Stack's brilliant 50 yard punt return to the 5 yard line set up the Brothers third score in the opening minutes of the second half. Two plays later Pariseau scored standing up. Bobbins drop kicked for the P. A. T. The lndians air attack failed when Stack picked off a Glens Falls aerial, to set up the Brothers final tally. On the next play Devey uncocked his arm again to fire a pass to Oberting in the end zone. Bobbins fakes, dropkicks and throws to Oberting for the P. A. T. The fine showmanship of Mr. Hayes coupled with the exuberant enthusiastm of the Cadets and the keen interest ot the parents proved that we were to have the greatest show in C.B.A.'s history. The theme ot the show was built around the lOOth Anniversary of the Academy. A typical family was picked forthe cover of Life magazine. Mr. Miller was the Father, Mrs, Weiss the Mother, and Bob Starzec the son. The Master of Ceremonies was Dan Horan, who in his dinner iacket lent a special dignity to the show. His dulcet voice gifted the audience with the assurance of a splended evening. And ot course the cast lived up to the expectations ot the audience. Papa won't you dance with me? XV ww..
